Why did our ranking go up, then drop down again?
-
Hello SEOMoz community.
I work for a website that runs a collectibles news service and sells collectibles online.
I recently renamed one of the pages from "Stock for Sale" to "Collectibles for Sale" anticipating this would help our ranking for the term "collectibles for sale". This changes the Title, URL and h1 to Collectible for Sale.
A few days later we were up to 5th on Google UK for that keyword.
But now after the weekend we've dropped off the face of the earth... Or at least somewhere low down in the rankings.
I imagine there could be multiple reasons for this, but what are the most likely causes?
There is not much text on the page, it contains an iFrame with image boxes that link to relevant collectibles categories.
Website: www.paulfrasercollectibles.com

We used to use a different style URL which just included the docid and catid. At this point we manually entered friendly URL redirects in the CMS.
At the beginning of this month we converted to an automatic friendly url system. The url is generated from the article title. Old urls now use the rel="canonical" to direct to the correct page which is always of the format:
www.paulfrasercollectibles.com/category/article-title/0000.page
I'm not entirely sure if we have the ability to make 301 redirects.

Hey everyone.
Can I just add something else. I changed the text on another page, adding more information about the service the company provides. The page is titled "Investment Newsletter" it was page 3 Google UK for that term and had been for a while.
It went up to page 2. And now its dropped away somewhere. This change was implemented over a week ago.
Why is this happening? Surely it shouldn't be a result of me changing the content on the page?
I've never seen anything on SEOMoz to suggest that improving a pages content will lose my rank in Google.
Any suggestions?
Can I also add, that we changed the Meta description on the home page from being the same as the title:
"Latest news from the world of high-end collectibles and investments"
to
"Free daily news for collectors plus antiques, memorabilia and investment-grade collectibles for sale."
This has seen us drop from 5th place on the 1st page in the UK. to the 3rd page on Google.
But the Meta description only has limited SEO effect and surely this is a change for the better?

Adrian,
We always see an initial high ranking that last about a week then goes back down sometimes a few pages..Over a 2 month period we see the ranking usually restore.

Hi Adrian
In regards to the other tags, I take it back, it was Chrome's view source code coloring, made tags look broken at quick glance. Sorry!
As far as the canonical, I was just curious why there are two URLs for that page to begin with? Is it that you need the '1850' in the URL to provide the GET call to the database?
It appears as if all your category level pages operate this way? You should be able to get a singular, clean URL and make your category call without the need for duplicate pages at all.
If this is not the case, you may want to 301 Redirect the '1850' page to the other page. There doesn't seem to be a need for both pages to be accessible by users.
Hope that helps!

Hi Dan, thanks for the response.
I see what you mean about the two versions. It seems to be worse than that as well. The page was originally called "Stock for Sale" which is also indexed twice.
We were under the impression that using rel="canonical" would mean Google only indexed one url for the page. Even if older URL's are still used on the website. Should this other urls drop out of the index on their own?
As for the unclosed title and style tags. I don't see what you mean. To me they seem to be perfectly fine, and he haven't encountered any problems with these before.
Cheers

It appears as if you have two versions of the page indexed;
http://www.paulfrasercollectibles.com/Collectibles-for-Sale/1850.page
and
http://www.paulfrasercollectibles.com/Collectibles-for-Sale/
The rel="canonical" cites http://www.paulfrasercollectibles.com/Collectibles-for-Sale/1850.page as the page that should count in the index, however on your site its the other page which is linked to from the menu.
It would require a deeper look at things to tell what is going on for sure, but having duplicate versions of the same page in the index is certainly something of concern.
At quick glance I see a few other things that should be addressed when I view source; including a style tag and title tag not closing correctly.

Static content pages ranking dropping all the time
Hello all. I have been working three months in my current job in the hotel industry. I have been publishing a lot of content to our website (mainly articles), which in general have been ranking well and really boosted our website traffic. The problem that I am facing, though, is the fact that our static pages' rankings are basically constantly dropping. Especially one of our main pages, which is this hotel page. I haven't been doing any real changes to the content, but the ranking (with keywords "hotelli helsinki" [Hotel in Helsinki in Finnish]) has plummeted from 13th position all the way down to 19th... What has been happening during these last three months is that we did change to a new domain and we have done all the redirections and also informed Google about this change through search console. I have also done some minor changes to the on-page content, such as changing the meta titles and descriptions as well as the page title and some of the text content to more natural ones instead of clumsy SEO texts and optimizing the images. This hasn't helped at all though and the rankings seem to steadily drop all the time. What would YOU do with this page? Maybe add more text content to the page to be more informative? All tips would be highly appreciated.

Worth Dropping www. from Domain Name to Shorten URL
The Moz page grader identified several pages where the only problem is the length of the URL, above 75 characters. The site uses uses the www. prefix, and has for years, since 2001. Is it worth dropping the www. and doing a redirect to https://domainname.com to gain the 4 characters

Multiple page rank - harm or good?
Can someone explain this to me, as I just ranked a page on our website and intended to do the same for 3 other pages. our home page is currently ranked well, but after reading this (below from Moz) I'm concerned if i'm doing more harm then good. I just ranked the page 3 days ago, I haven't seen any drops yet. When multiple pages with the potential to rank well are combined into a single page, they not only stop competing with each other, but also create a stronger relevancy and popularity signal overall. This will positively impact your ability to rank well in the search engines. Thanks in advance, Lauren.

How we can rank two keywords
Here is my example. I developed a property inspection app, where the keyword I try to rank is property inspection app, and property inspection software. Property Inspection Software got slightly more traffic than app. I would like to rank both of this keyword high for my main website, but there is only one title, one H1 tag I can use to have keyword, where if I use "App" there is no way to have "Software" on the title, etc. How can I deal with such a case? Any help will be appreciate.

Keyword in URL: Ranking Factor?
I've got a site about a specific topic, which we'll call "themes" for the sake of this discussion. I personally like to keep the url structure short and clean (for usability purposes, but mainly because I'm a perfectionist and a minimalist). I feel that adding "themes" to the url structure is a bit redundant. However, nearly every keyword phrase that my site should rank for includes the word "themes." So I'm wondering how much I'm handicapping myself by not including the keyword "themes" in the url? The domain name itself sort of includes the keyword . . . although it's in Italian (I chose the domain for it's brand-ability, not for the keyword). A quick example: My Url Structure: www.themo.com/topic/abc My Competitor's Url Structure: www.sitesample.com/themes/topic/abc For many of the keywords, the competitors with the keyword in the url rank highest. But, I'm not sure how much emphasis to place on this, because from my understanding Google doesn't pay as much attention to url keywords anymore . . . and those sites might just be ranking high because they've been around for so long (which also happens to be the reason why they coincidentally also include the keyword in the url, because they started the site when that was a high ranking factor). Thoughts? Should I just trash my perfectionism and add the keyword to the url structure? (By the way, the site is only a couple months old and doesn't have any significant backlinks to inner pages yet, so changing the url structure wouldn't be a big deal if I decided to do that).

Is it difficult to rank for a keyword phrase with an H2 halfway down the page?
If your competitor has a page that is optimized for a keyword (title tag, URL, content) and you target the keyword halfway down a page with an H2 and a short paragraph about the keyword, are you at a strong disadvantage?
