Will a link from a competitor help me to out rank them?
-
Greetings mozers,
One of my competitors and I both rank on the first page for our main keyword. They have 37k+ links, me only like 300 or so. My company actually has a business location though. This other site is just a listing of locations and they build sites for most of my competitors.
If I were able to get listed on their site, would that make me a stronger competitior with them?
And we would probably only get a brand term link from them but not a main keyword anchor text.
Will it be as effective to get the link from them if it's only for my brand name?
Thanks, Cy

Thanks for the response,
I have checked out their backlink profile and it is strong. They do act as a hub for similar businesses in my area, they also have a strong .edu and .org profile. They build sites for other businesses in my area and have those sites link back to this 'hub' site. So all the links are relevant.
They have also been featured on sites like the huffingtonpost.com which isn't really related to my industry but the huff-post's link profile is massive.
I'm current'y working on content and building links. So it seems only logical to try to join forces with them. I've spoken to this agency and they seem eager to help, but we haven't spoken about at what cost yet.
I think it will be a good investment, hoping to get a little more encouragement from the boards tho.

It sounds like your competitor is quite strong, to have that many links, and it may be regarded as a hub in your industry, if it already is working together with a lot of your competitors. The previous answer was right - you need to take a look at the links of the competitor, and see if it has a strong link profile (vs tons of automated link spam).
If you consider the site to be respected in your industry, I would probably invest the effort to get listed on their site.
In the long run, as a local competitor, you should be able to beat out a national competitor, through a combination of:
-
building a stronger, more interesting landing page and content
-
building more links to that landing page (both branded and keyword links as appropriate)

To be honest it’s never about number of links pointing to your website it’s always about the quality of links pointing back to your site.
You have to analyze their link profile to see if the links pointing to them are quality or they are just some low quality links to increase the total number of links to the site (this is common). If they are quality then your should put your effort in following the footstep of your competitors… but if you think they are not worth investing links then I would prefer to continue investing your time and money on quality and natural link building…as it is long term!
To get competitor’s link list Open Site Explorer or Majestic SEO will work best!

What is the importance of root domains linking to your website in Google's rankings? I notice our competition has a much higher number on keywords I'm analyzing. Thank you!
I've noticed our competition has a much higher number of "root domains" linking to their page than we do. Is this simply a result of more websites linking to them? How long does it normally take to build up these numbers/rankings? (I'm assuming it's a concerted effort, which I'll be researching.) Thank you!

Does Google drop links from page rank N/A sources?
Hi Everyone,
Link Building | | AMA-DataSet
I've started doing some link analysis on one of my site that has over nearly 800 links in total (which I got from the webmaster tools downloading the latest links). When I go on to Google and use the "link:www.mysite.com" directive it will only display 12 links. Does this mean Google is only counting 12 links from the link profile? Iv checked the freshness of some the links it wasn't displaying within Google to check they hadn't all expired. Links from march 2013 still don't appear. This sites link profile has been untouched for at least a year now and is full of directories many of which have a page rank of N/A hence my question. (I'm surprised it hasn't been hit by penguin!) Thanks in advance.0 -
Do footer links pass less link juice?
One of my best inbound links for PA and DA happens to be a footer link, curious if it's less valuable or has any value at all.

Are the following considered bad links for Link Building.
I've been doing a lot of research lately on link building & I've read a lot about having a diverse amount of links. Social links, Blog links, comment links, footer links, No follow links, Directory links as well as links with Anchor text URL match, brand match, partial brand match, non-descriptive, and with keywords. But there is a lot of talk of removing those links that look like a site that's built just for link building purposes.... but Directories are basically built for link building are they not? I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if they feel links from the following directories would be bad links. (Non-Paid) http://www.yoganza.com http://www.wkool.com http://www.wee-directory.com http://www.voicelet.com www.hotfrog.ca http://www.webdirectorieslist.com http://multiplelistingboard.com http://mozdirectory.net http://freedirectorypr.info Industry specific below: http://bestautolinks .com http://automotivedome.com http://automobilebuzz.com http://craigsautolinks.com Thanks so much for the help!

Linking Root Domains V.s Total Links
When analysing a company's inbound links, what is more important to note: The number of linking root domains, or the total number of links? And why?

JavaScript is crawled by search engines, isn’t it? Does it mean that links embedded in JavaScript pass link juice?
I wonder If links embedded in JavaScript from an external Website pass link juice to the linked page and thus have a positive effect on google rankings. I read that JavaScipt is craweld. Does it mean that also the link juice is passed? I'm looking forward to your answers.

Link value
Hi I have some links from blogs to our ecom website. My question is if anyone knows what happens if you have several different blogs on .blogspot linking in to you. Does that make them loose value because they are on the same domain? I can probably quite easily have 5-10 blogs on blogspot all with PA of 35-40 link in to us. Is it worth striving for or should i strive to get blogs that have their own domain to link into us instead ? Or equally important ? Dan Lærum

Our competitor, Gaiam.com is able to get links back from Youtube. How are they doing this?
When I use Open Site Explorer to look at our competitor's link profile, I notice that Gaiam.com is getting lots of valuable links from their videos on Youtube. We have a lot of videos on Youtube as well and are not receiving links back. What is the secret? Our website address is fully shown in the profile and we seem to match them - what are we missing? Thanks
