One of my early mentors told me that he sees benefit about a month after the initial link is posted, and that the links seem to get stronger roughly 5-6 months in. This seems to be true in my own analytics, though perhaps I'm reading into it a bit. Some rough testing on my part seem to show that it takes about a month for a link to directly affect rankings though, certainly.

Alan is correct. To elaborate a bit, if you were to receive a link from the New York Times home page, google would see the link within an hour and your rankings could immediately benefit. The reason is nytimes.com has a PA of 99 which basically means it is one of the most important pages on the internet.
If you were to receive a link from a random page on an unknown site, or even a popular site but on a page which is deeply buried, the link may never be seen.
Crawlers move through the internet based on links. The amount of time for the link to your site being discovered is dependent upon how well the page containing your link is linked from other pages.

It depends on when they are crawled, any think from a few hours to a few months, but useally a few weeks

Building a Backlink Profile for a Brand New Domain
Hi there, Any advice on how best to build a backlink profile for a new website - I'm very keen to avoid penalisations or throttling from Google. Any advice on DA ratios to procure & frequency of procurement would be welcome. Please & thanks

Should I continue adding new content on the website penalized by Google?
I have a website that is imposed partial action by Google due to unnatural links. We are in the process to clean up those links. At the same time, I want to add more content to the same website. My concern is whether the new content pages will be affected by Google's action as well. Should I wait until we finish the cleanup and get a green light from Google? In addition, will it be worth doing some on-page optimization on the pages that are affected by unnatural links and Google's penalty? Please advise. Thanks. John

Manual penalty & long tail
Hi guys, one of our websites has received a partial manual penalty from Google, visible in our webmaster tools panel. That website was SEO-ed poorly via external agency, using very old-fashioned, spammy solutions. We have X keywords that are filtered (drops in rankings such as 2 -> 48), and X keywords that our website still ranks well for (stays top 3, etc). Question: after we remove all the traces of SEO implemented by previous SEO manager (so we remove some bad stuff from the web, and disavow the rest of bad stuff through webmaster tools), we expect drops in positions for keywords that were previously filtered (because not many links, if any, remains). How will that process affect our previously not-filtered main and long tail phrases? We wonder if there's a point in removing that manual penalty. Our website still receives solid portion of organic traffic, because Google didn't penalized all of our phrases supported by bad SEO. Any tips or suggestions as to what path should we take from here? Mind you, this is an e-commerce website. We fear that removing the penalty will result in removing most of the existing organic traffic, and our sales will suffer tremendously.

Does more product pages mean better rankings?
We've recently been told that one of reasons why our site doesnt rank as well as a particular competitors because they have much more product pages than us. We can see that they have better quality links, which we are working on improving, which we sort of understand can be helping them beat us, but we didn't think that they would be ranked higher just because of more products. They also do not have much interesting blog / content on site. So should our limited resources be focused on getting better links, better content, or increasing our depth of product range? Thanks all.

What to do with outdated (but ranking) content?
I'm SEOing for a theatre. We've got show pages that rank when searching for the business, but are outdated as the shows are from past years. The pages aren't accessible at all from the site now, but still exist in domain and are linked to by google. If you search the business, the results are: 1. [biz name] 2. [biz name] - tickets 3-6. outdated shows Should these pages be left up, or taken down and redirected home? Would there be any seo boost to the homepage from 301ing them home, or do you think it'd be more beneficial to have more results available as entry points into the site?
