Making anchor text look more natural
-
Hi there,
I have recently been approached by a company looking to do some SEO work for them, having had a look at their link profile, they had being using a lot of exact match anchor and have seen a drop in the rankings, no surprise there.
I was thinking of asking the website where they have placed these links and changing them, so there is a mixture of exact, phrase, brand etc, what do you think? would this be best practice? or just leave these as they are and start building fresh links?
Kind Regards

Hi Ben,
Thanks for the link, very good read.
I also read this:
Clearly, after Panda 3.3, Google implemented some sort of threshold for what they feel is an appropriate ratio of anchor text that any website should have. Websites with a higher ratio than this threshold saw the value of all of those links completely discounted — it was as if they didn’t exist anymore
Does this mean going back to these websites where the exact match anchor text is a changing it to lets say phrase or brand will not make any difference?

Hi Gary,
I am currently working on a link profile which is very heavy in exact match anchors, by going deeper into this problem i noticed that there was such are large amount present because of footer, blogroll or site-wide links with the exact match anchor.
I suggest you use Open Site Explorer advanced report tool and filter on the exact match text which you would like to focus on, once you have the CSV export you can go through the list of domains linking in on that anchor, then you could use SpyOnWeb to check how many sites share the shame IP address, should you find that site shares the same ip address as a lot of other sites it's most likely part of a link farm and it would be best to request the link be completely removed. (You could also examine it's link profile and content to check its quality).
All good domains you find linking in you could request them to change the anchor slightly to something branded or even just the URL, although i would probably just leave the quality links alone and create good content to make people link in which would be 100% natural and would balance your link profile.

I would say keep them if they are good links, but you would probably want to look at changing percentages of anchor text and adding in some more "natural" terms such as brand names and generic terms.
A good guideline to a natural backlink profile can be found here:

Been referencing this one a lot recently as I find it's a great way of explaining types of anchor text.

Hi William,
They are actually placed on good websites, however they have just been excessive in using exact match anchor text which has done them no favours.
Let's say I go and change 40% of these to brand, phase etc would it not be suspicious to search engines that nothing on the page itself has changed apart from the anchor text?
Kind Regards

Are these sites spam sites? If they are legitimate links, there is rarely a chance it will effect rankings. If you however, get these and requested these links, it would negatively effect you at the end and you might want to just remove those bad sites and keep the good ones.
If sites are all good and just happens to have same match throughout, I would just contact the site to have them change it up a bit, whether it is a 4-5 word anchor text or simply the URL(very normal).

Facet Values as Anchor text
Hi I've reviewing our internal linking structure & have found that the facets/filter buttons on a category, are crawled and have anchor text to each link, for example: The anchor text to filter the product listing results by those under £50 would be: | Facet Value Less than £50.00 (15) Less than £50.00 (15) | This also has the source URL & destination URL of http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lockers I haven't come across this before - is this an issue?

Internal Links Query - What should be use as anchor text
Hello All, We are looking at our internal links and most of them say "More" or "View All" The "more" anchor Text links - are usually positioned on the Body Content as we only display a portion of the content and then the user clicks more to see all the content ? - Should we be changing the "More" Text to something more keyword /phrase friendly i.e " more information about carpet cleaning" or "more information on Tool hire" or would that be deemed as spammy ? thanks Peter

Role of Home Page Text
My company operates a commercial real estate web site in New York City. We are competing against brands that can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars per year on marketing and SEO. I am an independent without employees. I am trying to replace generic home page text (my web site is ww.nyc-officespace-leader.com) with more engaging language that will differentiate the site. In terms of SEO best practices, what constraints exist on home page text? Must it discuss the brand in a general way? Must it specifically describe the interior pages of a site? For new home page text, I wanted to take a practical approach and provide visitors with a checklist that would be useful for their search. The check list would be in the form 500-800 words or very practical advice, specific items they should be aware of before commencing a real estate search. No other site is taking this approach and it could save tenants time and grief. I am attaching a very rough mock up of the new text (forgive the grammar, really needs to be edited!). Is there any thing wrong with this approach? I may have stumbled on a good idea, however maybe nobody has taken this route because it is inappropriate for a home page. I would very much appreciate any comments or guidance anyone may have. Best, Alan Rosinsky 0d76Iv2

Handling duplicate content, whilst making both rank well
Hey MOZperts, I run a marketplace called Zibbet.com and we have 1000s of individual stores within our marketplace. We are about to launch a new initiative giving all sellers their own stand-alone websites. URL structure:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | relientmark
Marketplace URL: http://www.zibbet.com/pillowlink
Stand-alone site URL: http://pillowlink.zibbet.com (doesn't work yet) Essentially, their stand-alone website is a duplicate of their marketplace store. Same items (item title, description), same seller bios, same shop introduction content etc but it just has a different layout. You can scroll down and see a preview of the different pages (if that helps you visualize what we're doing), here. My Questions: My desire is for both the sellers marketplace store and their stand-alone website to have good rankings in the SERPS. Is this possible? Do we need to add any tags (e.g. "rel=canonical") to one of these so that we're not penalized for duplicate content? If so, which one? Can we just change the meta data structure of the stand-alone websites to skirt around the duplicate content issue? Keen to hear your thoughts and if you have any suggestions for how we can handle this best. Thanks in advance!0 -
How fast to change non-branded anchor text
A client has most of his links from sitewide partnership links with non-branded anchor text. One we changed to nofollow and one partnership we're ending next month, but the rest he wants to change to branded anchor text There's 7 sitewides and a bunch more single links. Should we change the anchor text all at once or space it out to one major change per month?

[Feedback Wanted] Building exact match anchor links for awkward phrases
We all know that exact match anchor text is sill a key factor in ranking well on the engines, but how do you build links for awkward phrases like. **ppc london ** **architects new york ** **accountants new york ** The Bio Solution I know one solution might be to include the anchor in your bio after the company name like: _Luke Skywalker works for DeathStar Accounts New York and often blogs about fishing, playing golf and kissing his sister. _ Are Some Key Phrases Too Spammy But say for example you want to link in the content, obviously you can phrase things differently and make it sound "ok" and probably "acceptable" but it still sounds a bit rough when it reads like this: "We performed a review of all the accountants london and found them to have worse Excel skills than my grandma." Obviously this would read better as: "We performed a review of all the accountants in london and found them to have worse Excel skills than my grandma." Possible Options: Just deal with it, the blog owner will let it slide more than likely if the rest of the content is useful / quality. Change the anchor slightly so its not exact match e.g "accountants in london" and optimise the page for "accountants london" Choose another phrase that reads better and has fewer monthly searches If anyone has any ideas, suggestions or feedback I would love to hear them.

Anchor text help
Hello, I am a small website designer in Mexico.. as you know it is hard to rank in these keywords My main competitors appear with (diseño web = web design) on google.com.mx Almost 80% of the anchor text from my links are (diseño web Mexico =web design Mexico) If I search (diseño web Mexico =web design) on google.com.mx I appear on first page. If I search (diseño web = web design) on google.com.mx I appear on page 3. My questions: Is this because my anchor text is diseño web Mexico? should i change it to (diseño web = web design)? Or is it because (diseño web = web design) is a harder key word to rank? this is my website http://bit.ly/eKyWvr Regards
