Empty public profiles are viewed as duplicate content. What to do?
-
Hi!
I manage a social networking site. We have a lot of public user profiles that are viewed as duplicate content. This is because these users haven't filled out any public profile info and thus the profiles are "empty" (except for the name). Is this something I should worry about? If yes, what are my options to solve this?
Thanks!

This is totally down to a matter of personal preference. I'd be looking for something in the way of original text. A good way is to ask more question then total up the number of words in their answers. You can also flesh that out by introducing snippets from recent activity, connections etc. Do though try to include something in the way of original content in order to turn off the no-index.
I think your example isn't bad. Add a personal slogan, or line of introduction and it is probably enough.

Ok thanks! How can I determine the threshold for having profiles indexed? A common case is where a profile has a name, a company name and 1-3 links to other social profiles (twitter, linkedin etc..). Would a page like this be interesting enough to index? From a visitor's perspective I think it is; not necessarily for the content, but it has enough potential for click-through (to the company profile or to signup because the the visitor wants to connect with the owner of the profile).

That is quite easily dealt with. Set some minimum levels and add a meta noindex to those profiles that don't meet that standard.
If you combine that with encouragement to fill out profiles ("Your profile is only 10% complete. Add your education now for +3%" etc) then you can solve the duplicate issue and also the underlying cause. As they get completed they can start getting indexed again and you have a better website at the end of it.

How does Indeed.com make it to the top of every single search despite of having aggregated content or duplicate content
How does Indeed.com make it to the top of every single search despite of having duplicate content. I mean somewhere google says they will prefer original content & will give preference to them who have original content but this statement contradict when I see Indeed.com as they aggregate content from other sites but still rank higher than original content provider side. How does Indeed.com make it to the top of every single search despite of having aggregated content or duplicate content

Duplicate content, which seems not to be duplicate :S
After crawling I am used to getting a lot of duplicate content messages in Moz, which are High Priority. I do not know what to do with them, since I believe we tackled all the issues. Main point being the advise to put in a link rel=canonical. An example of a page that accordeing to the report has a duplicate. I do not see how. Can you help with that? http://www.beat-it.nl/4y6hctr24x7wdmr-ml350-p-ic-procaresvc.html duplicate sample http://www.beat-it.nl/modu-hp-a5800-acm-for-64-256-aps.html

Duplicate Content - Meta Data for International Site Roll Out
Hi All, We have a site targeting Ireland, so all on-page SEO is completed and launched on the Irish site. We are now rolling out this site to the UK...how much of this content & SEO meta data has to be changed for Google to not recognise it as duplicate content? Site structure is as follows: http://www.domain.com/ie-en/ - Irish site http://www.domain.com/uk-en/ - UK site Or will it even be considered duplicate content as we have the uk and Irish signals in the subfolders, will be using geo targeting on webmasters, and will have UK specific addresses and phone numbers? We will be rolling this site out to may more countries so would be great to get this straight from the start so we don't waste time creating many versions of the meta data unnecessarily! Many thanks Emma

Duplicate content on area specific sites
I have created some websites for my company Dor-2-Dor and there is a main website where all of the information across the board is on (www.dor2dor.com) but I also have area specific sites which are for our franchisees who run certain areas around the country (www.swansea.dor2dor.com or www.oxford.dor2dor.com) The problem is that the content that is on a lot of the pages is the same on all of them for instance our faq's page, special offers etc. What is the best way to get these pages to rank well and not have the duplicate content issues and be ranked down by search engines? Any help will be greatly received.

Archive of content
Hi there, I have recently joined a company to look after the e-marketing side of things, anyway the company I work for have been writing articles for a website that they own for over 2 years, probably about 200 or so unique articles on that website, however over the past year or so there has been no contribution to this site and was wondering if it would be worthwhile transferring these article over to our blog?, as this is where all the attention is in terms of marketing etc Kind Regards,
