Duplicate Page Content
-
Hi there,
We keep getting duplicate page content issues. However, its not actually the same page.
E.G - There might be 5 pages in say a Media Release section of the website. And each URL says page 1, 2 etc etc. However, its still coming up as duplicate. How can this be fixed so Moz knows its actually different content? -
Thanks all - will give those options a try and see which works the best for us.

Hi!
I suggested the noindex in order to deindex pages that maybe are already indexed. But, yes, the rel="canonical" should be doing the same (the problem is that Google may not respect it).
The nofollow is order to not letting the crawler wasting budget crawl following the links of those (many) pages.

Gianluca,
Wouldn't be much more work to identify if the parameter is set and then add the noindex meta? Wouldn't be easier to just set the canonical? I'm sure that's a dynamic site, just one canonical cal without using any extra code (PHP or whatever).
Why the nofollow? If I just preventing that page for being indexed as it would constitute a duplicate content issue, why the nofollow?, noindex should be enough in this case.
We recently fixed a similar issue with our blog tags, showing duplicate content on about 400 pages. We fixed that by adding the noindex (they already had the canonical but it wasn't enough as the canonical couldn't point to a definite version as that changed if the tag had or not another post on it). Within a few days all those pages were deindexed, we noticed a loss in search traffic and I decided to run a small test removing the noindex tag. Results: 2 weeks later none of those pages returned to the index (I added the noindex tag back as it was just a test to see if we could regain that traffic, but ultimately decided it wouldn't help to have a duplicate content issue for that lost traffic).

Federico is right.
Your duplicated content issue is due to the date parameters, hence you are potentially duplicating every page having that calendar for all the possible combination of dates... and that is an huge issue.
You should implement the rel="canonical" in order to have all these kind of URLs having as canonical the URL without the parameter.
Or, even better, you should implement the meta robots "noindex, nofollow" in every date parametered URL.
Said that, the most logical thing to do was to block these URLs via robots.txt when launching the site. Unfortunately, now blocking these URLs is not enough, as they are already indexed (even if they not appear in the index because they are filtered out by Google).
-
Ah you mean that if the dates of the reservation changes then it creates a duplicate page content?
If that's the case, you should use the rel="canonical" the definite page, no dates selected, just the page that shows the property.
-
Did you try adding the rel="canonical" tag to the pages?
-
So they might look at this page: http://www.hihh.com.au/property-details?hihhpropertyId=HCP006&checkin=2013-08-06&checkout=2013-08-09&search=checkindate%3D2013-08-06%26checkoutdate%3D2013-08-09
Then the same page would come up on the error list but with different dates.
-
Can you provide us with some examples? It would make our job easier
-
Its basically all seperate pages/URL's with different information on each. However it seems to be crawled for each possible range of that page. e.g for check in/check out dates. It will search a range of dates and think that each page has different information. However, its all exactly the same.
-
Is the issue on the pagination? as sometimes some pages from categories/tags/etc can have the same content within an exact page.
If that's the issue, I would recommend you add a noindex meta to the least important pages (tags for example).
Hope that helps.

Static content pages ranking dropping all the time
Hello all. I have been working three months in my current job in the hotel industry. I have been publishing a lot of content to our website (mainly articles), which in general have been ranking well and really boosted our website traffic. The problem that I am facing, though, is the fact that our static pages' rankings are basically constantly dropping. Especially one of our main pages, which is this hotel page. I haven't been doing any real changes to the content, but the ranking (with keywords "hotelli helsinki" [Hotel in Helsinki in Finnish]) has plummeted from 13th position all the way down to 19th... What has been happening during these last three months is that we did change to a new domain and we have done all the redirections and also informed Google about this change through search console. I have also done some minor changes to the on-page content, such as changing the meta titles and descriptions as well as the page title and some of the text content to more natural ones instead of clumsy SEO texts and optimizing the images. This hasn't helped at all though and the rankings seem to steadily drop all the time. What would YOU do with this page? Maybe add more text content to the page to be more informative? All tips would be highly appreciated.

Content with changing URL and duplicate content
Hi everyone, I have a question regarding content (user reviews), that are changing URL all the time. We get a lot of reviews from users that have been dining at our partner restaurants, which get posted on our site under (new) “reviews”. My worry however is that the URL for these reviews is changing all the time. The reason for this is that they start on page 1, and then get pushed down to page 2, and so on when new reviews come in. http://www.r2n.dk/restaurant-anmeldelser I’m guessing that this could cause for serious indexing problems? I can see in google that some reviews are indexed multiple times with different URLs, and some are not indexed at all. We further more have the specific reviews under each restaurant profile. I’m not sure if this could be considered duplicate content? Maybe we should tell google not to index the “new reviews section” by using robots.txt. We don’t get much traffic on these URLs anyways, and all reviews are still under each restaurant-profile. Or maybe the canonical tag can be used? I look forward to your input. Cheers, Christian

Nice looking ecommerce menus with featured product categories - bad for SEO due to duplicate content?
My ecommerce website has menus which contain 'featured product sub-categories'. These are shown alongside the other product sub-category links. Each 'featured product category' includes a link, an image (with link) and some text. All menu content is visible to search engines. These menus look nice and probably encourage CTR (not tested!) but are they bad for SEO?

Mass Duplicate Content
Hi guys Now that the full crawl is complete I've found the following: http://www.trespass.co.uk/mens-onslow-02022 http://www.trespass.co.uk/mens-moora-01816 http://www.trespass.co.uk/site/writeReview?ProductID=1816 http://www.trespass.co.uk/site/writeReview?ProductID=2022 The first 2 duplicate content is easily fixed by writing better product descriptions for each product (a lot of hours needed) but still an easy fix. The last 2 are review pages for each product which are all the same except for the main h1 text. My thinking is to add no index and no follow to all of these review pages? The site will be changing to magento very soon and theres still a lot of work to do. If anyone has any other suggestions or can spot any other issues, its appreciated. Kind regards Robert

Notonthehighstreet.co.uk - duplicate content? a reason to not sell via 3rd parties
A mixture of questions and discussion Question 1. can the following two pages be considered duplicate content http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/gardenbeet/product/deer-head-wall-art http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/1/1/219933-deer-head-wall-art-by-garden-beet.html both pages are indexed and both pages have different meta - aimed at different search combinations Discussion The search for 'deer head wall art gardenbeet' is generated by my PR company - we have done loads of print advertising for this item yet the sheer mass and volume of noths.com stops my store http://www.gardenbeet.com/garden-wall-art/58-deer-head.html from obtaining the number one position. All is fair in the business world I suppose BUT the original marketing machine for noths.com was claiming that they were assisting the small business owner. I paid them over £600 to join and now they compete with me head on. Stupid me I suppose. Let this be a key learning for those toying with the idea of investing in their own SEO or a 3rd party selling platform. Ho hum
