Working with Open Site Explorer
-
Hi everyone,
I'm new to keyword analysis, and am in the process of consuming a lot of SEOmoz articles and resources on the subject.
I wanted to see if I'm correct in my analysis of two compared sites, and hope you can shed some light on the matter.
I've been to the Google Keyword Tool and looked for my informational keywords for the project I'm working on, since the user intent is all about information.
A not-so-great keyword phrase I've found with 12,100 local monthly searches is:
"programa de inglês" (english programme)
I'm just using this as a quick example.
I have performed a Google search query for the above phrase from google.com.br (Brazil), and I'm comparing the #2 and #4 results from the 1st page of the SERPs which are: #2) www.programa-ingles.net and #4) http://www.baixaki.com.br/categorias/educacao-e-diversao.htm.
What's confusing me is that in Open Site Explorer, the #4 result gets a much higher page authority compared to the #2 result, and beats #2 on every category except for internal–external link ratio and all the social categories.
Here's an image attached of the comparison.
Is it the fact that the external links of #2 account for 100% of the links pointing to it, or that the #2 position beats (rather pitifully) #5 on social sharing, or is it something that I've not stumbled across yet?
Thanks in advance for helping out a n00b.

Thanks a lot for this, Robert. It really helps.

Hello and Welcome Clement,
If you could be so kind as to give us a screen shot of the SERP showing the above result, that would be beneficial in a situation like this. The reason being, that it provides additional info as to how you are performing the search and, often a good screen shot will allow us to see the query parameters in the query string.
But, I am fairly sure the reason you are seeing the result you are is due to you having searched this term many times and likely have clicked on the programa-ingles.net. remember, the search engines are trying to learn what you like and placing cookies to "assist" your search. Those cookies make your analysis to be flawed.Notice that programa-ingles.net does not show in my search (it is not in top 30).
When I do the search, having never searched on that term on Google.com.br, I get the screen shot labeled: _broad search, programa de ingles. _Note on my result, Baixaki is the first organic result. Now to prove the point, I am giving you a second screen shot of the same search where I then put a comma (,) and added the exact domain name: programa-ingles.net. Given I am also adding the domain, surely it will beat Baixaki... but it doesn't because even with the domain, Baixaki is too strong and likely clicked on a ton. Baixaki is second and programa-ingles.net is fifth.
One way you can try to achieve this result is to use an incognito browser (Chrome) and you will likely get the result I am. Another is to add &pws=0 to the query string.
Here, from Dr. Pete is an excellent post on using depersonalization
That should help you a whole lot.

Open Site Explorer: Facebook Shares, Likes, etc.
I don't fully understand what this means in the report for our site: http://screencast.com/t/aG5jbkYWLA here is our site: www.discountqueens.com & we have thousands of fans & facebook likes and all the time on all our posts. For example yesterday we had 73 likes on this post alone: http://www.discountqueens.com/amazon-ultimate-shrinky-dinks-jewelry-designer-1495/ So here's my questions: Is there an error in the reporting? Are we using a social sharing method that isn't giving us valid credit for these links? What should I consider doing differently & why isn't our likes, shares, tweets & Google+ being calculated into our score?

What's Happened To OSE's External Links For My Site?
Hi, I'm just taking my first steps with Open Site Explorer. I've hit a problem that I'd be really grateful for some help with. I'm running a website (that I didn't create) and want to get a clear picture of the inbound links. When I enter the URL into the OSE search bar, there are no external domains listed under the 'Inbound Links' and 'Linking Domains' tabs. Only internal site links are registered. Setting the filters, "only external" + "pages on this root domain", under the Inbound Links tab, does bring up a list of external sites. But I haven't had to enter filters just to see a list of inbound links with any other sites. Also, the breakdown under the Linking Domains tab remains the same - only links within my site are shown. Does this ring a bell? Any ideas what I might be doing wrong, or what might be wrong with my site to cause this problem? Cheers for helping, Josh

Old Incoming Links Redirected to new pages are not Being Factored on the Open Site Explorer
Hi, My website has been online since 1994. We have old links pointing to pages that no longer exist so what we have done is to create redirects to the specific page where the content is being displayed now. However, when we use the Open Site Explorer, the linking root domains do not show those sites that contain old links pointing to our domain. One good example of this one is: dmoz.org. Am I improperly handling the redirects? Or, what do I have to do so that old links that are being redirected to the new pages where the information is are accounted when calculating domain authority and trust? Thanks, Alex

Open Site Explorer CSV reports
Hello, Small question about the Open Site Explorer. on August 24th I've been trying to create several CSV reports which I knew would take a few days. But now, almost a week later when I check Open Site Explorer > Recent CVS reports it tells me it's still saving data. It's been saving data for 4 days now. Am I missing something, is this a bug, do I have to do something or should I wait a little longer? Thanks in advance, Dennis Tappij Gielen Retail&Clicks JFwMt.jpg

How accurate is Open Site Explorer?
I noticed for one of my sites, a large number of links do not show up in Open Site Explorer, including some of my stronger links. That being the case, how much weight can I put on using these tools to compare sites? I'm not trying to bash here, I really like the tools but if my PA is 29 and my competition is 34, how much weight can I put on these numbers? Or if it says my site has 50 links from 25 domains and my competition has 60 links from 30 domains, these numbers obviously aren't very accurate? So how much weight can I put on these comparisons? Are there better tools?

Bing ranking my non-www version of my site.
My site is ranking #1 on Bing for the non-www version of my homepage, but this is not showing in my ranking stats, since the site is setup in SEOMOZ as www version. Do I have to create a whole new campaign for the non-www version or is there a way to pickup these rankings?
