SEO best practice : HTTP to HTTPS
-
What's the best practice to switch from an all HTTP site to an all HTTPS site ?
No changes to the site structure, just a full site switch to SSL.
Right now, the site is reachable with HTTP and with HTTPS.http://crocodesign.be --> https://crocodesign.be
http://www.crocodesign.be --> https://crocodesign.be
https://www.crocodesign.be --> https://crocodesign.beCMS : Wordpress 3.9
Server type : Apache
Preferred method : .htaccess -
I wonder why Google's PhD engineers didn't post detailed info about this?.... But, I can probably understand it better from the Moz blog.
They also should have warned people that it would tank their adsense earnings.

We'll also be posting more info about this on the Moz blog later this month.

Oh ok...
This line ensures its a 301:
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%1/$1 [R=301,L]
-
@Rafi : I want to explicity state in the .htaccess rule that a 301 must be used.
-
You can use any of the HTTP header checkers available online for the purpose or a desktop tool like Screaming Frog SEO Spider can also give you the HTTP header status codes for any URL.
Best regards,
Devanur Rafi

Thank you for your reply @TomRoberts
How can I make sure it's a 301 permanent redirect ? -
The above redirect structure you've proposed would work great. You're ensuring only one homepage version exists, making it the canonical, and all variations (which may also have previous links going to them and SEO value) are being redirected to pass on to the canonical version.
You can use your .htaccess file to force http to https by adding the following code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^.*$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L]The first line turns on redirection capabilities. The second line checks to make sure the connection is not already https. The third rule will redirect users from their original location, to the same location but using HTTPS.
And also, in case you want to know how to make sure that the www. version of your site redirects to the non-www version, the code would be:
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.(.)$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.)$ https://%1/$1 [R=301,L]Hope this helps

Best Nofollow Practice Facing +500 instances of affiliate links
Hi. I have a set of affiliate links on my website. That's 50 unique links in total. They are placed in a separate folder /go/, and are all nofollowed. My website has 100 pages. When doing a site audit I get a report with 50 affiliate links pr. page x100. That's a huge report. Is this really necessary? I can ofc. choose to ignore the automated reports, but I can't help but to think that there must be an easier way to keep track of it? Like, if Link 1-50 is located in /go/, they should automatically be nofollowed, regardless of where they are located on the root/sub domain. Bonus question: The format of the link is https://exampledomain.com/go/brandname I am wondering if I should add that "/" at the end of it. If yes, why? If no, why?

Https to http
Two versions of the same page are being served at the moment. Certain pages on the site redirect to the https version whilst others don't. I am being flagged for duplicate content because of this. Is this a simple fix? As in just redirect all to the https version and set the preferred version in WMT?

Best practices when merging 2 domains with different themes and CMS's?
I have a client with 2 sites - one for an external audience and one for their ~2,000-3,000 employees. The external site (call it acme.com), built on WP with a custom theme, is pretty small. The internal site (call it acmeinternal.com) has TONS of high quality content with incredible engagement metrics, but it's built on a separate CMS with an entirely different custom theme. The problem we're trying to solve now: Can we bring the internal site over to the external domain (acme.com and acme.com/internal, for example) so that client.com can benefit from the quantity and quality of content and behavioral metrics associated with the internal content? The external and internal audiences, and the corresponding content for each, are both entirely mutually exclusive. A potential client of theirs who would come to acme.com would have no reason to visit acme.com/internal (we'd actually prefer to not provide navigation to it for them), and the internal audience would treat acme.com/internal as their landing page, and all the posts would then live at acme.com/internal/news/post-name. I'm assuming there are reasons why we couldn't have half of the site on one template using one CMS, having certain SEO tags, certain HTML structure, etc where the other half of the site is using a completely different template with a different CMS with different SEO tags, different URL structure etc? To reap the reward of the great content, would we have to essentially recreate the internal site's content on the external site's cms and template? Is it even possible for the domain authority of acme.com to improve based on the engagement on acme.com/internal/_xxxx _if there's virtually zero linking back and forth between acme.com and /internal/? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Schema.org : reviewCount & ratingValue - best practices for implementation?
I'd like to add our merchant review count and rating to our site and use the schema.org markup to indicate to the search engines what these are. The reason I'd like to do this is so that the star rating pulls through to the organic listing. Check out this example from several UK tight sites. Notice how the organic listings display the star rating... My questions are: Has anyone seen an example of this from Google.com (US site) I heard that you should only add this markup to the homepape - but couldn't find any Google documentation to back this up. Do you know if this can be applied throughout the site w/o penalty? Thanks everyone!

What is the best website structure for SEO?
I've been on SEOmoz for about 1 month now and everyone says that depending on the type of business you should build up your website structure for SEO as 1st step. I have a new client click here ( www version doesn't work)... some bugs we are fixing it now. We are almost finished with the design & layout. 2nd question have been running though my head. 1. What would the best url category for the shop be /products/ - current url cat ex: /products/door-handles.html 2. What would you use for the main menu as section for getting the most out of SEO. Personally i am thinking of making 2-3 main categories on the left a section where i can add content to it (3-4 paragraphs... images maybe a video).So the main page focuses on the domain name more and the rest of the sections would focus on specific keywords, this why I avoid cannibalization. Main keyword target is "door handles" Any suggestions would be appreciated.
