Need Help - Lost 75% Of Traffic Since May 2018
-
Sorry to go in-depth here, but want to give all available information.
We went live late April 2018 with our two websites in Shopify (moved from Magento, same admin, different storeviews...which we find later to cause some issues). Both of these websites sell close to the same products (we purchased a competitor about 5 years ago, which is why we have two). The nice thing is that they do almost identical amounts in sales. They have done very well for years, especially in the last two years.
Well, the core algo update around May 22nd-24th 2018 happened and wiped out about 65% of our Google traffic for one website (MySupplementStore.com). And this latest update, wiped out another 20%. I couldn't figure out why this would have happened, because we were very cautious about keeping things separate, unique descriptions etc. So I did some digging and this is what I found:
- The reviews we migrated over from Magento somehow were combined and added to both websites. This is something I didn't notice. I had this resolved a month ago so that each site's reviews are now only on that website.
- Our blog section was duplicated across both websites during the migration. Again, something I didn't notice, as we have close to over 1,000 blog posts per site. This was resolved two weeks ago.
- As I was looking more, I found that the last 6 months, a person working for us (for 3 years), started writing descriptions and pasting them on both websites, instead of making them unique to each website. I trusted her for years, but I think she just got lazy. She quit about a month before the migration as well. We are currently working on this, but its been taking awhile because we have over 5,000 products on each site and have no idea which ones are duplicates.
I did also notice:
- Site very slow when checking site speed tools. Working on that this week.
- When I take snippets of text or do searches, many times it shows up in omitted results.
- No messages in Google Webmaster Tools
So the question is...
- Do you think it is the duplicate content issues that caused the drop? Our other site is Best Price Nutrition, which didn't see a big drop at all during that update. If not, any other ideas why?
-
Hi Tyler - Thanks for the response. I definitely know what you are saying. When we purchased this competitor, it was many different products (over 10 years ago) and gradually we added our products. This site normally does a couple million US each year, which is why redirecting it wasn't even something we thought about, and don't want to think about...and for almost 10 years everything was fine.
I focused on unique descriptions, we had unique reviews and unique QA, all user generated...different for each of the two sites. But as I mentioned above, some issues happened during our migration, and with a former employee.
I want to get it back to where it was, which I believe is possible. I guess I am wanting to see if anyone sees any other potential issues too.

Hey Jeff,
Just out of curiosity, why haven't you redirected one site to the other? Why have two sites in the first place? If these stores sell close to the same products, there is no sense in maintaining both of them. It just opens you up to issues like the ones you've described. You're literally competing with yourself for rankings on two different sites when you could most likely rank better with one site. Seeing as you've lost 75% of traffic, this seems like the perfect time to do that.
There are just so many benefits in terms of SEO and even resources. You're likely splitting your time in half trying to get each of these sites to rank which means all projects take twice as long as they should. Additionally, think of it in terms of domain authority/page authority. You have links split up to both sites right now, one might have more links for one category page than the other and that one might have more links to another category page than the other one. If you combine these sites and 301 redirect all the URLs from one site to the other, you'll combine the value of all of those links.
You can run yourself ragged trying to figure out what happened in a "broad core algorithm update" but the truth is, you'll never know. Your best bet is asking yourself what the risks are to having two sites to manage and, conversely, what are the benefits? Is it best to try and restore rankings to one site while neglecting the other or are you better off just combining your efforts?
In regards to the things you mentioned: Yes, the duplicate meta titles and descriptions could hurt you. They might make you look like you're scraping the other site which is something Google tries to penalize algorithmically. I would measure the results of those changes closely for the next couple months.
I'd also do a deep dive on page speed as Google made mobile page speed a ranking factor beginning on July 9th.
Hope this helps.

Do I need multiple 301s to preserve SEO
Many years ago I created website www.original.com. Two years ago I redirected website www.original to www.neworiginal.comusing 301 redirects. I have now created www.rebranded.com. I want to maintain all SEO value. Should I redirect both www.original.comand www.new original.com to www.rebranded.com? Or do I only need to redirect one of them and if only one which one? If I need only to redirect one can I delete the other, why or why not. Of course the url are fictitious. I truly appreciate your help

Spike then Drop in Direct Traffic?
We've been doing some SEO work over the last few weeks and earlier this week we saw a large spike in traffic. Yay we all thought, but then yesterday the traffic levels returned to pre-celebratory levels. I've been doing some digging to try and find out what was different Monday and Tuesday this week. Mondays are usually big traffic days for us anyway, but this week was by far the biggest, and Tuesday was even higher still, our best day ever. After some poking, I found that the direct traffic followed the same pattern as our overall traffic levels (image attached). The first spike coincides with an email we sent out that day, but the later spike we just don't know where it came from? I understand loosely that direct isn't easily traceable, but can anyone help us understand more about this second spike? Thanks! ayqL2wi

Help with https// redirects
Hey there
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Jay328
I have a client who just moved from a self hosted CMS to Adobe Catalyst (don't ask!)
The problem: Their url indexed with google is https://domain.com, Adobe Catalyst does not support third party SSL certificates or https domains. Now when people google them https://domain.com shows up in search, HOWEVER it does not have a trusted certificate and a pop up window blocks the site. They are a mortgage company so SSL is really not needed. What can I do to get google to recognize the site at http: vs. https? Would this be something in GWMT? Thanks!0 -
Lost Links in Google Webmaster Tools
Last week I had over 1800 backlinks showing up in GWT. 4 days ago I had 20, and now I have 5. I have a very diverse link profile ranging from social bookmarks to YouTube, to Business Listings (Yelp, etc), and they're all gone. Clearly there is not a particular segment of my links that are being targeted here, they've all been completely wiped out. My rankings have fallen, and where I was on page 1/2 for all my targeted KWs, I'm now on Page 3, 4, and 5. There are no penalties showing up in GWT, so I'm completely at a loss as to what is going on. Please help! Website is: http://brownboxbranding.com

Big 301 Redirect Help!
Hey guys I need a little help with setting up a big 301. Background: It's a bit of a mess as the old site is a total mess after being online for 10 years plus. It has html and php pages, and a mod rewrite to redirect old html links to the newer php version of those pages. It's now moving to a new site and as the domain name and URL structure has changed we can't use any fancy regex and have to do a page to page redirect. There are 1500 pages to redirect. However, the old site has thousands of linking root domains, and some of these are to the old html pages (which currently redirect to the php pages) and some to the newer php pages. Question: My initial plan was to leave the mod rewrite and only redirect the php pages. That means 1500 individual redirects instead of 3000 if I individually redirect both the php and html pages. I'm not sure what's best to be honest. We don't really want multiple hops in the redirect (html>php>new site), but surely 1500 redirects is better than 3000! Does anyone have any advice on which option may be best, or even a better option? Thanks 🙂

Duplicate Page Content / Titles Help
Hi guys, My SEOmoz crawl diagnostics throw up thousands of Dup Page Content / Title errors which are mostly from the forum attached to my website. In-particular it's the forum user's profiles that are causing the issue, below is a sample of the URLs that are being penalised: http://www.mywebsite.com/subfolder/myforum/pop_profile.asp?mode=display&id=1308 I thought that by adding - http://www.mywebsite.com/subfolder/myforum/pop_profile.asp to my robots.txt file under 'Ignore' would cause the bots to overlook the thousands of profile pages but the latest SEOmoz crawl still picks them up. My question is, how can I get the bots to ignore these profile pages (they don't contain any useful content) and how much will this be affecting my rankings (bearing in mind I have thousands of errors for dup content and dup page titles). Thanks guys Gareth

How to increase the traffic ?
Hi Everyone, I am a bit a newbie in SEO and I read different articles and comments regarding the SEO but I am a bit stuck to get traffic through www.organicur.com. It's a really new website build through Prestashop (1-2 month). I used the tool keyword analysis to look after keywords not to competitive. I used the on-page optimization of Seomoz until to have A for every pages and I have started to build backlinks. But the traffic doesn't improve at all. Does that mean my keywords are not relevant enough ? Do I need to wait and carry on the links building. Do I need to go through PPC ? Thanks a lot for your reply, K
