When placing content on external sites, what are some best practices for back links?
-
Hi there,
I am working on a content strategy that includes placing content (i.e. bylined articles, how-to's, guest blogs, etc.) on other web sites and embedding links back to our site. In some cases we're very limited to what we can do with our bank links (i.e. just a company url), and in other cases we are free to place multiple anchor links within the content.
In cases where we have no limitations, what are some best practices for implementing back links? I understand it's important to link to deep pages (not just our home page), have diverse anchor text, and make the anchor links relevant to the surrounding content.
Are there other things I should be thinking about in order to maximize the SEO value of such placements? For example, is it better to have just one anchor link per placement? Or should I aim to embed multiple anchor links within a single placement?
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Sincerely,
Debra

No more is NOT better unless it adds relevance to the article. Again, I add 2 as a rule of thumb. Also the first link is typically the one that passes any link juice if it is "do-follow". So make the first one the winner.

Thanks Mark. Suppose I can work in multiple in the manner you described, where the links are clearly helpful to the article. Is the belief in this situation that more is, in fact, better? Or does having multiple links dilute the value of any individual link?

Stephen, when you say "in the case you describe, they would not be editorially given," can you elaborate? Let's say I were to stick to just one or two links back to our site at most. What would be considered editorially given? And what would not?
Thanks!

Agreed with Stephen - I wouldn't go with more than 2 links on any editorial piece unless it makes sense to. An example would be that the article or content refers to various steps or pages on your site that give great information on solving or describing the article position.
An example would be if you were doing an article on motorcycle repair and Wikipedia had 4 articles that supported this position. Obviously linking to all 4 would make sense as long as the context is apparent and helpful to the article.

Multiple anchor texts are likely to appear spammy and not editorially given (in the case you describe, they would not be editorially given)
I suggest you place links in a natural manner rather than trying to cram them on the page

I've been using Link Detox from linkresearchtools.com against the list of back links provided in my GWT account although it seems it is not enough. What tools are the best at identifying toxic links?

Duplicate Content Link Juice
Hello SEO Community, So sometimes I will pitch one guest post to multiple outlets and if multiple reply positively, I will tell all but the single most authoritative site that the article is being published elsewhere and it won't be unique for their site. But some don't mind and still post anyway. I definitely don't mind because it just means that more people will read my article and more sites will be linking back to me. What are the implications on the link juice from the most authoritative site? What about the other ones (which are still authoritative, just not as much)? Is there any reason I should explicitly tell them not to post if I know it will appear somewhere else? Thanks much,

Host a wordpress blog as a folder or external site?
I've been speaking to our developers as I want to introduce a blog. My intention is to host the blog as part of our existing site, so the url becomes www.example.com/blog I have a personal wordpress blog and I love it, the amount of plugins, themes and ease of use makes it a fantastic platform. I spoke to my developers and requested if they could install Wordpress within a folder of our existing website. This gives me control to do plugins, custom themes etc. Straight forward I thought, but I didn't get a straight forward reply. They went on that it would require two linux php servers, a load balancer between them, and set up and configuration would take 5 days. Their day rates are high, so 5 days is a lot of money. This got me thinking, what if I hosted it externally and linked from our website, so the blog URL would be www.myblog.com This gives me the power to have a wordpress blog for cheap and use all the fantasic plugins to optimise the site (Yoast, Schema plugins etc). I know for SEO, it's better to host it as part of your existing site, the ranking juice remains in your area and it further helps strengthen the site. But then i'm thinking, if the wordpress stand alone blog works out, it will end up being a great external linker, further boosting my existing site's presense. Have any of you faced any similar problems? Thoughts?

What is the best way to get unique links?
I do SEO for an online store that sells vacuum cleaners. I write a lot of articles for yahoo, hub pages, etc as well as promoted press releases. But I'm looking to get some more unique links. I'm looking for any tips I can get. I've done tons of directories that have actually got a couple keywords on the front page of google but I'm looking to shy away from link directories. I write a few articles every week. I also try and create new social networking sites for the business. Does anyone have any new ideas?

Links per Site vs. Domain Authority
Here's a quaint one: 1. Posting follow links on another site helps increase one's domain authority. 2. If I post to the same site/forum with followed links each week, would my domain authority reap a domain authority increase benefit? In short, is there any domain authority benefit to continually post links to a site to which I've already posted a follow link?

How do you find out what (and when) new websites are linking to your site?
I may be missing the obvious here, but is there any way (a programme or site) of seeing what new links come into your site? Obviously as anyone who works in SEO, I like to see which links we have got with the work we put in contacting webmasters, etc. But is there a better way than just manually looking through ALL the links? Any help will appreciated.
