Spam Links? -115 Domains Sharing the Same IP Address, to Remove or Not Remove Links
-
Out of 250 domains that link to my site about 115 are from low quality directories that are published by the same company and hosted on the same ip address.
Examples of these directories are:
-www.keydirectory.net -www.linkwind.com -www.sitepassage.com
-www.ubdaily.com -www.linkyard.org
A recent site audit from a reputable SEO firm identified 125 toxic links. I assume these are those toxic links. They also identified about another 80 suspicious domains linking to my site. They audit concluded that my site is suffering a partial Penguin penalty due to low quality links.
My question is whether it is safe to remove these 125 links from the low quality directories. I am concerned that removing this quantity of links all at once will cause a drop in ranking because the link profile will be thin with only about 125 domains remaining that point to the site. Granted those 125 domains should be of somewhat better quality.
I am playing with fire by having these removed. I URGENTLY NEED ADVICE AS THE WEBMASTER HAS INITIATED STEPS TO REMOVE THE 125 LINKS.
Thanks everyone!!!

Hi Alan,
Can you give us an update on how things are going? Do you have any more questions? Have you seen any changes recently?
-
I would definitely remove them. They're probably a factor in the Penguin algorithm. If for some reason Penguin hasn't picked up on these links then it probably will in the future as Google is constantly evolving the Penguin algorithm.
If your site is truly affected by Penguin then you're going to need to be really thorough with your disavowing and removing. Removing just some of the links is not likely to make a huge difference. The only sites that I have seen recover are ones that have removed and/or disavowed close to 100% of their unnatural links AND also have a good base of natural links.

Hey Alan,
I didn't realize how deep you had gone in your research already! I definitely agree with removing them now that I understand how you found all of this.
I've seen a lot of people blame penguin and other google anti-blackhat methods for their lack of traffic but few have actual proof the way you do. And its funny you mention blogging at the end. I was just going to ask about your content and its freshness, etc. I used to have a blog with a TON of content but some of it was poorly written. I'm not the best at grammar apparently.. so I removed a bunch of articles I thought were a waste of time for anybody reading them.. bigmistake! I lost almost half my traffic.
Best of luck,

Hi Nick:
Thanks for your perspective.
Our website traffic (my company is a commercial real estate brokerage firm in New York City) dropped 60% after the first Penguin update in April of 2012. It recovered somewhat last October after the latest Penguin update after we eliminated repetitive, spammy footer links. The site was also redesigned last Summer.
The quality of the links was only reviewed last November by a SEO firm and a formal audit. The links were analyzed by Link Detox. About 55% are toxic. 40% suspicious and 5% OK. I have no stomach to risk my business with this terrible link profile. But I am trying to take a middle of the road approach. First step being to remove links from 113 domains deemed toxic by Link Detox. These domains all originate on the same IP address so they are mostly a link farm. The owner of the directories has agreed to remove them.
That will still leave me with some toxic links, suspicious link and a few good ones. So I am immediately going to hire an SEO firm for six months to build high quality links (monitoring their deliverables each month). Only in a few months after we have obtained some high quality links will I start working on removing the other toxic and suspicious links. The objective will be to try to radically improve the link profile within a year.
I am also going to be adding blog content on a weekly basis and increase activity on social media to counter what I am realizing is an absolutely awful link profile.
In the last two years I spent more than $35,000 on web marketing and coding and ignored the link profile. BIG MISTAKE!!!

Hi Alan,
You Should Delete all of these bad/low Quality backlinks. It will not effect your website but will help in Long term.
Also, did your Website Rankings Dropped ? If so then You have to delete all bad backlinks and Change Anchor text of the Good backlinks to something more Generic.
If your Website is Ranking well then how Can anyone tell that it has been hit by penguin ? Penguin effected website have lost their Rankings.
hope it helps.

Hi Alan,
Do you have any evidence that you are under any sort of penalty? I agree with Morgan that these directories are playing with fire and could definitely burn you BUT I also know first hand my biggest competitor uses these directory sites for the majority of their back-links and they outrank me on most keywords I target. If you feel like living dangerously don't mess with them but don't add more. If you want to be 100% clean and straight edge than have them removed but it may hurt you. This is sort of a damned if you do and damned if you don't scenario.
Just my .02

Hi Alan,
I would remove the links. If you're indeed suffering from a penguin penalty, your site will suffer as long as you have those links. Ask these directories/sites to remove their links to you, or disavow them. Keep a log of your backlinks, the ones you've identified as spammy, and the actions you've taken to clean up your link profile.
I know you're concerned about removing these links and how it will affect your search rankings. As long as you're under a penalty, your site won't do as well in SERPs. Cleaning up your link profile will get you out of the Google doghouse, and help you on your way to better SERP listings. Make sure you're working to get links from highly authoritative websites, and you'll be in a better position.
Good luck!
Morgan

Links Not Detected by MOZ, AHREFS, GSC-ARE THESE QUALITY LINKS?
Our SEO provider has been creating content (6 blog posts per month as well as building page write ups) and has been promoting that content. Several links per month have been created as a result of this effort. Many of the links have been from commercial real estate publications. I am concerned that the quality of these links is not high enough to improve our ranking. Most links do not appear on AHREFS, Google Search Console or MOZ. Is this a red flag that these links are weak? Ranking and traffic on the site have improved considerably since this provider began the project in April of 2019. They have been writing about 30 pages about New York City. commercial buildings each month in addition to 4 short blog posts and 2 extremely well researched and authoritative blog posts. My concern is that the links are not of sufficient quality to result increased ranking. That the improvement in ranking is solely due to the addition of new content rather than the creation of these links. Basically, that I am incurring the cost on an ongoing basis of an link building campaign with little to no benefit. That being the case, I would shift resources to content creation and increase and improve content rather than develop links with little value. A sample of links are below: Would greatly appreciate some feedback as to whether these are in fact helpful to the domain authority, reputation and ranking of our website. Thanks,

Negative SEO impact of two Similar Domains on Same IP
Our ecommerce company has acquired a former competitor which has similar content & largely sells the same set of products. Both domains run on the same ecommerce platform version and do well organically on an overlapping set of keywords. Currently the websites are separate instances which are hosted separately. There is no interlinking or cross branding between the sites. Since each brand has strong equity & SEO, there are no plans to combine brands or domains. For several reasons, it would be ideal to combine platform instances and hosting, but we are concerned about potential SEO impact of shared IP addresses. Is it likely that moving the sites to the same IP/C-Block could have a negative SEO impact since they rank on the same keywords. Would Google devalue one site if they were seen to be connected or owned by the same company? I know this issue has been addressed for domains with more variance between products and content, but since there is a large overlap (but not duplicate content) between our two domains, we wanted additional insight. Obviously there are other SEO factors when you move a site, but we are currently trying to understand this specific factor. Thanks Community for your help! -Amber

How Can I Redirect an Old Domain to Our New Domain in .htaccess?
There is an old version of http://chesapeakeregional.com still floating around the web here: http://www.dev3.com.php53-24.dfw1-2.websitetestlink.com/component/content/category/20-our-services. Various iterations of this domain pop up when I do certain site:searches and for some queries as well (such as "Diagnostic Center of Chesapeake"). About 3 months ago the websitetestlink site had files and a fully functional navigation but now it mostly returns 404 or 500 errors. I'd like to redirect the site to our newer site, but don't believe I can do that in chesapeakeregional.com's .htaccess file. Is that so and would I need access to the websitetestlink .htaccess to forward the domain? Note* I (nor anyone else in our organization) has the login for the old site. The new site went live about 9 months before I arrived at the organization and I've been slowly putting the pieces together since arriving.

Links on page
Hi I have a web page which lists about 50-60 products which links out to either a pdf on the product or the main manufacturers website page containing product detail. The site in non e-commerce is this the site/page likely to get hit by Penguin? Would it be best to create a separate page for the product/manufacturer group i.e 5 or 6 pages but linking out to the PDFs etc...?

Link Juice + multiple links pointing to the same page
Scenario
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Mark_Ch
The website has a menu consisting of 4 links Home | Shoes | About Us | Contact Us Additionally within the body content we write about various shoe types. We create a link with the anchor text "Shoes" pointing to www.mydomain.co.uk/shoes In this simple example, we have 2 instances of the same link pointing to the same url location.
We have 4 unique links.
In total we have 5 on page links. Question
How many links would Google count as part of the link juice model?
How would the link juice be weighted in terms of percentages?
If changing the anchor text in the body content to say "fashion shoes" have a different impact? Any other advise or best practice would be appreciated. Thanks Mark0 -
New Site: Use Aged Domain Name or Buy New Domain Name?
Hi,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | peterwhitewebdesign
I have the opportunity to build a new website and use a domain name that is older than 5 years or buy a new domain name. The aged domain name is a .net and includes a keyword.
The new domain would include the same keyword as well as the U.S. state abbreviation. Which one would you use and why? Thanks for your help!0 -
Dynamic Links vs Static Links
There are under 100 pages that we are trying to rank for and we'd like to flatten our site architecture to give them more link juice. One of the methods that is currently in place now is a widget that dynamically links to these pages based on page popularity...the list of links could change day to day. We are thinking of redesigning the page to become more static, as we believe it's better for link juice to flow to those pages reliably than dynamically. Before we do so, we need a second opinion.

Link anchor text: only useful for pages linked to directly or distributed across site?
As a SEO I understand that link anchor text for the focus keyword on the page linked to is very important, but I have a question which I can not find the answer to in any books or blogs, namely: does inbound anchor text 'carry over' to other pages in your site, like linkjuice? For instance, if I have a homepage focusing on keyword X and a subpage (with internal links to it) focusing on keyword Y. Does is then help to link to the homepage with keyword Y anchor texts? Will this keyword thematically 'flow through' the internal link structure and help the subpage's ranking? In a broader sense: will a diverse link anchor text profile to your homepage help all other pages in your domain rank thematically? Or is link anchor text just useful for the direct page that is linked to? All views and experiences are welcome! Kind regards, Joost van Vught
