Can I reduce link count by no following links?
-
Hi,
A large number of my pages contain over 100 links. This is due to a large drop down navigation which is on every page. To reduce my link count could I just no follow these navigation links or would I have to remove the navigation completely?
-
How is the large drop-down menu working for your site's visitors? Is there scope to improve the navigation and reduce the number of links?
If the navigation is important then you can't just remove it completely can you? I would take a look at how the site is being used and how well the navigation is helping visitors find what they're looking for. What's the reason this navigation exists? Can you use the current page to provide context and reduce the number of relevant links?
Once you know how important it is you'll be in a much better position to decide whether to remove it (or improve it) or not.

To my current knowledge Google treats internal nofollow links as followed for linkjuice purposes. Beeing a bit over 100 links is not too much of a problem. You might want to consider to consolidate a few pages into one. Another solution could be to noindex really unimportant pages (legal/disclaimer etc.)
I have a question myself: does Google crawl pages that are internally nofollowed?
-
Christopher is correct; the link juice is divided between all the links on the page whether the links have the nofollow attribute is lost. So, the suggestion that you can tell Google where to send the link juice (called PageRank sculpting) is erroneous.
You can block those pages from being crawled and indexed via your robots text, but again, it will not mean more link juice is passed to the crawled pages.
The concept of "too many links" was fostered by A Google Webmaster Guideline of some years ago that advised against more than 100 links on a page. Google warned that not all links were likely to be crawled if there were so many.
Google now says that is no longer an issue. However, that many links on a page can present an issue with usability for your site visitors and that should be your guiding light on the number of links per page.

It is my understanding, bases on other responses to this forum, that using nofollow does not improve the link juice passed to the follow links, but that the link juice that would have been passed to the nofollow link is lost.
Best,

I do not Think that it would reduce the number of links. However it would improve the link juice passed by the links that ARE followed. It is my impression that Google does not punish you for a large menu (if it is not extreme). Can you give a link where i can see the menu? What you really need to do is decide if the dropdown is necessary? If the links are truly usable for your users they are likely to be good for Google. Try and use google analytics to see if users actually use the navigation?

Correct Internal Linking Strategy
Hello. So my website currently has 8 pages in total. (Homepage, 5 Service Pages, Contact, About). I currently have about 80 quality RD and my Homepage already ranks #8 for my main keyword, while all Service Pages (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5) are stuck somewhere at #30-60 positions for their target keywords. My internal linking scheme looks like this https://i.imgur.com/2cA529v.png. The Homepage has a sidebar with links to all Service Pages, and each Service Page has the same sidebar that links to each Service Page, but doesn't link back to my Homepage. Contact and About pages can be accessed only via the links in the menu. I don't have any contextual links on my website, so all pages that are important for SEO are linked only via this same very sidebar. All these Service Pages are equally valuable to me, but they don't seem to grow much in Google. The Onpage Score of these pages is better than those of TOP10 competitors, and my content provides more value (I used the Skyscraper Technique). Taking all that into consideration, can you please tell me what might be wrong? Why Should I build more quality backlinks to these service pages instead of the homepage? Should I add contextual links to all my service pages from the homepage? Does my internal linking strategy look good to you? If not, what should I change? Can I hit top #10 with my internal pages for their target keywords if I mainly build links only to my homepage? All keywords that I'm after have low to medium competition. My website has 90 RD in total, and my website's DA is 27. Thank you. 2cA529v.png

Rel="no follow" for All Links on a Site that Charges for Advertising
If I run a site that charges other companies for listing their products, running banner advertisements, white paper downloads, etc. does it make sense to "no follow" all of their links on my site? For example: they receive a profile page, product pages and are allowed to post press releases. Should all of their links on these pages be "no follow"? It seems like a gray area to me because the explicit advertisements will definitely be "no followed" and they are not buying links, but buying exposure. However, I still don't know the common practice for links from other parts of their "package". Thanks

How does your crawler treat ajax links?
Hello! It looks like the seomoz crawler (and google) follows ajax links. Is this normal behavior? We have implemented the canonical element and that seems to resolve most of the duplicate content issues. Anything else we can do? Example: Krom

Image Link
If I have an image that is well optimiswed for a keyword that the page it is on is ranking for but i put a no follow in the image link - is this going to lose the value of the image on that page. A strange question i know but this image i have on my homepage is optimised around a keyword, the image is also a link but when i changed the link in the image to no follow i seem to have dropped rankings for that keyword. Probably consicidence but i thought i would throw this question out there and get some views?

Does the Referral Traffic from a Link Influence the SEO Value of that Link?
If a link exists, and nobody clicks on it, could it still be valuable for SEO? Say I have 1000 links on 500 sites with Domain Authority ranging from 35 to 80. Let's pretend that 900 of those links generate referral traffic. Let's assume that the remaining 100 links are spread between 10 domains of the 500, but nobody ever clicks on them. Are they still valuable? Should an SEO seek to earn more links like those, even though they don't earn referral traffic? Does Google take referral data into account in evaluating links? 5343313-zelda-rogers-albums-zelda-pictures-duh-what-else-would-they-be-picture3672t-link-looks-so-lonely.jpg Sad%20little%20link.jpg
