Ecommerce category navigation structure -best practices

Hello,
I've heard that there is a specific strategy for the best linkjuice distribution for categorizing an ecommerce site.
How many links should there be on the home pages? Categories 1 deep? 2 deep?
This client's customers don't like to go very deep, and they usually don't find our second page

So in this approach, you're adding additional links rather than limiting the amount of navigational links that are allowed to be followed from the homepage.
I'm one to believe that structure should be based less on link-juice goals and more on what will provide value to the user.You can use a variety of tricks to modify the flow of linkjuice, but I don't know of any tricks that modify the logic people use to find what they're looking for.

Your question can be broken into 3 parts (category depth and linkjuice distribution being closely related):
1. Max links on homepage (or any page for that matter)
It used to be said to keep it under some magical threshold (60, 80, 100, etc.), but I have researched this topic extensively and there are many people who believe the number of links is not important so long as your navigation makes sense. Since 'mega-menu' madness set in a couple years ago, I struggle to see how having 200 links on your homepage can do anything other than dilute the linkjuice and domain specificity. The idea of there being a penalty or that the bottom 'x' links are not crawled doesn't carry much weight these days.
2. Linkjuice distribution strategy
I break my strategies into 2 major approaches with the difference being the method for accomplishing link distribution.
The first approach being large sites with hundreds of categories. In this case, it is better to organize logically and then use robots.txt to control (limit) the amount of internal links pointing to your less important category pages. There are many ways to do this and I'll give you an example of one way to 'automate' it. One mega menu could be used on the homepage that points to your important categories, blocking crawling for the others. A copy of this menu that allows all links to be followed can be used on second and third level categories, so the less important categories can be indexed, yet not carry the weight of a link from the homepage. This is a over-simplified example, but you should be able to extrapolate the gist here.

3. Category depth
You've already done your research.. users don't like to click through. However, this is the natural state of humanity, so I'd focus less on how deep you ago and concentrate on the 'user experience', where your content has more sensible categorization and more relevant connections between products-categories. Do you want to be forced into click 7 times to reach the product you're looking for? (of course not) So, why not make navigating to the 'deeper' products more accessible via technology (menus, parametric filters, etc) or content grouping?

Ecommerce Canonical Question
Hi all, first question (eek) Could I pick the brains of fellow users around an issue we are having with canonical urls on a magento website. At the moment we do not have these enabled as it seems to break our indexing. Cut a long story short, we have thousands of products but haven't rewritten many of the descriptions from the manufacturers yet and so have noindexed all the product pages (freeing them as we go). If we enable the canonical option on our magento plugin it will stop us from being able to target these terms. Whereas the filtering option would create domain.com/dress/green/maxi/lace with the page title of Green Lace Maxi Dress, if we enable the canonical part of the seo plugin the canonical link which would be added to the page would be - instantly removing our ability to rank for longer tail dress related searches (we are not going to compete with the big players on the premium terms, yet!). There are alternative plugins we can buy for magento to add the correct tag, however, if every page's canonical just points back it itself like this, is there really much point spending nearly $1000 on the 4 licences we would need to cover our range of sites. Is it really necessary, in this case, that we have a canonical for the product filtering? Sorry for the long post, hope it made sense. Thanks for any assistance.

URL structure
Hello all, I am about to sort out my websites link structure, and was wondering which approach to our services page would be best. should we have: services/digital-marketing & services/website-design etc or: digital-marketing/website-design & digital-marketing/seo Basically I see digital marketing as the top level category that is the umbrella term for all of our digital services. But would it make more sense to have service to be the main category and digital marketing within that (along with all the other services from web design to seo)? all thoughts welcome!

ECommerce & Reviews when generated by 3rd Party uses Javascript
Hi all, I am trying to optimize our product pages and I know one of the important factors is showing customer reviews. While we have plenty of reviews to show they are collected by a third party (Shopper Approved) and the way we have been told to display them on our pages is via a Javascript. My question is, is this sufficient for search engines to be able to crawl and interpret the Javascript or are we missing out on user generated content since it is displayed via Javascript. If so are there best practices or recommendations to help us? Thank you!

Duplicate Content from WordPress Category Base?
I recently changed my category base in WordPress and instead of redirecting or deleting the old base, WordPress kept the content up. So I now have duplicate content on two different urls - one on the old category base, one on the new category base. How should I handle this situation? The site is only a couple weeks old, if that makes any difference.

Site structure question
I'm currently working on a very awkward custom-WP setup, in which I can't maintain the present drop-down navigation menu without having those pages under a parent or without completely recoding everything. I have two requirements, for SEO purposes I'm looking for the following structure for each targeted landing page: www.example.com/landing-page as opposed to www.example.com/sub/landing-page Of course, having my landing pages as a child, I get the latter of the two. For navigational purposes they need to fall under a specific category in a drop-down menu. With any other theme or setup this is an easy fix, but not here. What I have now is that the landing pages are currently placed under a parent category page. But, they have custom permalinks. The permalinks are setup as follows www.example.com/landing-page But, technically the exact structure is still www.example.com/sub/landing-page which then redirects to the custom permalink. So, my question is - in an attempt to get my most important landing pages close to the root for better PR and crawlability, do I still get the same benefit with my current setup? Is this structure I have, better, worse, or indifferent? Thanks.

Optimizing E-Commerce Category Pages For SEO
Hey, Does anyone have any tips for optimizing e-commerce category pages? Looking to add content to each category page but not sure where to put the content i.e. above the footer? Above the search results? In the left hand nav bar? Have a landing page which they click through to see search results?
