Campaigns: How to Decide What to Track?
-
Hi There!
I'm new to SEOMoz, but not completely new to SEO. A bit of background: 9 year old content site, medium traffic (low 7 figures unique visitors yearly) with about 85% coming from SE traffic. (It was 75% but Panda seems to have bumped that up.)
I've created this with zero keyword research. I just built a site that I would have liked to have found online. It's a weight loss/fitness website with tools, calculators and articles.
I'm going to be working harder on getting traffic from other sources, but I signed up here because I want to make sure I'm taking full advantage of my site when it comes to SEO.
Having said that, I'm at a loss as to what to do with a campaign. My site is huge, with thousands of pages and keywords. I started a campaign, threw in a few keywords and some competitors just to get started, but this seems so...directionless.
How do I figure out what I want to analyze?
Thanks!
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,
The way most SEOs work is to move from low-hanging fruit to more challenging opportunities.
1. For most new users of SEOmoz who run their first PRO campaign, this means addressing the site audit in your crawl report, starting with the errors first.
You said you have a large site with 1000s of pages, so it's likely the crawl found 100s or even 1000s of errors on your site. This can make it a little overwhelming to know where to start.
Take advantage of the Help Guides. Here's the guide for the Crawl Diagnostics Tab. Read this top to bottom. If you don't know what something means, this is an excellent time to start researching. If you are faced with an overwhelming number of errors, there are a couple things you can do to prioritize.
- Sort the URLs of the errors by Page Authority. This will help you address your most important pages first.
- Export your crawl results to CSV. Once they are in a spreadsheet form, start to look for patterns. Multiple errors are often caused by the same problem, so making a small fix can sometimes lead to big results.
2. Add more keywords to your campaign. You can get these from Google Analytics. This Help Guide will guide you. Read articles on Keyword Research and find out what keywords you would like to rank higher for. Start to devise a plan.
3. Have you connected a Google Analytics account? This is extremely helpful. Yep, the Help Guides assist with that, too.
4. Check your On-Page reports. These are generated for any keyword/URL ranking in the top 50. Again, can you spot any patterns? Any changes you can make across your site to improve the keyword relevance of your pages? Try improving a handful of pages that already rank well for high volume keywords and see what happens. Experiment.
5. Analyze your links. Use Open Site Explorer Top Pages tab to make sure links to your site aren't being lost to broken URLs. Find out where are your best links are coming from and figure out how to do more of that. Look at your incoming anchor text. Does it mirror the keywords you are ranking for?
(Really, this is a much of a learning process as anything. But each step takes you further)
Examine the links of your competitor. Where did those links come from, and can you earn those same links? Where are your competitors stronger than you? How can you catch up? The keyword difficulty tool is great for this too.
6. Install the MozBar, if you haven't already. Start surfing everywhere with it. Use the tools to analyze pages and figuring out why they rank where they rank.
7. Even though your site has been around for years, there may have been some things overlooked. So pretend it's brand new . Watch this video from Rand about launching a site.
8. When you get stuck, browse old blog post, search Google, or ask a question here. The web is full of SEOs willing to help.
Hope this helps. Best of luck with your SEO!

I've been doing that, too. I see a few things I can clean up -- but it's nice to see some A and B report cards.
I just feel like I'm missing the point -- or some specific goals. Or a plan.
Thanks for the welcome!
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,
I feel the same way when I see the campaign view, it kind of just provides an overall view of how your site is crawled by SEOMoz, and how you stack up against the competition.
If you click on the "Research Tools" Tab on the Navigation Menu, you may find that this will help you start in the right direction. You can check to see if your pages are fully optimized for the keywords you want, how many backlinks you have coming in, whether or not you rank in the top 50 results for certain keywords, etc.

Analytics conversion tracking?
Hi One of our clients has a hotel chain currently which currently uses an online booking system which is from a third party. We are keen to set up conversion tracking to track the number of bookings made however are we able to do this if the URL destination is not on the clients website? Or will it be a case of just tracking the number of people who click the link to go to the third party payment site? Kind Regards

Track subdomains in the same analytics property/view
Hello to everyone, this is my first question (kind of a newbie here :-D). I have a website that spans over 4 subdomains + the main domain and I'd like to have a place where I can see the total page views, events and goal completions. Main domain is langhe.net, and subdomains are eventi.langhe.net, servizi.langhe.net, shop.langhe.net, about.langhe.net. The website is based on wordpress and I'm using google analytics for wordpress by yoast as analytics plugin. The configuration of the plugin is as follows: all the website have the same UA-XXXXXXXX code The Subdomain Traking field (setDomainName) is filled with .langhe.net Cross-Domain tracking is enabled Cross-Domain Primary Domain (setDomainName) is langhe.net Cross-Domain Tracking, Other Domains field is filled with: about.langhe.net, eventi.langhe.net, servizi.langhe.net, shop.langhe.net. In the GA property I've created an Advanced Custom Filter configured this way: Field A -> Extract A = hostname (.*) Field B -> Extract B = request URI (.*) Output To -> Constructor = request URI $A1$B1 Field A Required: yes Field B Required: No Override Output Field: yes Case Sensitive: no I was wondering it this is the best way of doing it, or if there are other "best practice" ways to obtain what I'm looking for (for example with this configuration it's become quite difficult to separate the traffic sources for each website). Thank you in advance 🙂

Tracking in Google Analytics
My site has just recently (or maybe not so recently...) had a great deal of https URL's indexed (I was really only able to find this out thanks to the recent update to the GWT Index Status). It appears that Googlebot picked up an ssl somewhere (I already know where) on my site and then proceeded to crawl and index pages with https rather than http. Since I understand the issue, it should be an easy fix. My question is, does Google Analytics support (track) both http AND https for one site, or would I need to set up two different tracking codes for http and https? I figured that I might as well grab some data from the https pages that are indexed before I try and remove them. I've done a little research on using Groupings/Groups but I figured I would reach out to the MOZ community to see if anyone else has worked with a similar issue. Thanks!

Cross Domain Tracking in GA (without cross domain links)
Hi everyone, Been doing some research about cross-domain tracking in Google Analytics (preferably Universal Analytics where documentation is a bit spare). All of the tutorials focus on the auto-linking and ensuring links to the other site are taken care of. I'm considering a site that may not cross-link like that at all (or it may, but won't be the main avenue). A good example is: www.gap.com
Reporting & Analytics | | ketanmv
www.bananarepublic.com
www.oldnavy.com Now, they do link to the other brands in their navigation but let's pretend that they don't necessarily do that. Gap Corporate may want to roll up all these domains into a single reporting profile because customers can clearly visit any of those sites on their own and buy. It would be nice to know that Visitor X bought 2 items from gap.com and 3 from oldnavy.com... and of course, here were their campaigns, etc. From what I am reading, I am not sure this is really possible. It seems that the cross-domain code is really only best for when my main site links to another domain for checkout or something. But in my example, we are definitely not in control of that kind of behavior. Thoughts? Perhaps I need to recommend they go with subdomains only which Universal GA seems to handle quite fine out of the box. Thank you!0 -

We would like to advertise the site on our personal car, using vinyl letters to display the domain name. Is there a way tu use the (.ca) http://www.pilatesboisfranc.ca advertise on my car and track that advertising using Analytics? I know I can use a URL something like http://www.pilatesboisfranc.com/health and track the hit, but using a shorter URL is the key. Can you help? Thank you, BigBlaze

Tracking Subdomains without access to Primary Domain
Hi, I have look after mutliple sub domains on a website and want to implement GA sub domain tracking across them. I do not have however have access to the primary domain as thats controlled by a larger organisation. I'm wondering how to set this up so it tracks correctly? Do I set the domain name in my property to the primary domain, or the main subdomain? For example I have test1.example.com (which is basically a homepage), test2.example.com, test3.example.com and test4.example.com which are various sections. As stated, I don't control the root example.com so Do I use setdomainname test1.example.com in the tracking code or setdomainname example.com. Apply filters etc and then setup profiles for each subdomain? Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

My question is it looks ugly. How do i shorten this ? Using bit.ly ? But isn't it true that URL shortening services such as bitly, as some can increase the likelihood of email being marked as spam
