Has anyone seen direct improvement after April 23 by requesting reinclusion?
-
Using the open site explorer I have figured out that my former seo agency was buying name spam (mostly Asian sites)for my main keywords and did the same in a private network of blogs. I don't speak any eastern languages and seo Super Dude has left the planet. So... I don't really have much to report to the Google Webmaster folks.
How much time - effort- cash do invest in removal requests vs, redo the whole darn site and hope for the best?
All the best.

For some reason I can't "thumb" up any comments, but these are all good answers.
In Ian's case, 40 domains is a reasonable amount. Most websites will have many more than this, often in the 100's or 1000's of spammy, low-quality links that they paid for over time.
Also, there's no guarantee Google will ever lift the penalty, even if you remove 100's of links and submit multiple fully documented reinclusion requests to the Google Web Spam Team. I've known SEO's that have literally sent 1000s of emails and removed 100's of links to no avail. I've also seen smaller sites remove just a handful of links and their rankings bounce right back.
Here's how I would tackle the problem:
1. Do you think you can reasonably remove 60-75% of the links? Or at least have a VERY good reason why you can't? Anything beneath this level and you'll most likely be fighting an uphill battle with Google.
2. In some cases, even if you've been penalized by bad links, some of those bad links still help you - even at reduced traffic levels. So you may be penalized, but you're still seeing more traffic than you would otherwise. In a few cases it's not worth it to remove the links at all.
3. Finally, as Ian said, how many good links do you have? If the sight is truly burned, can you walk away from the good links without too much regret? If the answer is yes, it may be time to start over.
There's no right answer for all circumstances, so weigh your options carefully.

I went through OSE a few months ago and got together a list of about 40 domains that we had never asked for links from and were just spam.
I wrote to all that I could asking for removal and then put everything in a spreadsheet and sent it to Google. Two weeks later I was informed that a manual penalty had been removed.
Our organic Google traffic is now up over 150% from last year.
For us it was worth it.

Here is another way to look at it:
If you could delete all the low quality links to your site, how many really good links would you have left? If you wouldn't have much left, you should probably start over, and work on building high quality links.

In my personal opinion language shouldn’t be a problem as English is considered to be the universal language amount the IT dudes in Asia (At least I think that way...)
How much time, effort and cash to do the link cleanup... I believe this is very much depends upon how you want to go with the cleanup process... I really like this post regarding that by Cyrus Shepard http://cyrusshepard.com/boom-1-email-60-bad-links-gone-4-tools-for-easy-link-cleanup/
This post will help you identify how much time, effort and cash will be required to complete the cleanup process.
Hope this helps!!

Does anyone know the linking of hashtags on Wix sites does it negatively or postively impact SEO. It is coming up as an error in site crawls 'Pages with 404 errors' Anyone got any experience please?
Does anyone know the linking of hashtags on Wix sites does it negatively or positively impact SEO. It is coming up as an error in site crawls 'Pages with 404 errors' Anyone got any experience please? For example at the bottom of this blog post https://www.poppyandperle.com/post/face-painting-a-global-language the hashtags are linked, but they don't go to a page, they go to search results of all other blogs using that hashtag. Seems a bit of a strange approach to me.

301 Re-directing 'empty' domains
Hello, My client had purchased a few domains and 301 re-directed them, pointing to our main website. As far as I am aware the 'empty domains' are brand related but no content has ever been displayed on them, and I doubt they have much authority. The issue here is that we took a dive in ranking for our main keyword, I had a look on ahrefs and found the below: | www.empty-domain/our-keyword | 30 | 19 | 1 | fb 0

G+ 0
in 4 | REDIRECT 301 TO www.main-domain/our-keyword | 8 Feb '175 d | The ranking dip happened at the same time as the re-direct was re-discovered / re-crawled. Could the 'empty' URL in question been causing us any issues? I understand that this is terrible practice for 301 redirects, I was hoping someone in the community could shed light on any possible solution for this.0 -
Trackback URLs & temporary re-directs
Hi Community, I have receiving an increasing number of temporary re-direct status codes via MOZ crawl diagnostics. I have taken a look more closely and these URLs are 'trackback urls' from blog posts, the website is Wordpress integrated. What is best practice for these 302 temporary redirects? I have read that best practice for a 302 is to 301 re-direct a URL, but is this the case for a trackback URL?

Guest Blog Posts (Originally Seen on . .)
We are making a push to get our blog posts featured on other blogs, and bring in guest bloggers. We figured we could just repost a blog post on our blog, and link back to the original post. Obviously this provides some link juice, but do you think it's a bad idea because of duplicate content? Specifically, I'm also a Huffington Post blogger, so I have the option of writing an article, posting it on our site and HuffPo, and linking back to the original to give us links. Any advice?

No improvement from Google penalty despite a lot of work
Hi Everyone, i hope someone can help. Our site www.danbro.co.uk suddenly dropped across all keyphrases and even our brand name on 12th April. We receieved a notification of unnatural link building and so the problem was obvious. Since then we have removed a number of old blog links, forum links that we have built up over a number of years. Once removed we sent a reconsideration. There are still a number of links we are trying (but sometimes to no avail) to remove. It is quite frustrating as we do have a number of high quality links on really relevant sites and we do update our content on a regular basis. Does anyone have any other solutions of what we can be doing? changing the domain name is not an option as it is the brand name. any help is much appreciated

Familiar with the malware reinclusion process?
One of our sites was haXX0red and at the moment I'm thinking it was a non-updated paid for WP plugin using the old version of timthumb. While not important to my question, the hack included .htaccess files in all the /uploads/ to redirect to a site (tonycar dot com) which I assume installed some sort of malware or spyware. I changed all ftp and admin log ins, updated the timthumb files and deleted all the .htaccess files, for added measure I've currently made the upload folders read only. I've requested a review through webmaster tools and the image that WMT claimed to be an issue has been removed as being an issue. That is to say if I clicked on the malware warning in WMT, it told me imagex.jpg was a problem and now it doesn't tell me anything is an issue, though the malware warning still persists. As I no longer have any indication as to what (if anything) is wrong, I tried going through some contacts at adwords to no avail, though they have said there's a note saying there's no malware currently on the site (I'm hoping that's by them and not just my reinclusion request). Assuming the all mighty G is now satisfied there's no malware on the site (or being processed by the site), does anyone have any idea how to get rid of the warning? Alternatively if the warning is accurate, how can I find out what's being effected?
