My organic search results are down 16% since the Penguin update 4/24

Penguin has affected my search results down 16%
When I look at my SEOmoz scan the only problem I see is "too many on page links"
The problem is that my blog for each month is considered one page-eg august 2007 I wrote many blogs-the total on page links was 106-but that included all the blogs that were written in a month.
The other problem area is duplicate content.
I thought Penguin was after "link farming" which I do not do.
Any advice how I can correct this?

Hi Wianno,
As mentioned, Penguin seemed to hit over-optimized and spammy link profiles, so this would be a great place to look.
Dr. Pete wrote a great post about it last week which is well worth looking into:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/penguins-pandas-and-panic-at-the-zoo
That said, if you have a duplicate content problem, it's well worth addressing even if you haven't seen a ranking drop because of it. No guarantees, but simply fixing duplicate content problems often has the effect of causing a traffic rise.
In the end, it may be easier to deal with dupe content that over-optimized anchor text, but take a look at both if you can.
Hope this helps. Best of luck with your SEO!

no it just happened-I made no changes
There were one or two other days in the last 3 weeks where it dropped to say 132 and then back to over 700 on its own
-
Wianno168 - Did you change anything that you believe may have lead to the partial recovery (from 95 hits to 550-700)? If so, please describe what you did.
-
Thank you for your answer.
After the April 24 drop to 95 the site has recovered to 550-700 hits a day down from 800
-
Is 95 hits a typo? Because if not your traffics dropped closer to 84%, and I would say it's penguin with a dead cert and advise reading some of the posts on recovery floating around.
Either way I would identify which keywords you have lost the most traffic on and review your link profile. Right now large % of exact match anchors seem to be a strong signal Penguin is in play.
-
Thank you. It seems rather specific.
April 23 I got over 700 hits-April 24 -95 hits then setadily declining since then to about 16 % drop in organic search hits.
After Panda last year my visits increased 20%??
-
First an aside, duplicate content is often a rather large problem, so i would try using some url re-writes or meta-robots to see if you can improve on that.
Other then that, the penguin update and other updates around it were largly aimed at inbound links. It's likly a lot of your links are of less value, or your link profile is now seeming 'less natural'
I would work out where you have lost the traffic (keyword rankings and what they were bringing in) and then see if you've gotten any per page penelties e.t.c.
If you got penalised for a major keyword for example, you may be able to restore your previous traffic levels.
If it's accross the bored ranking drops I would work on improving your link profile in general.
If it's a traffic drop with no ranking drops, your probably seeing a seasonal variation, or something has effected your clickthrough rates (is there a new effective competitor with a better adword or Organic meta description?)
I think thats most of the bases covered. Anything more precise then that would require some data analysis.
Oh, on too meny links, I wouldn't worry about it at all unless that page has vanished from the SERPS. 106 links isn't a huge amount on a blog.

'domain:example.com/' is this line with a '/' at the end of the domain valid in a disavow report file ?
Hi everyone Just out of curiosity, what would happen if in my disavow report I have this line : domain:example.com**/** instead of domain:example.com as recommended by google. I was just wondering if adding a / at the end of a domain would automatically render the line invalid and ignored by Google's disavow backlinks tool. Many thanks for your thoughts

Subdomain/subfolder question
Hi community, Let's say I have a men's/women's clothing website. Would it be better to do clothing.com/mens and clothing.com/womens OR mens.clothing.com and womens.clothing.com? I understand Moz's stance on blogs that it should be clothing.com/blog, but wanted to ask for this different circumstance. Thanks for your help!

Website Redesign / Switching CMS / .aspx and .html extensions question
Hello everyone, We're currently preparing a website redesign for one of our important websites. It is our most important website, having good rankings and a lot of visitors from Search Engines, so we want to be really careful with the redesign. Our strategy is to keep as much in place as possible. At first, we are only changing the styling of the website, we will keep the content, the structure, and as much as URLs the same as possible. However, we are switching from a custom build CMS system which created URLs like www.homepage.com/default-en.aspx
Technical SEO | | NielsB
No we would like to keep this URL the same , but our new CMS system does not support this kind of URLs. The same with for instance the URL: www.homepage.com/products.html
We're not able to recreate this URL in our new CMS. What would be the best strategy for SEO? Keep the URLs like this:
www.homepage.com/default-en
www.homepage.com/products Or doesn't it really matter, since Google we view these as completely different URLs? And, what would the impact of this changes in URLs be? Thanks a lot in advance! Best Regards, Jorg1 -
Different pages first results on same keyword search
Hi, Sometimes Google does not show the page you intended for a certain keyword. Logically you would say that the intended page is not relevant/strong enough. But in my case several pages ranked fine for a long period of time and all of a sudden another less important page gets the highest result on a keyword search. (We are in the camping business) For instance: One of our campsites called Tenuta primero used to rank position 9 in google with page below for a long time (search: 'camping tenuta primero') This was the page we intended to rank with. http://www.suncamp.nl/nl/nl/campings/italie/friuli-venezia-giulia/camping-tenuta-primero/uc19-l1-n797-c13-r115-cp104959/ Now all of a sudden the position for search 'camping tenuta primero' is position 33 with review page below. http://www.suncamp.nl/nl/nl/campings/italie/friuli-venezia-giulia/camping-tenuta-primero/beoordelingen/uc19-l1-n797-c13-r115-cp104959-t22598/ What could have caused this? Pages are in Dutch but main keywords are camping are tenuta primero. Thank you very much in advance! Kind regards, Dennis Overbeek Dennis@acsi.eu | www.suncamp.nl |

I now understand that I basically have 4 URLs www.ablemagazine.com (Page Authority: 38/100) www.ablemagazine.co.uk (Page Authority: 47/100) ablemagazine.com (Page Authority: 3/100) ablemagazine.co.uk (Page Authority: 51/100) What should be configuration be to ensure I'm not loosing masses amounts of linkjuice? At the moment I have ablemagazine.co.uk set as my default domain in webmaster tools. www.ablemagazine.com www.ablemagazine.co.uk and ablemagazine.com all 301 redirect here (I think)
