Huge Dip in Traffic Last Week - New Algo Update?
-
Hi Mozzers,
We experienced a huge dip in traffic on Thursday, 8/14, across our entire site. It was not a specific set of pages, it was sitewide. Google Webmaster Tools notes our impressions are down as well. The traffic has not recovered. It appears our pages are still indexed in Google, just not ranking well.
Here are some questions I have to help isolate the cause:
- We recently completed a major redesign of our entire website on 7/26. We did not notice any dip in traffic after the new design launch - in fact, it actually increased a bit. Is it possible that only now Google sees our new site design and this is the reason for our dip? Is there a way to see Google's past cache dates?
- Did anyone else experience a similar dip in traffic since Thursday?
- Was there a recent Google update?
It would be much appreciated if someone takes a look at our site - www.consumerbase.com for any glaring SEO errors (missing necessary meta tags, etc.).
What steps do you guys suggest I take to isolate the cause in this dip in traffic?
Thanks!

There was a Panda update that happened on September 5th. For reference:

Hey There
Few recommendations;
-
Your robots.txt may be blocking CSS/JS - http://www.consumerbase.com/robots.txt which is now something Google recommends NOT blocking. See this article for backstory and about the fetch and render tool in webmaster tools.
-
How long has the homepage redirected to /index.html? Google does they they actually sort this out for you, and it doesn't quite cause the harm some people assume - but it can't hurt to use the normal domain for the homepage.
-
This one returns a 404 http://www.consumerbase.com/index.php
-
One troubling issue is that bad URLs don't return a 404, they 301 to the homepage: http://www.consumerbase.com/bad - I'd highly consider using a standard 404 not found response code with an error message.
-
This ALSO makes it impossible to run a proper crawl test on the site to check for bad pages. It's possible old pages are not being 301 redirected to the right new pages when they break, and you're losing traffic because Google won't pass value if the redirects don't match in content (more info here)
Did you change URLs with the redesign? It doesn't look like it, but just checking. You may want to export a list of trafficked pages prior to the migration from analytics, and run a crawl test on them. As said above, this is almost impossible to test properly right now because bad URLs 301, and aren't being picked up as 404s.
In terms of next steps. You have to get really granular. Segment, segment, segment - and isolate things until you find a "smoking gun" (which you don't always find, but you should look for).
The redesign date seems suspect - and your increase in traffic could have been in the lag time Google has from crawling and caching the updated site. It's just my hunch about the redesign - I'd look thoroughly everywhere.
-
-
To my knowledge this was just speculation by the author "reading between the lines" and there was no such update.
-
1. Google likes to see fresh new content, so the fact that you saw an increase in your ranking for a short period is not a huge surprise. Once they crawled all the pages, you saw the realistic position of your pages.
"Is there a way to see Google's past cache dates?"
You could try using this:
http://www.googleguide.com/cached_pages.html2. We moved down one spot. Doesn't look like it.
I think you are seeing movement due to an error in the sites documents, meaning redirects, sitemaps, etc. Check to make sure all items and old pages have been redirected and resubmitted.
-
There's a good chance that the issues you're experiencing are related to your redesign, but as an FYI there has been rumblings of a Penguin update over the past week or so. There's a bit more coverage over at SERoundtable, which might be worth taking a look at: https://www.seroundtable.com/google-penguin-three-19009.html

Gradual traffic drop of personal finance website in the last three months
Dear All, I have personal finance website https://mymoneysouq.com and the traffic dropped by less than half of what is was before last three months. I am figuring out all the possible issues and doing everything that comes to our mind to improve the quality of our website. I tried the following before posting here:1. Tried contacting website owner which we think spam and add all such domains to our disavow list2. We found little duplicate content on sites like Quora, we made those answers down by reporting to Quora3. Reported to DMCA on 3 articles articles(partial) from our website.4. We are trying improving user experience5. Removed one of our page that shared by many people but our page was not indexed by Google.6. Checked and modified content if any our articles are having more keywords than what SEO experts recommend. 7. We are working on researching more and figuring our what else can might have gone wrong with our traffic.8. Working on improving EAT I attached our traffic drop graph. I believe this drop is not natural it happened because of some issue at our end and we are not able to figure out the exact reasons.Surprisingly another site with not so high quality content started ranking now in the top.I am here to get community members/experts help on this. I could provide you if you need any further details. Thanks a lot for your time. We really appreciate any tips that you can share with us.Q2S1tlK Q2S1tlK

New Website SEO Implications
Hi Moz Community, A client of mine has launched a new website. The new website is well designed, mobile friendly, fast loading and offers a far better UX than the old site. It has similar content but 'less wordy'. The old website was tired, slow, not mobile responsive etc but still ranked well. The domain has marketing leading authority and link metrics. Since the launch, the rankings for virtually every word has plummeted. Even previously ranked #1 words have disappeared to page 3 or 4. New pages have different URLs (301s from the old urls are working fine) and still score the same 98% (using the Moz page optimiser tool). Is it usual to experience some short term pain, or are these rankings drop an indication that something else is missing? My theory is that the new URLs are being treated like new pages, and that those new pages don't have the engagement data which is used for ranking. Thus, despite having the same authority of the old pages, as far as user data is concerned, they are new pages and therefor, not ranking well - yet. That theory would make logical sense but I'm hoping some experts here can help. Any suggestions welcome. Here's a quick checklist of things I have already done: complete 301 redirect list

Natural Fluctuation in Search Traffic
This is going to sound like a weird question... I'm curious to know whether there is a natural fluctuation in the actual number of searches being made online each week. It would be great to relate this to the performance of my own organic traffic each week. For example, if organic search traffic is down 10% week on week, is that because search in general is down 10%? Has anybody ever looking into this?

Domain Migration of high traffic site:
We plan to perform a domain migration in 6 months time.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lcourse
I read the different articles on moz relating to domain migration, but some doubts remain: Moving some linkworthy content upfront to new domain was generally recommended. I have such content (free e-learning) that I could move already now to new domain.
Should I move it now or just 2 months before migration?
Should I be concerned whether this content and early links could indicate to google a different topical theme of the new domain ? E.g. in our case free elearning app vs a commercial booking of presential courses of my core site which is somehow but not extremely strongly related) and links for elearning app may be very specific from appstores and from sites about mobile apps. we still have some annoying .php3 file extensions in many of our highest traffic pages and I would like to drop the file-extension (no further URL change). It was generally recommended to minimize other changes at the same time of domain migration, but on the other hand implementing later another 301 again may also not be optimum and it would save time to do it all at the same time. Shall I do the removal of the file extension at the same time of the domain migration or rather schedule it for 3 months later? On the same topic, would the domain migration be a good occasion to move to https instead of http at the same time, or also should we rather do this at a different time? Any thoughts or suggestions?0 -
How to move website to new domain?
We have a website that has run under the same domain name for the past 10 years. We have built up a decent amount of SEO "mojo" (and traffic) over time, however, the original domain name no longer applies to the business model. A little over 1 year ago we started using a new brand name for the website and created a landing page for that domain name. Everything on that landing page links over to pages on the original domain name (to preserve the SEO value that we have built up over the years). We would like to move all (or most) of the pages/content to the new domain name. Would using 301 redirects be the safest, most effective way of doing this? I have heard of other people doing it this way, and often they will see their traffic drop for a few weeks before it eventually comes back. Anyone else had experience with this? What worked? What didn't? Thanks!
