Homepage on page 2 for site:domain
-
Hi all,
today I noticed that our homepage is located on page 2 if you do the site:domain query. As far as I know, the site:domain results mirror the importance in the eyes of Google. Some time ago, our homepage was the first result.
I have to say that we do not often have changing elements or new content on the homepage, it is more like a static page. But still the most linked to page on the domain...
What conclusion can I come to? Is our homepage of lower importance to Google than some time ago? Is it a problem for SEO? As we backed down our advertisments, the traffic from branded keywords fell the last months - could this be an explanation?
And, most important: do I have to worry? (Besides, the SEO-traffic is fine and growing..)

Hi Ritoban,
thanks for the answer. I always do the site-query without spaces and there is also no difference in putting the ww. in front - still on page 2.
We noticed that we fell from 1st place to 3rd for our brand name - the problem is that we have the same name as a Microsoft product (access) - so Wikipedia ranks on 2nd, a new domain with the brand in its domain name is new on 1st, Microsoft on 4th place.
We have a lot of respected links from universities etc.. with our brand name as anchor and we were always number one for the brand since I work there (nearly 10 months).
As I wrote above, in the last months we lost a lot of branded traffic, mostly because we did a lot of print advertisements which we had to cancel. Compared to 2011, we lost 1/3rd of brand traffic [(not provided already included)].
Do you think that because of the declining brand traffic (CTR and time on site are stable) Google put us down/others up? Because they think we are no longer as relevant for our brand name as before???
(Note on the side: our SEO-traffic is fine and constantly climbing - only the brand searches are on decline since months)
Thanxss

As long as your homepage does not get impacted for your branded query, its not a major point. The stopping of advertisements also does not seem to be a factor in this.
Question. Is the query you're putting in google: site:yourdomain.tld or site: yourdomain.tld
Because they show different results (note the space in between). Also, putting in 'www' may impact the search results.
Mostly don't worry about it for now. If it stays the same for another week or so, then we need to figure out a solution. But my gut says it will come back to first position in a few days.

PPC ads: landing page vs website page ... other metrics to consider?
I run 3 PPC ads in Chinese language on Baidu, of which one landing page consistently ranks around 5th amongst 80+ other English website pages. So, when our site was recently developed for Chinese language, I redirected the ads to the relevant Chinese website pages for a month to see which would attract more visitors (Chinese landing pages vs Chinese website). I haven't fully analysed the results yet, but what other metrics should I consider than just the volume of visitors? Landing page

Page Tracking using Custom URLs - is this viable?
Hi Moz community! I’ll try to make this question as easy to understand as possible, but please excuse me if it isn’t clear. Just joined a new team a few months ago and found out that on some of our most popular pages we use “custom URLs” to track page metrics within Google Analytics. NOTE: I say “custom URLs” because that is the best way for me to describe them. As an example: This page exists to our users: http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/Ram_HD/2012/photos-interior/ But this is the URL we have coded on the page: cars-trucks/used-cars/reviews/2012-Ram-HD/photos-interior/ (within the custom variance script labeled as “var l_tracker=” ) It is this custom URL that we use within GA to look up metrics about this page. This is just one example of many across our site setup to do the same thing Here is a second example: Available page to user: http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/Cadillac_ATS/2015/ Custom “var l_tracker=” /cars-trucks/2015-Cadillac-ATS/overview/ NOTE: There is a small amount of fear that the above method was implemented years ago as a work-around to a poorly structured URL architecture. Not validated, but that is a question that arose. Main Questions: Is the above implementation a normal and often used method to track pages in GA? (coming from an Omniture company before – this would not be how we handled page level tracking) Team members at my current company are divided on this method. Some believe this is not a proper implementation and are concerned that trying to hide these from Google will raise red flags (i.e. fake URLs in general = bad) I cannot find any reference to this method anywhere on the InterWebs - If method is not normal: Any recommendations on a solution to address this? Potential Problems? GA is currently cataloguing these tracking URLs in the Crawl Error report. Any concerns about this? The team wants to hide the URLs in the Robots.txt file, but some team members are concerned this may raise a red flag with Google and hurt us more than help us. Thank you in advance for any insight and/or advice. Chris

GA: How do I preserve custom dimension across domain and subdomain?
Using custom dimensions our site tracks logged-in vs not logged-in users on our shop site (shop.example.com). A user can only login on the shop.example.com. The problem is when the logged in user visits our the main domain (example.com), we lose the custom dimension and the user becomes anonymous. At this point, if the user goes back to shop.example.com, the logged-in custom dimension comes back. How do I preserve the logged-in user dimension across the main domain? Example of snippet:

Webmaster Tools, why does it show 486 pages submitted to web, and only 40 indexed?
I am confused on what a client account shows in WMTs, client account is http://multiview.com. They have a graph showing 486 pages submitted to web, but only 40 are indexed. Also, they recently re-launched, i.e in April 2014, and the new site has about 40 pages indexed.... so I am guessing that the 486 number relates to all the pages that are showing errors in retrieving...i.e. 28 soft 404 errors, 10 access denied errors, 808 not found errors. Does this make sense to explain why there is such a gap between 486 and 40?

Google analytics - landing pages
Hello, I have a website and it contains landing pages. after tracking and analyzing the data in Google Analytics , I found out that the traffic for the whole site is affected by the visits to the landing page. I mean, the bounce rate is less than one minute. this is because users fill their details in the landing pages and leave my website. to improve my website, I need clear data about the traffic, bounce rate etc. in my website. I also need can you help me solve this problem I thought about create another account in Google Analytics and set it to my websites pages (not including the landing pages). and keep the current code for the landing pages. my question is regarding this: Is it legal to use 2 different GA code (each one of them belong to different account) in the same domain ? can you provide me with more information about Multi Account in Google Analytics, and how can I use it to divide the traffic in my website between the traffic and the data for the landing pages and for the website itself ?

How to find out which URLs are NOT indexed on a site
Is there a way to easily find out which URLs on a store-type site are NOT being indexed in Google? For example, if my sitemap information in Google Webmaster tools shows I have 7342 URLs in my sitemap and 5699 of those indexed, how do I find out what the 1643 non-indexed URLS are? Thanks for any help!

Should I delete a page that gets search traffic, that I don't care about?
I have a page on my site that consistently gets traffic, every month. Googlers seems to love it. But I don't like it at all. Webmaster tools shows that google allows us a certain number of search impressions each day. - it flatlines, they are limiting the impressions we get. We also getthe same number of clickthroughs each day. So my question is for anyone who has this same experience, who may have experimented by deleting a page you don't care about. Did you just lose that number of clicks each day or did other pages on your site get displayed and clicked through instead?
