Performing Internal Optimization Without Much Anchor Text?
-
Hi guys. We're in the process of building a new site, and are using a lot of icon based linking, image linking, etc. There is some basic text linking here and there, but not a whole lot.
My concern is, because I'm not using actual anchor text, but just images, that crawlers are going to have a more difficult time determining what pages are about.
Do I have a valid concern, or am I just worrying about nothing?
If this concern is valid, what is the best way to remedy this concern? Alt img tags?
-
Hi Cody. I just got in on the tail end of this. I'd also put keywords in the file name. Check out a previous thread on this.

Awesome. Thanks for all the clear answers guys. Sounds like pretty simple stuff. Just never done a site this graphically intense before.
Appreciate it!!

Exactly! Google has tons of factors to determine what content, images, etc are about. Still "after the book" the alt tag should be the one that is used as anchor text when using an image as a link.
-
Exactly right, and remember, Google does not only use the alt tag to determine what the image is about, it also uses the surrounding text to get an idea. You can see it uses this method when searching in Google images, many times the target image does not even have an alt tag but Google seems to be relevant.

Hi Cody,
if your content is good (it includes relevant keywords and phrases), and if you're using the most important tags properly (title, h1, h2 etc.), you should be fine.
One trick you can use to help with internal linking is to create a html sitemap of your site and link to it from the footer. The sitemap would include keyword reach links to the most important pages of your site (for example categories and subcategories).
Hope it helps.

Hi Cody,
image alt tags serve as anchor text if you use images as links.
I hope that answered your question.

More internal links pointing to internal page vs homepage
I was looking at our GSC internal links section and I saw that we have 901 internal links going to our compare rates form and 890 going to our homepage. At the end of most of our content I add a call to action to our compare rates form. Is this SEO friendly or should I have more pointing to the homepage and less pointing to our compare rates page?

How Can A SubDomain Out Perform A Root Domain?
Hi guys! I have a rather strange SEO question. It may not be that strange at all actually. If a site has a subdomain or a shopping cart that is on a subdomain through a third-party shopping cart provider, can the third party shopping cart transfer value to the subdomain causing the subdomain to have greater domain authority than the main site or root domain? Another question, this subdomain, up until yesterday, blocked google from crawling it with robots txt, however it has a much higher domain authority than the root domain. The root domain has a really low domain authority, despite not blocking google from crawling it. How is this possible? I hope these questions make sense. I am a little stumped & trying to figure out why the subdomain is out-performing the main site despite being hidden from search, if that's even the case. Please let me know if I have it all wrong..

I´d love to know your thoughts about this particular issue: Vtex is top3 e-commerce system in brazil. ( issue is huge) the system do not use 4XX responde codes If there is a error page, they just redirect it to a search page with 200 code. in Google index we can find a lot of "empty" pages ( indexed error pagess) We can´t use noindex for them Example:

International SEO Domain Structure
Hi Guys, I am wondering if anybody can point me to a recent trusted report or study on international domain name structure and SEO considerations. I am looking to read up on the SEO considerations and recommendations for the different domain structures in particular using sub-directories i.e. domain.com/uk, domain.com/fr. Kind regards,

Webmaster Tools Internal Links
Hi all, I have around 400 links in the navigation menu (site-wide) and when I use webmaster tools to check for internal links to each page; some have as many as 250K and some as little as 200. Shouldn't the number of internal links for pages found in the navigation menu be relatively the same? Or is Google registering more internal links for pages linked closer to the top of the code Thanks!

Optimal ratio of different categories of link
Hello, I know this probably depends on market sector, etc., but are there broad guidelines on the optimal ratio of different types of links - blogs, directory links, citations, etc. I'm working for a tourism business and see nearly all of their links are from directories - both generic and tourism specific. I'm thinking about re-balancing that with guest blogs, PR work, etc.

Anchor Text Usage
Hi, I have used anchor text more heavily. I built over 80 links so far, all are quality links like press releases & social bookmarks. I used to be ranking on #7 page for my keywords, then all of sudden i am not even on 50th page. Is this is because of Anchor text usage? Now should i remove those links or dilute my anchor texts by getting more links with different anchor texts. This is because the keyword i am targetting is pretty tough. So i think 80 links is not good enough. Let me know your thoughts. Here is the screenshot of the links i got so far which i think valuable. And the rest are social bookmarks. http://screencast.com/t/TJiDOanxnfZ

Ideal number of Anchor text keyword variations
Let's suppose that I want to rank for the keyword "hotels". If I put this keyword in ALL of the link anchor texts then Google will very likely penalize the site. My question is: How many keyword variations should I use in anchors (provided I want to rank for just one KW i.e. "hotels")? Would one keyword variation be okay and is it fine to use main keyword in 80% anchors and the keyword variation(s) in just 20% anchor texts, such as : hotels 80% cheap hotels 20% Note: I do not want to rank for "cheap hotels", just want to use it as an anchor variation of my desired keyword "hotels". Thanks!
