How to ask for forgiveness from the Google God?
-
Ok so maybe not ask for "forgiveness" because I am not sure what we did to get penalized.
I believe our site is being penalized 1. most of our usual keywords are not ranked in their usual placements in the search results. 2. some of our keywords are listing the wrong pages as search results and 3. our search results are landing on pages 8 or 9 on Google (not 2 or 3 as before).
This is an ecommerce site. How do we figure out what trigger the penalty (if at all) and how do we fix it so that we can get our ranking back (is that even possible)?
Please advise - much help is needed!

I thought there's no such thing as duplicate content on site penalty? We have products that have"sample" products. The sample product does have the sample content as it's parent product. But we have had this for years. Will message you. Thank you.

Hey Mof3kz,
In my experience, a sudden drop like this is most likely an indication of a content problem on the site itself. The fact that you mention that this is an ecommerce site only furthers this opinion and if you are using the default, manufacturers product descriptions for your content then you could have been slightly filtered due to weak or duplicate content.
If you would like to post a URL I would be happy to take a look for you as I have some experience here, alternatively, you can message me the URL if it is sensitive.
I would suggest reading this post from Dr. Pete before you do anything else:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/fat-pandas-and-thin-content
You can also check the likelihood of content problems with the copyscape plagiarism tool:
Copyscape will show you pages on your site that similar to pages on other sites and it ranks them by likelihood to be causing a problem so again, it can be more evidence that you have been flagged as a weak result and are being buried in the deep, dark result pages.
With anything like this, it's hard to be completely sure and at best you can only be fairly confident about certain things. The job here is to identify any and all problems that MAY be causing the issue and start to work on the problems. From experience, content is often the best place to start so I sincerely hope this helps.
Post a link though, happy to take a look as I am sure many others here are two (with many eyes, you will get much valuable feedback).
Hope this helps!
Marcus
P.S. If you have a content type problem, there is no need to 'ask' for forgiveness, just get rid of the problems and the great and merciful google will cast down a blessing!

Hi Mof3kz,
Whenever I had to deal with a similar situation to yours I was always checking what we have done, what did change in the past few weeks.
Even, if you have been working with some great link partners, take your time and write an email. Ask them if they have experienced a fluctuation lately in the search engines on their ranking.
Possible situations:
1. The major link partners have experienced big fluctuations, maybe their links profile had a bigger change and since you are connected it will in some way effect you too.
2. They didn't experience any fluctuations: this is when you ask yourself, ok, then what the hell happened here? Stay chill! try to get on-site ask yourself if you are optimizing the right way. Try to avoid any possible issue from your site, add better content if possible, check for crawlability, etc. etc.
3. The link partners tell you they have experienced some kind of fluctuations, but not big ones. Now this part is tricky. As we all know, search engines like Google are constantly changing the algorithms, trying out new filters to show up the most relevant content. Some filter (new or existing one) has triggered out your possible loss. It might be temporary, it might be something stable. In these cases I usually advice the same thing as @ the point 2.
I hope this resolves your situation! Good luck!
Gr.,
Istvan

Not all images indexed in Google
Hi all, Recently, got an unusual issue with images in Google index. We have more than 1,500 images in our sitemap, but according to Search Console only 273 of those are indexed. If I check Google image search directly, I find more images in index, but still not all of them. For example this post has 28 images and only 17 are indexed in Google image. This is happening to other posts as well. Checked all possible reasons (missing alt, image as background, file size, fetch and render in Search Console), but none of these are relevant in our case. So, everything looks fine, but not all images are in index. Any ideas on this issue? Your feedback is much appreciated, thanks

Google only crawling a small percentage of the sitemap
Hi, The company which I work for have developed a new website for a customer, there URL is https://www.wideformatsolutions.co.uk I've created a sitemap which has 25,555 URL's. I submitted this to Google around 4 weeks ago and the most crawls that have ever occurred has been 2,379. I've checked everything I can think of, including; Speed of website Canonical Links 404 errors Setting a preferred domain Duplicate content Robots Txt .htaccess Meta Tags I did read that Matt Cutts revealed in an interview with Eric Enge that the number of pages Google crawls is roughly proportional to your pagerank. But I'm sure it should crawl more than 2000 pages. The website is based on Opencart, if anyone has experienced anything like this I would love hear from you.

My Old Domain is Not Changing in Google
I have taken over the following domain www.choice-cottages.co.uk, part of the contract was to re-direct the old site www.choicecottages.info to the new site. Unfortunately I am only a middle man in the arrangement as the website is hosted with another company. The switch was done well over 4 weeks ago, the re-direct itself is working fine. However if you google choice cottages you will see the first listing is www.choicecottages.info, then I have my new site below for a few listings. Google is definitely updating something as before the old domain had lots of site links but this has reduced to a few. Does anyone know anything on this, as in the past it only takes a couple of days to update. Many thanks Andy

Adding Google + to SEOmoz
I wanted to add my google + signature to every post I make on SEOmoz and I think every user should do the same... Two reasons why... Google helps our existence so we should help theirs. If someone likes what I wrote or vice versa we should be able to follow each other in a simple click. In my opinion all blogs forum posts etc... should Lead to a user not a website, this will prevent spam and help people network. In other words blog spammers and forum spammers will be SOL (Which they all ready are lol).

Google Search Parameters
Couple quick questions. Is using the parameter pws=0 still useful for turning off personalization? Is there a way to set my location as a URL parameter as well? For instance, I want to set my location to United States, can this be done with a URL param the same way as pws=0?

Why Google did not index our domain?
Hi, We launched tmart 60 days ago and submitted to google, bing, yahoo 20 days later. But google had never indexed our website still when yahoo indexed it in one week. What we have checked or tried: 1. We got 20~50 inlinks in one month and now 81 inlinks via yahoo site explorer. 2. This domain has registered for 13 years and we purchased it from sedo last year. We

did not find any problems from domain archive pages. 3. Page similar: the homepage is 50% similar to one of our competitors when we just launched.
So we adjusted the page structure and modified the content one month later and decreased the similarity to 30% (by tools from webconfs.com) 4. Google Robots: googlebot crawled our website every day after we submitted for indexing.
We opened GWT account for it and added the xml sitemap last week. GWT said nothing
was wrong except the time of page loading. Our questions: Why google did not indexed our website? What should we do? Thanks, wu0
