How important is using hreflang if u have plenty of other geo signals ?
-
HI
How important is it to use the hreflang attributes and supporting sitemaps (and do you need both) ?
Since if sites are being set up on country specific tlds (but on top of WP multisite network.domain.com environment) and geotargeted in GWT, as well as country meta tags and local schema etc etc that should send enough signals shouldnt it ?
Implementation of hreflang seems like an absolute technical nightmare

Hi Kristina
Thanks for commenting and for the link, useful stuff
Re the flow chart i interpret that as saying that if we are creating a sub site in a different language to target a different country (on the WP MS network.domain.com/tr network but domain mapped to its own country spedcific TLD), unless that country has multiple language versions used then we don't need to use hreflang and that geotargeting in GWT will suffice ? So really only time i need to use hreflang on top of geotargeting in GWT will be when very similar content in very similar languages (such as US English pages targeting USA google, and UK English pages targeting UK google)
Re hreflang though - the dev have already set up custom fields for me so we at least have the option for as & when we may need to add hreflang to the pages:
So am i right in thinking we add one hreflang tag to each page for each language version of it ? (so we end up with as many hreflangs on each page, referencing the alternate page relevant to that country code, as there are different language versions of the page ?)
If so then the system is now set up for this but their asking me If I only ever want to add one tag to each page - effectively one that defines the language of the page you are on, then I could have a much simpler system than the one they have built! I take it the answer is no since we now have and want the above former solution ?
Also the WP MS system uses Yoast that we ideally want for various seo reasons. It adds a canonical tag and theres some discussion out there re using hreflang tag and canonical together may cause issues, so is it best to keep canonical via Yoast or aks dev to suppress Yoast so no canonical ?
Sorry for more questions and thanks for your help !!
All Best

You only really need to use hreflang in either the XML sitemaps OR on the page: not both. Google's pretty smart!

Should we use Cloudflare
Hi all, we want to speed up our website (hosted in Wordpress, traffic around 450,000 page views monthly), we use lots of images. And we're wondering about setting up on Cloudflare, however after searching a bit in Google I have seen some people say the change in IP, or possible sharing of Its with bad neighbourhoods, can really hit search rankings. So, I was wondering what the latest thinking is on this subject, would the increased speed and local server locations be a boost for SEO, moreso than a potential loss of rankings for changing IP? Thanks!

HREFLANG: language and geography without general language
Some developers always implement the hreflang for German (which should be "de") as "de-de", so language German and country Germany. There is usually no other German version targeting the other German-speaking countries (mostly ch, at). So obviously the recommendation is to make it "de" and that's the end. But I kept wondering and not finding anything: IF there is a more specialised hreflang, will google take that if there is no default? Example: Search in: de-at (or de-ch) Search result has the following hreflang versions: de-de; x-default (==en), en => Will Google give the result for x-default or de-de?

Using 302s to redirect pages returning in 6 months
We are doing a 2-phase site redesign (in order to meet a deadline). An entire section of the site will not be available in the first phase, but will come back in 6 months. The question is, do we use 301s or 302s for those pages that will be coming back in 6 months? Is there a time limit on what is considered "temporary"? thanks in advance!

Should I rename URLs to use hyphens instead of underscores?
Hello. We are about to launch a redesigned and significantly expanded site that has traditionally used underscores as separators between words in its URLs. Would you recommend replacing all the underscores with hyphens? That would then require many 301 redirects to maintain any links that might be out there. Thank you!

Using rich snippets with a CMS?
My site uses the webEdition CMS that is split between templates and documents (pages). A template responsible for a number of documents. If I wish to use rich snippets, how and where can I add the microdata as I can't do it on a page per page basis? My CMS documentation and its developer forum doesn't give any information on this but I'm hoping its a common problem for open source CMS's and there is an easy fix. I live in hope! Iain

Is it better to guest post with or without using rel=author?
If I guest post on 50 blogs, all using rel=author so they are attributed to my Google Plus account, would the links be de-valued since they are self reference back to my own blog/website? Would it be better to guest post on a blog that doesn't use rel=author?

Geo-Redirection
Our client has two almost identical sites targeting: Australia (www.mysite.com.au) Rest of World (www.mysite.com) Currently they have splash page on www.mysite.com asking users to select: Australia Rest of World (redirects to: www.mysite.com/home) I'm thinking they should get rid of slash page and simply auto detect if user on www.mysite.com is based in Australia and serve a message "Do you want to visit our .com.au site. It's not helped by the fact the .com site appears to get served ahead of .com.au iin australia as both sites are hosted in US. Looking to change this! Thanks in advance for your help!

Is Pinging important?
Somebody suggested me to ping my website's backlinks using services like www.Pingler.com. Firstly, I don't know what 'pinging' is and why is it important. Secondly, Should I go for it? Lastly, what kind of links should I ping regularly? I researched on google and got a feeling that only blogs should be pinged because they are updated regularly. Is that so?
