I don't think there's anything wrong with branding your work in this way. There's a legitimate relationship between you and the customer. Things start to get a little more manipulative when you have "web design" as the link instead of your company/brand name and even worse when you see "web design mytown" and the like.
I would give your customers the options of removing the link if they wish, but as long as the link is subtle and the customer is happy with your work then I suspect they won't mind. I'm also guessing you'll have links to their sites from your portfolio page (if you have one?)
It's also common to see this tactic used by template developers and again I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with this.
If you are concerned with hundreds of links coming from a customers large site then you may want to limit the link to just the home page.
You may also want to consider which customers wear your brand. There may be some that you'd rather not be associated with publicly.
What i would say is that these links are likely to be relatively low value so make sure you build some good high-value links from authoritative, sites related to your business.

Volusion is a big e-commerce platform and they do this on every Website they build. If customers want it removed they have to pay to have that done. I think it's a brilliant tactic if you design Websites and no, it's not bad for your SEO. You might consider offering your clients the option of removing "Powered by XYZ" for a set fee. Volusiong considers customers who remove their link to be in violation of their TOS, unless they've paid to have it removed of course.
I don't see this as a problem for your SEO, quite the contrary. I think it's a good thing.

Is there an extra SEO benefit for linking to pages that link to you?
Currently working on a link-building strategy and have gotten a few mentions. Just curious if there is any SEO benefits of linking back to the pages my site was mentioned and linked on? Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks!

Partner links - is this bad?
I have been looking at whys to get natural links, another SEO company said that instead of doing Guest Blog Posts there now adding single links to partner pages on websites which have a follow link. To me this sounds like basically a links page rebadged as a partners page. Is this a dangerous practice? or does this carry some weight with the search engines?

Do No follow links from social media platforms transfer authority or value when they link to third party websites?
With social media playing a bigger role in SEO (since the Panda, Penguin updates etc) and how search engines rank sites now, does anybody know why Twitter for instance has 'no follow' when I check my client's websites under 'inbound links' on Open Site Explorer?

Hi If you plan to add new links to a site which currently has very few inbound links what is the maximum amount you could add in any one day before it is deemed by Google to be suspicious and unatural. I am referring ot manually added links, not robotic. Thank you 🙂

Panda Update: Isn't a link still a link?
I was doing some link building and some SEO's said that the Panda update affected many websites. I am going to use eZineArticles.com as my example. EzineArticles was affected by the Panda update and does not show up in the SERPs as much as before. But they still have doFollow Links coming from the articles I am submitting. QUESTION: Regardless if EzineArticles was affected by the Panda Update, isn't a "Follow Link" still a "Follow Link" OR am I completely wasting my time on this devalued website? Edit: Yes I know a PR 0 page is not as valuable as a PR 9 page. I am asking from the standpoint of the affected Panda Update domains overall.
