Link Profile, is the keyword ratio too high?
-
Hi,
Our website (www.NutritionMission.co.uk) has dropped from 6 to 30 in the ranking for our main keyword (Nutritional Therapy).
Pulling a spreadsheet off of all the inbound links looks like 41% of anchor text is related to Nutritional Therapy.
Is this ratio too high for the new google update? There are also a lot of directory submissions from the SEO people we were paying before.
Anyone point me on the right track to get some idea to how to work things out? ie. add more links to ratio of anchor text is lowered etc.
Kind Regards,
Ian.

Hi Ian,
I would have to agree that it does look like your backlink profile may have contributed to your recent drop in rankings.
The recent Google update, as rightly stated by Jordan, has centered around over-optimization. This has meant that many sites which have focussed on creating links with mainly commercial anchors such as 'nutritional therapy' or 'nutritional therapist' have been hit hard by the latest algorithm update.
Rob Kerry produced a really interesting Whiteboard Friday recently, where he talks about the over-optimization of anchor text.

Having looked at your backlink profile I would suggest that you focus on building more brand specific anchor links (http://www.nutritionmission.co.uk or Nutrition Mission) as these look more natural than the large number of commercial anchors you currently have.
Adam.

Thanks Chaps, really good info as usual.

Hey Ian,
Hard to say for sure without doing some more detailed analysis, but I would say it's a warning flag for sure.. A lot of Google's changes recently revolve around "over-optimization" and spam/crap links, blog networks, etc.
41% of your backlinks are exact match anchor text for "nutritional therapy", that doesn't look natural at all.
We are doing a back link study right now and some sites who are ranking very well for big keywords have little to NO exactly keyword match anchor text links to their site. They have really good on-page describing the KW they are targeting and have very high quality/authoritative links spread through their sites, usually with their brand name or URL, and sometimes with a keyword.
You should check out a very good article on SEO Gadget about this
Link Building: Anchor Text Optimisation Best Practices in 2012 - https://seogadget.co.uk/link-building-anchor-text-optimisation-best-practices/
Hope that helps,
Jordan

Hello Debi-Ann!
In my opinion I think your drop in the serp is because of links coming from link directories and spam blogs. These links don't count much (if any) after Google's Penguin update.
Yes it's possible Google uses the anchor text to spot unnatural link building.
For you getting some really good links from some authoritative sites might be really helpful.
I'm not a Google employee, just my guess.

Can you regain any SERPs / link juice of links that have 404'd?
We have a client whose 301 redirects disappeared and have been gone for about 6 months now. We are going to be putting the 301 redirects back in place. Will we be able to regain any of the previous SERPs or link juice from old links or is all lost? Thanks in advance!

How to rank for several keywords
Hi there Mozers, So far I have been building my webshop ouibonjour.com over the course of several weeks while studying the awesome educational content here on Moz and other SEO-related sites. I think I have done an OK job so far, and I have managed to rank #1 on several long tail keywords after a couple of weeks. Problem is - there are more long tail keywords I want to rank #1 for as well! **What I have done so far: ** I have taken the strongest keywords that can generate conversion and added them in page titles, title heads, main anvigation titles, in my alt text in images and so forth. The page is not screaming "SEO!" and I am happy with that. Nevertheless, I think the SEO measures here are done in an effective way. If you bothered to click on my page, you can see that the home page has only 5 posts (posts, not pages). They redirect visitors to other important parts of my site, and I change the image and/or the title once every 3 weeks to not keep the page too static. In a /magazine subfolder, I have a blog that ranks pretty good for several keywords, but the content here is not directly related to my products, but rather articles that fits the interests of my potential buyers (lifestyle, culture, etc). **What I need - but not sure how - to do: ** I basically want to rank for way more long tail keywords that relate to my products, but I don't want to continue setting up posts that have these keywords, because the content on the main page will be too heavy on the SEO, and therefore lose value for my visitors. How can I rank for more keywords without having to pepper my site with posts full of these keywords? I do not want to write articles on my blog that focuses on different combinations of long tail keywords neither, because it will get too spammy and make my visitors not return. I need help! I hope I have managed to explain my problem clearly. If there are any Whiteboard Fridays or posts on this subject that I have missed, please link me directly. If not, I would be tremendously happy and appreciative for any tips and tricks 🙂

Someone is building anchor text links with child porn keywords..help :-(
Hey Everyone; I recently found that there are tons of links to my url (30+) from several sites with the anchor text "download child porn, kiddie porn, and the likes". Although the sites linking to us where the person built the links do not have this content (thank god) it is just my url + the horrible anchor text someone is putting. [added image] Obviously I would not do that to my own site especially since I was ranked for over 15 keywords in the top 5 spots on Google and Bing. I am guessing its a competitor and I am wondering that is there any way I can remove them? Is this negative seo? Also could this be the reason my site has dropped off google page 1 last month for all my positions? I am consistently trying to rebuild but my positions are flying all over the place. Im going from ranking #12 one week to #198 the next; then to #60 and finally not even on google or bing anymore; then back to #50, etc for the past month and a half... Its very aggravating and it has hurt a few of my websites; im at a total loss on how to recover now if this is the case...It seems they have started to build these links in January from what I can find on the postings.. Thank you SEOMOZ im so happy im a member now. Any suggestions on how i can get these links off or if it is why my site has lost its original rankings.. Should I just can my website and start all over with a different URL? How can I watch out for this in the future? Any help would be so so so greatly appreciated and valued 🙂 xpVjMw8

Ratio of linking C-blocks to Linking domains
Hi, Our linkbuilding efforts have resulted in acquiring a high number of backlinks from domains within a C-block. We all know Google issues penalties whenever someone's link profile looks unnatural. A high number of backlinks but a low number of linking C-blocks would seem to be one of reasons to get penalized. Example: we have 6,000 links from 200 linking root domains coming in from 100 C-blocks. At what point should we start to worry about being penalized/giving off an unnatural look to mr G?

Paid outbound links - do they have juice?
Hi, A client is asking about a website that has a business model I don't normally work with - it's a site full of very informative articles - no harm there - and they are sponsored by companies who provide the service being discussed. Not really any harm there. But attached to the link is an outbound tracking device. The business model is pay per click. Has anyone had experience with this, specifically if larger search engines have picked up on this and filtered out those types of links to not count very much if at all? Thanks!

Would this be considered keyword cannabalization?
If I have an article, titled 7 signs of unhealthy eating and the title tag for five different pages looks like this: keyword | article title ex: Binge Eating | 7 Signs of Unhealthy Eating ex: Lack of Fruits & Vegetables | 7 Signs of Unhealthy Eating etc, etc.
