Always include the targeted keyword in the alt tag?
-
Studies show that using the targeted keyword in the alt tag helps to rank better for a keyword. But what if the keyword doesn't exactly describe the image, would you still use it in the alt tag?
For example, say you have an image of the brain, but the article is about cognitive behavioral therapy -- an accurate description would say 'human brain' but an SEO alt tag may say 'cognitive behavioral therapy'--which would you use?

There is some good advice here from. Scott is right that your example is not inappropriate. EGOL is steering you very well also.
When using alt text, most do not take advantage of what it can do for you. You can use around 140 characters and give a good description of the image (as if someone blind was hearing it) along with using keyword relevant text. I recently read that by having your images with good alt text get ranked in images that does have an effect on organic. Now, it wasn't Google saying it, but to a degree it makes sense it would have an effect - how much is anyone's guess. If your example is not close to what you are putting up, go with EGOL's advice and get a new image. (I suggest geo tagging it if at all possible as well).
Hope this helps.

I usually try to make the first image on the page highly relevant to the primary keyword and use that keyword in the alt. However, if the image was not well described by that keyword I would use something more appropriate.
It might help you with longtail and image search... but I doubt it will hurt much for the primary query... why not get a second image that matches the primary query?

Wow, that's a really good question. If there were only one image on a page (e.g. selling a product), I'm sure that labeling it as you suggest wouldn't get flagged as keyword stuffing. Certainly you want to enrich the human experience, but to be honest, I haven't noticed as much impact with the alt tag as I have with other methods. I'm interested to see how this discussion evolves.

I would use alt tags to accurately describe the image. Google should be able to tell that an image of a human brain is closely related to cognitive behavioral therapy and will help add to the content and quality of the page. It might even look spammy to have "keyword stuffed" alt tags.

Partially same alt tags for different images
Hi, I am checking the SEO for a website that has a homepage consisting of the 5 most important categories. These are represented by different images with the category title in clickable text in the image. When I check the alt tags of the images they all have the following structure: brand - activities - locations - category. So for each image alt text the items 'brand - activities - locations' are used and only the category changes. Can this be seen by Google as spamming?

Dealing with Canonical tag in volusion
Hi We have an ecommerce site where we have some returns/scratch /dented products identical to the original one. The onpage content of the damaged/original is pretty much identical with the damaged just having a describing the damage. I had wanted to make a canonical tag on the damaged product to the original so it would not be a problem of duplicate content but as it is a volusion site we dont have that option - it only canonicalizes back to itself! Any ideas what else I can do - cant really change the content much and I dont really want to deindex it so people find it? Thanks!

Keywords under product listing pages
Hi guys, One of my main concerns when we start redesigning the site Trespass.co.uk, is the current pages like this one http://www.trespass.co.uk/snow-sports/clothing/ski-jackets/womens-ski-jackets are bordering over optimisation. Is this the case as each product listed in the url above has "womens ski jacket" under each product. If we have 50 products on each product listing page with the product name + type of product, ie. flora womens ski jacket, xyz mens waterproof jacket. Are we over optimising the page for the main keywords by having them under each product? Would that page be over optimised for womens ski jackets? Thanks guys

SEOMoz Keyword Ranking Accuracy
Getting some mixed message on this. Is the keyword ranking informational available in SEOMoz based on the data in Mozscape or based on live Google data? Reason I ask is that my ranking for "crown moulding" for www.worldofmoulding differs: Based on the today's scan my www.worldofmoulding.com ranks in position 40 in Google. Based on a manual check with cleared out cache no local setting ... the site is 4th spot Running a third party check using "Advanced Web Ranking" tool it comes up in 9th spot, but they count the local business SERPs in which case it matches my manual search. It seems that SEOMoz is not in line with actual ranking. Any suggestion for what can be used to accurately asses SERP placement for terms?

Can I Refine My Keyword List to Highlight Top (15) Keywords?
My client is wondering if I could provide him with a list of his site's 15 Top performing SEO keywords. However, based on the layout of everything I've used here on SEOMoz, I don't believe that's possible. Or, am i incorrect? Can you indeed come up with a list of Top (XX) SEO keywords for a given time period, for a campaign/website? Thanks ahead of time.

Cannot Identify Self Cannabilizing Keyword Anchor
I am struggling to locate on our website www.towelsrus.co.uk a self cannibalizing keyword. Can anyone help? http://www.towelsrus.co.uk/Bath-Linen-Bath-Pillows/Aztex/Luxury-Bath-Pillows-With-Suction-Cups-4-Embroidered-Designs_ct463bd182pd2818.htm void Keyword Self-Cannibalization Easy fix <dl> <dt>Cannibalizing link</dt> <dd>"Luxury Bath Pillows With Suction Cups, 4 Embroidered Designs"</dd> <dt>Explanation</dt> <dd>It's a best practice in SEO to target each keyword with a single page on your site (sometimes two if you've already achieved high rankings and are seeking a second, indented listing). To prevent engines from potentially seeing a signal that this page is not the intended ranking target and creating additional competition for your page, we suggest staying away from linking internally to another page with the target keyword(s) as the exact anchor text. Creating new pages for geo targeted keywords
What's the best way to go about creating new pages for geo targeted keywords for a business? I ask because, these keywords are areas that they provide service to, but the brick and mortar business is not located. I've already run into problems trying to put too many locations onto one page. What's the best way to attack content for these new pages in order to get these geo keywords in there?
