Best Way to Replace Lost Links
-
We found a particular client that was using a 3rd party backlinker to build links (they were outsourced). The backlinks appeared to be low quality, just basic text and no substantial content surrounding it, usually like a forum profile. The backlinker was swapped out.
However, we've been suffering from a big loss of links. We anticipated that quite a few of the links the previous crew were managing would be lost, however, we've lost over 1500. Some of that is due to the former SEO company using sitesays.com as part of their strategy.
That site has since removed all listings/links because they were hit by recent algorithm changes. Every week GWT has fewer and fewer links coming from that site. We expect this to continue until GWT has removed all links from that site. We are also losing ground (quickly) on local rankings too. We believe this is due to the high number of links lost.
What is best practice when building links to counter this issue? Is there anything that can be done to stem the link purge and, if possible, gain ground on rankings again?

That #RCS talk was awesome! Thanks a bunch for that recommendation. We've really worked hard on this with the client and they are fully on board with RCS - the CEO built the company on it. Very interestingly, I had not considered the brand consolidation strategy (asking for a link back from lifted website content). We are definitely excited about using that as a new outlet for link building, allowing others to do the work for us organically.

I have to agree with @CleverPhD. The lower quality links will do more harm than good for your site in light of new algro updates. Instead of trying to build a rapid 1300 links, look to build fewer but HIGH QUALITY links back to your site. Personally, I see that social networks seem to be carrying a lot of weight so perhaps creation of a graphic and sharing it across your social media networks will provide more worth.

One thing you need to consider is not just the quantity of the links you lost but the quality. If you are losing thousands of links with a PA of 1 and DA of 0, well then good riddance! They were not helping you to start with and if anything they were hurting you.
So, I would not think, "Well, we lost 1345 links and so we need 1345 links back". I would say, how can we help the client to do some #RCS to earn some quality links.

Https lock broken possibly due to absolute http header footer image links.
To make the https lock secure, can I make my website header and footer image URLs to relative? I have read that we need to have absolute URLs for images for good SEO. In our old ecommerce platform we made http image urls for http pages and https image urls for https pages. For our new platform this is not a standard feature and we will have to pay for customizations which we don't have any more budget for that. So will making image URLs relative create any other problems?

http://cdn.onedirection.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/harry-styles-tongue5.jpg Frequently we get a lot of other websites using our images, which we're fine with, but I would like to know if we get any SEO value from these image links? Interestingly they do appear in the "Just Discovered" section of OSE. Cheers, Chris.0 -
Does having a link in a clear advertising area diminish the value?
We were pleasantly surprised when a new skateboarding magazine/blog popped up recently. We have a good working relationship with the guys who run the site and they dropped our logo and a link to our site on the home page of their blog. As a national skateboarding retailer, this is the kind of site we would naturally show up on with link, logo, content, etc. So we feel we gained a highly relevant, potentially valuable link. One question came up, however: by being linked to in an area that's clearly designated for advertisers, is our potential link value diminished? See the site and our placement here (rt column, Tactics logo):http://www.curbcutmag.com/ Curious what some of you think.

Local SEO: Links with the citations so should I slow down?
Hello, There seems to be some nofollow and dofollow links building as I add structured citations. Is this a reason to slow down the building citation process if you want the links to count? Do they help organic SEO?

Footer links vs Homepage Content
We are redesigning this site http://www.crystalshop.co.uk/ but not reinstating the ecommerce yet so the primary aim of the site is to increase foot traffic in the shops. The list of shops on the RHS of the homepage is really messy but is useful. I would like to move these to the footer... is this a bad idea? If this is, is it a bit of a gamble to move it to the bottom of the homepage rather than higher up as it is? We are already featuring a link to the shop finder page but I want to get the locations in as prominent place as possible but it's quite a long list!

What is the best way to internally link via images?
What is the best way to internally link via images? I have a website about shoes with all different brands. Let's say I'm trying to rank for "ABC sandals", and on the ABC page I have a "related brands" section with 4 logos of related sandal brands, linking to their respective page. Currently the alt text of the logos is "XYZ Logo" with the link title text "XYZ." Would it be beneficial to have change either the image alt text, or the link title text, or both to "XYZ sandals"?

How do you get links from a photo pointing to a third party site in Google Places?
How do you get links from a photo pointing to a third party site. I’ve seen a number on other Places accounts but I can't figure out how to do it. They had a picture/logo and the url underneath it (instead of it saying 'from the owner' underneath it), when you clicked the photo it took you to the website instead of just a page with only that photo on it. Please see image as an example. I've highlighted the image links below. Thanks in advance for your help 🙂 i0HxK.jpg
