What is everyone doing to reduce the number of links on a page?
-
Some clients of mine have sites that are throwing the "too many links on one page" error and we're not just talking a little more than the status quo 100 links, it's much more. I believe it could be due to the fly-out navigation.
My Solution: shorten the Tier 2 categories in the left nav down to 5 and add a "View All" link after the 5th and remove top nav fly-outs. I'm not sure if these are best practices or the best for usability though?

Thank you, Ryan. Looks like we're on the same page I'm going to relay this to my web developer.

When I redesigned our main site the navigation looked something like what you described. I cut our main navigation options down to 5, with no flyout navigation. I had to debate the other stakeholders about this choice, but I finally convinced them it was the way to go. Our conversions doubled when the new site rolled out.
One of the tenets of good UX is: Don't overwhelm your user with too much choice.
I think if you can find a way to significantly reduce their menu, you'll not only improve the SEO but you'll make for a better user experience as well.
Another thing to consider about flyout menu's is "How will this work on mobile and tablets?" The scary answer is "Usually not at all".
I guess what I'm rambling towards is that I think you should probably reorganize their navigation to reduce the number of options, get rid of the dropdown aspects, and move the secondary dropdown menu items onto an on-page secondary menu on the pages themselves.

How to view all 'followed internal links' on a page
I am trying to view all the followed internal links on a few pages of my website. The MOZ toolbar just gives me the total number of internal followed links. What is the best way to actually see all the internal links that are followed by the google bot from any particular page? Thanks in advance.

If I put 'keyword/url' combination to 'stop run weekly', will it dissapear from the summary page in the on-page grader?
The summary page of the on-page grader chooses the keyword and url combination itself. Now if I choose another combination, I would like the former to dissapear from the summary page. The only option is 'stop running weekly'. But will it disappear from the list also?

Is the on-page link count a distinct count or a gross count?
My Crawl Diagnostic report is showing too many on-page links (~120-141). Is this a count of distinct links (i.e. example.com and example.com/?q count as 2)?

Duplicate pages
Hi, I am using a CMS that generates dynamic urls that according to the SeoMoz tool will be indexed as duplicate pages. The pages in questions are forms, blog-posts etc. that are not crucial to achieve ranking for. I do worry though about the consequences of having 20 (non-duplicate)pages with static urls and about 100 pages that are duplicates with dynamic urls. What consequences will this have for the speed that the robots crawl the site and could there be negative effects on ranking for the entire domain?

Are footer links at the end of each page still considered to be a valid tactic?
This is pretty much an opinion question, I was under the impression that footer links had been devalued almost to the point of uselessness, and if they weren't going to be of any real use to the users of the site why bother. I was speaking to a web developer though whose opinion I do largely trust who remains very pro footer links, and I was wondering what everyone else thought. Am I being too dismissive, or are footer links on the way out?

Page Authority
I have recently optimised a set of images for a client of ours: I'm looking through all the PA of these newly optimised images, and have varying PA {from SEOmoz toolbar} I understand that internal linking will pass link juice, and obviously external links will add to the overall PA. I have several pages with a PA of 36: { Fairly deep pages} Yet they have no external or internal links going to them. My question is "How can a page gain any authority when it has no visible links pointing at it?" Obviously there must be a link pointing at it {internally} as Google wouldn't have crawled the page right? Also lets say all the keywords are of equal competitiveness would the keywords with highest PA rank higher than those on O PA pages. Many Thanks
