  • Hope everyone is doing well! Long story short, we have been getting a lot of customer testimonials. We started putting them on Facebook and then we decided to start adding more details into the articles section of the site. The problem is many of our customers do not go to the articles section or the FB page. We purchased a plugin to integrate most recent Facebook posts into our website. We were going to use it on our homepage as well as our top category pages. I always run content changes through the MOZ scoring utility. After integration into the home page  it dropped my score from a 99 to a 91. The first issue is consistent.... to many links... the second issue we got Rand's WTH are you doing face with a warning that we are stuffing keywords.... Not our intent, but the FB posts do have keywords in them. So for now we are testing the integration on just our garage floor tile category page but I am wondering the following: 1. In general does this type of utility improve UX 2. Does Google make some concession for 'keyword stuffing' when it is because of social media posts being displayed on the page? 3. Given that we post daily, does the 'fresh content' outweigh the increased keyword density. We are ranking top 10 for several major national keywords and we don't want to screw that up. But we want to continue to improve our layout and UX

  • So here comes the hard part of working with SEO.... I've been doing SEO for a quite long time now and as far as I concern, it has been working and that's why I can tell people I'm a SEO Manager! It was all good until 3/4 months ago when I got this client that wanted me to do SEO for his Escort Agency. I've analysed his website and came across some structure error, poor linking and so on... I've started by reformulating his website, re-structuring his urls, keeping good pages and throwing alway the poor content ones, requested some website owners to remove links to that website and so on.... All good and sorted, but when it came to do the off-page optimisation it  became a nightmare! It's pretty easy to get links for a clothing website or any other (not "obscure") kind of websites, but no serious and authority websites would link to an escort agency; It's also very easy to create something funny and nice and post it on a page of your website to get people sharing and liking on facebook, but again very hard to get people to share and like things posted by an escort agency... You can't really advertise on escorts directories and use keywords on the ad because godfather google would penalize you.... I really don't know what to do anymore, so I will list some questions and if guys SEO experts could help me out, I would be so grateful!!! How can I get people linking to the website without paying for it? How can I get good authority links to this kind of website? How can I advertise on paid directories without being penalised by google? How can i get shares and likes on social network websites? The website has about 3000 pages, been online since 2010, have at least 3 lengthy articles posted a day! Please guys help me out with this case that is making me loose my nights of sleep... If you guys need the website address and the targeted keyword I can PM you (I dont know if the forum allows me to post it here) Thank You so much for the help in advance....

  • facebook serp

Hello! One of my clients' Facebook page isn't showing up on the SERP, even when you search "CLIENT NAME facebook" or an excerpt from a live post. Our social media team looked over all the settings in Meta, and everything looks correct, so we are stumped. Anyone encounter this before?

  • Something recently clicked in my mind when looking at the way our web developers were linking to our twitter accounts:. They were linking like this: A) https://twitter.com/#!/aczarto Instead of like this: B) https://twitter.com/aczarto
(Due to a copy/paste from the address bar). Technically (A) is a link to the homepage of twitter and NOT to the individual twitter account as in **(B) **(The hash tag isn't technically part of the url, and traditionally Google has ignored everything after the hashtag) For me, this raises a few thoughts/comments: Make sure your web team is linking in (B) format and not just copy pasting the url when they visit your company's twitter page. I don't think twitter is doing this on purpose - but if they are - it is EVIL GENIUS! They are stealing lots of links heading into a user's account page and instead sending that link juice to their home page. Does Google-bot follow hash tags?  ie: When Google hits the link (A), does it crawl twitter.com/ or does it crawl twitter.com/#!/aczarto? Is this a tactic that can be leveraged by others to try and direct links to other pages? ie: MyWebStore.com/money-page/#show-link-bait that generates shares that actually produce links to the site's money page instead of the intended link-bait. Could this be possibly considered cloaking? Looking forward to people's thoughts...

  • Our YouTube Channel was endorsed by a celebrity and suddenly gained 22,000 subscribers. We are now posting videos 2-3 times a week and get a lot of engagement. Each video has an average of 10,000 views. The result of this is that we get about 200 direct visits to our website every. Almost twice as much as organic traffic from Google. Assuming that this is sustained over time, will it improve the Google  of our website? Is there anyway to use the popularity of our Google channel to reinforce the ranking of our website? Thanks!!

In the wake of encountering different versions, not certain which one is correct and will work A couple of transformations express that Search string should be - ^.*facebook.com$ besides, Replace string should be - facebook.com While according to other Search string should be > .*facebook likewise, Replace string should be - facebook keyboard ?? Generously control which one of this is correct and will work?

  • Hey guys, I want to give you a bit of background to help you understand what I'm trying to do, and the motivation why. I understand that there are a variety of opinions and beliefs regarding what I'm trying to do online, and I hope this post doesn't turn into a list of everyone's views, or a place for someone to say mean / disrespectful things regarding what I'm doing.  I feel like this group is a professional one, so I don't think any of what I've mentioned above will be a problem. Last year we were surprised to learn (in the delivery room) that our first child was born with Down syndrome.  Not having any interaction with anyone with Down syndrome I had no idea what my new life was going to be like and set out to find some information online (videos, blogs, etc.)  I was surprised to learn that there isn't much quality content out there.  Much of the information is outdated, cheesy, lame, etc...In fact many of the videos that I found by searching online about Down syndrome were by people making fun of those born with Down syndrome (comedians, etc.)  Very few of them gave me any sort of idea what the future over our family was going to be like. A few months went by, I met many many parents and others who personally knew someone with Down syndrome whose lives have been greatly enriched by their interaction.  In addition to that I realized that our life was much more normal than I could have ever imagined.  In addition I released that there have been tremendous medical advances in the last two decades and today children born with Down syndrome can attend regular classes, attend college, get married, have jobs, and live productive life's. They no longer ride "short buses", forced to stay in special needs classes, or destined to live a life in some sort of institution.  I was surprised that our son (at 3 weeks old) was going to physical / occupational / speech therapy at such a young age.  The idea today is that children born with Down syndrome work hard at a young age to stay ahead of the curve. I couldn't believe the things they had him doing at such a young age. (At just a few months old they had him on a treadmill so he could get a head start on learning to walk! ----> http://noahsdad.com/treadmill/) All of that to say, I decided I wanted to be an online resource to help give people an idea of what life is really like raising a child born with Down syndrome. I do a daily one minute video where I'm creating an online narrative by telling his story every day.
I have a growing Facebook page (http://facebook.com/noahsdadcom) and twitter account (http://noahsdad.com/) and our blog readership is growing everyday.
I own a lot of good domains, and am trying to figure out the best way to use them to create awareness.  I've been trying to read about SEO as much as I can. I've only been going on NoahsDad.com since May and my page rank is 4. (I'm not sure if that really means anything, but just wanted to share it.) All of the SEO info can be a bit overwhelming and I'm not sure  I'm doing things the best way. I was wondering if someone would mind taking a look at my site and I'll be happy to give any info you need (info from google webmaster tools / antlytics, etc…).
I think I'm doing all the 'basics."  But I'm not sure what I need to be doing to really step it up. I think the tag line / title page for the home page could be changed up, and perhaps doing some different things on my home page. When I first started my idea was to have a few different categories, Noah's Minute (which is where I was going to put my daily video), resources (posts counting helpful info), Noah's Mom, MD (medical posts by my wife who is a doctor), twitter/iPhone photos (I used one of these catigories and excluded it from my home page to post random pictures form twitter).. Not that I'm 6 months into it, I've relaized that it didn't work out the way I thought at first..every post is a Noah's Minute post pretty much (and lots of twitter pictures)…and the Noah's minute posts could be broken down into sub - categories. Or…I could not have a "noah's minute" category and change my catagories to "resources" "therapy" "toys" "how-to's" etc…and break up what I used to call "Noah's Minute" into those categories..if that makes sense. The reason I didn't do that before is that I wanted someone to be able to watch every video in the order they were created to see the whole story..since I'm doing one minute every day, someone could come and watch his story unfold from birth until present day..but I guess you wouldn't really need a category for that…you could just go to the last page of the blog. The key words I'm trying to rank well for (and I know some of these wont't be possible) are: Down syndrome Down syndrome videos Down syndrome facts Down syndrome information Down syndrome Blogs (I actually own the domain downsyndromeblogs.com as well..I wanted to make a list type website where i list out a lot of the good blogs on down syndrome) Down syndrome families Down syndrome pictures Down syndrome toys (I own this domain also…thinking of doing an amazon affliate page or something..) Down syndrome physical therapy Down syndrome occupitonal thearpy Down snydrome speech thearpy Also there are some mis-spelling of these terms that I would like to try to rank for as well..and I'm not sure how to do that in a post without my post looking like I made an error. I know that is a lot of info, but I wanted to lay everything out there. I'll be happy to post any more details that anyone needs to help me out.
Thanks again and I'm looking forward to the feedback. Rick NoahsDad.com UPDATE: I thought I would include a picture for you guys to see what your dealing with...! 🙂  Warning: His cuteness is contiguous! down-syndrome-cute-boy-halloween1.jpg

  • Hello I'm running into a strange issue with at least one of my client's video. The video is posted on Facebook. When searching for the video on Google, the SERP shows a completely wrong, and inappropriate, thumbnail image. (And in one case the preview video starts playing within Google SERP.) It also seems that Google is indexing various countries' facebook page for the same video separately (it-it.facebook.com, fr-fr.facebook.com, etc). Note that only the thumbnail and preview video within Google are wrong; if you click on the link, you see the correct video and page. I hesitate to divulge the actual client video, but there are some reports on Google's search community about the same behavior: Here's one that stargs back in March: https://support.google.com/webmasters/thread/33760205?hl=en and a more recent one: https://support.google.com/websearch/thread/71452151?hl=en It looks increasingly like a bug in some google algorithm, but nobody at google seems to acknowledge that. I've unpublished the original video from FB and submitted an 'outdated content' removal to Google, which is pending. In the meantime, my questions for our group of experts here: Has anyone else experienced this and any other suggestionso n how to fix? If we assume that this is not a google bug: how could a malicious actor or black-hat SEO influence Google's algorithms to cause this? Thanks, mickey

  • Hi, We know that social signals are usually referred to as a webpage's collective likes, comments or shares. But what about the Facebook messages generated from the messenger plugin on a web page? Especially on a business page, if one business page receives hundreds of Facebook messages through a landing page or blog page, does that count as social shares? And how effective is social signals are for a website in 2020? Although social engagement is always good for any website, my question is, how logical is it to purchase "social signal gigs" from konker or Fiverr or other gig markets? We run a social media marketing company in Australia, our website: https://www.playchat.com.au and we get a lot of messages every day through the messenger add on from our home page. Will that make any difference whatsoever? Looking forward to hearing from you. I appreciate any help you can provide.

  • I want to launch a 2 tier campaign, I have been building high-quality backlinks to my site, that means sites relevant to my niche, quality content ( more than 700 words), high domain authority and so on. But making an in deep research I realized the half of my backlinks are almost invisible to Google and the other ones have just a few links and traffic. So I decided to take some actions Build 2 tiers links to my backlinks in order to make them visible Boots their social signals with the same goal in mind ( social shares, likes, comments and so on) So my questions are Does anyone have experience with that? What kind of results did you get in the past? Is this useful? Thanks and regards

  • The 5-star review system is archaic. Let me first say that 5-star reviews are a successful part of my eCommerce strategy and also everyone I know that is successful as well. Why are they out of date? When you look at something with a total of 400 four-stars reviws on Amazon, what does that tell you? Almost nothing if you don't read why it was not 5 stars. It could be something Amazon automatically fixes and you don't care about. Thus it's 5 stars. It could be an issue you really care about. It's now more like 3 stars or the real 4 stars. Different products have different types of things that cause less stars, not always obvious, good, or bad. Thus I propose a new system, one that you can read the rating and know what it means. It's called 3-Levels 5-Stars. It would vary per industry. For shoes it would be, like: Walking Shoe Sold Online 1. Matches Fantasy of Style I want: 1-5 2. Logistics Like cost and if it was broken on arrival: 1-5 3. Usability, Usefulness, Durability: 1-5 The goal is for 80% of the people to not have to look any farther than the three-level five-star system. Otherwise, everybody has to read every four-star review to know for sure what's up with that product. Same with 3 stars. 4 and a half stars. Just expand the little 5-star thing the world's  got going to include three categories. You could also have a variation statistic for those that don't know that 4 reviews isn't a big enough set not to have variation in outcome, but that's only an extra addition.

  • I have a affiliate site that involves handmade boots (i.e. cowboy boots, hinking boots, etc...).  I currently put pics of them on my sites with a affiliate link.  After I do this, I use the Pinterest browser button in chrome and add them to my Pinterest account.  It adds these images to my Pinterest account with the affiliate link.  Should I be doing this or should I be adding them to my Pinterest with links to my website?

  • We have a microsite on a subdomain that is kind of a community site that has articles posted to it several times per week. The articles are often relevant to topics covered on the root domain, so links are often included. My question is, are links between the subdomain and root domain considered internal or external? Also, how much of a difference does the location of the links make? For example, if we have a related links menu with links to the root domain is that good enough, or is it that much better to have the links embedded in the article text (toward the beginning of the article)?

  • I'm wondering what people recommend for linking from press releases; specifically, what kind of tracking parameters people add to their links, if any. My first thought is to add UTM tracking parameters for Google Analytics, but I have a few concerns: bloggers that copy our link from the release include the tracking parameters in the links from their site, which would only identify the traffic as coming from the release and not the specific sites UTM parameters in the link may make it look less natural to Google Also, I've considered using shortened URL's without parameters in the release that get 301 redirected to the relevant pages, which I thought might have a few benefits: the links look more natural (no tracking parameters) UTM parameters could be added as part of the redirect after the fact if the release attracted links from spammy sources for some reason I could kill the redirect, which I'm hoping would effectively kill the link My company doesn't rely on press releases for link building, which we understand to have been ineffective for a long time, but we do send them out occasionally and want the most effective links for tracking and SEO. I'd love to hear if anyone has thoughts on these assumptions, or if anyone has different linking strategies that they have found strike the right balance of SEO and tracking considerations. Thanks!

  • I use Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram to post images that are already featured on my website. I have been following a routine of uploading the images to these social media platforms only after I can see Google has indexed the image from my original site. My website is ecommerce and the product images drive sales more than any other factor. The thinking behind my method was that when these images are posted on Pinterest, Twitter and the various Instagram crawler sites (I realise Instagram images aren’t indexed directly), Google would recognise that the image was already attributed to my website. The ‘duplicate’ image would not therefore be indexed and the originally uploaded website image would remain in ‘Google Images’. After completing various searches and reviewing other Q&A’s on Moz, it seems as though this is in no way guaranteed and images reposted on social media platforms may still replace the already indexed image from the website. I am assuming this is because Google views these platforms as more authoritative than mine. I usually change the image by adding logos, text, backgrounds, borders etc before posting on Pinterest and this seems to have worked most of the time (both the original and ‘amended for Pinterest’ versions are often indexed) but images posted on other platforms are usually identical. Does it make sense to continue with my method or am I shooting myself in the foot by reposting these images on social media at all? I obviously want customers searching for products, who then click on an image, to be directed to my site rather than one of my social media pages or worse, an image reposting site. Additionally, If I post images on social media before they are uploaded to my website (for example to tease a product launch), would Google likely class these images as the ‘original’ and therefore be less likely to index the website version of the image once it is uploaded? Any thoughts are appreciated.

  • My client, in a large industrial sector, is trying to find or purchase good data for their industry as far as benchmarks for social engagement.  While the DIY tools have social trackers, many require you to connect to the account you want to measure - so competitive research is a non-starter. What would you use to build a spreadsheet of social engagement metrics from a set of, say, 10 competitors in a niche vertical (e.g.  industrial robotics?)

  • Hi guys. So I know external linking is good, as I've seem to have read every article written on the subject from 2007 to 2016, but can't seem to find anything more recent, but does that mean you are better to at least one external link on every page? And if so, would it suffice to link just to our social media profiles even if you are in an industry where social media brings in very little in the way of customer enquiries? I've actually linked to all our social profiles but made them nofollow. However, that said, would it be better to leave them nofollow and link to Government white papers in my sector for example?

  • Hey Moz Community, I've been reading some articles that Facebook no longer likes if Business Pages run contests on their Pages. I was thinking about doing something super simple with a "Like, Comment, and Share" type of an entry. Does anyone know if this is still allowed - I can't seem to find a concrete answer. Even the guidelines for Facebook seem a bit vague. I could always take the contest offline and use a landing page on my website to generate traffic but that also doesn't help with my social following. Thoughts, insights all welcome. Thanks!

  • A popular trend among bloggers right now is to hide their long images for social media (Pinterest) using the code. This makes it so that when a reader clicks the Pin it browser button, the long image still shows up but is not displayed inside their post. Also note that the alt description for Pinterest marketers are always keyword rich, board line keyword stuffed. I've read this article from Google on hiding text and images https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66353?hl=en but not sure if this practice fits inside that scope. What are your thoughts? Will this hurt SEO?

  • We currently add original content to our website every couple of months in the form of long form articles we have guest authored for other reputable sites. We also maintain a LinkedIn company site with weekly updates in the form of annotated newsworthy re-postings. We are thinking of duplicating our LinkedIn update feed on our website as a blog in order to build more traffic and improve SEO. Hopefully the additional frequency of site updates will also help. Again, this additional content will be largely re purposed, with the exception of our value-added annotations. Good idea?  Waste of time?  Suggested tweaks? Should we link back to the original content source, no-follow, or no link?
