Wiki/Knowledge bases
-
Hi
A client of mine is creating a knowledge base/wiki for their website. There using there suppliers own knowledge base (basically their a reseller). What would be the best practice with regards to duplicate content. Would it be best to make all the pages "no follow"? and block the pages by the robot.txt?

Hi Tom
Yes that makes sense, think the robot content noindex, nofollow would be the best solution.
-
If the pages will be exact duplicates, you could do either of the options you've given above, or you could use a canonical tag and point it to the original page.
My person preference would be to add a noindex tag on the head tag of the code, so it would be:
Of course, this means the page won't be indexed which is a shame as a knowledge base can be a great way of pulling in long-tail keyword traffic. If you ever wanted to rank it, however, the content would need to be made unique.
Hope this helps.

Enabling Podcast for Search / Structured Data
Hi, I'm trying to configure a podcast to show up in search using these guidelines and need help identifying which code to use per these instructions. https://developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/podcast Out of this, we put the following code inside the header tag of a designated podcast page, and it doesn't seem to be rendering properly when I test it. For this podcast home page: https://www.thepitchqueen.com/podcast-success-unfiltered/ href="http://successunfiltered.libsyn.com/rss"/> <title>Success Unfiltered Podcast</title>Any ideas about what to do? Or if this is correct, let me know?

Best Google Practice for Hacked SIte: Shift Servers/IP or Disavow?
Hi - Over the past few months, I've identified multiple sites which are linking into my site and creating fake pages (below is an example and there's over 500K+ of similar links from various sites}. I've attempted to contact the hosting companies, etc. with little success. Was wondering if my best course of action might be at this point: A) which servers (or IP address). B) Use the Google Disavow tool? C) both. example: { http://aryafar.com/crossings/200-krsn-team-part19.html } Thanks!!

301 Redirect without specifying base domain?
Hi guys, about 10 minutes ago, I finally found the underlying problem in magento between 301 redirects and canonical tags - part of the reason why it was hard to identify was because the problem is not constant through all pages. Anyway now that I found the problem, I have about 50 301 redirects to implement via .htaccess. Now I know the regular syntax is Redirect 301 /oldpage.html http://www.yoursite.com/newpage.html But I'm wondering if there's a way that the base domain doesn't have to be specified in the second half of this line. Something like: Redirect 301 /oldpage.html /newpage.html I'm sure this can be done, somehow. Thanks!

Location Based Content / Googlebot
Our website has local content specialized to specific cities and states. The url structure of this content is as follows: www.root.com/seattle www.root.com/washington When a user comes to a page, we are auto-detecting their IP and sending them directly to the relevant location based page - much the way that Yelp does. Unfortunately, what appears to be occurring is that Google comes in to our site from one of its data centers such as San Jose and is being routed to the San Jose page. When a user does a search for relevant keywords, in the SERPS they are being sent to the location pages that it appears that bots are coming in from. If we turn off the auto geo, we think that Google might crawl our site better, but users would then be show less relevant content on landing. What's the win/win situation here? Also - we also appear to have some odd location/destination pages ranking high in the SERPS. In other words, locations that don't appear to be from one of Google's data center. No idea why this might be happening. Suggestions?

301 redirect to 1 of 3 locations based on browser languge? Is this ok?
Hi all, I'm taking over a site that has some redirect issues that need addressed and I want to make sure this is done right the first time. The problem: Our current setup starts with us allowing both non-www and www pages. I'll address this with a proper rewrite so all pages will have www. Server info: IIS and runs PHP. The real concern is that we currently run a browser detection for language at the root and then do a 302 redirect to /en, /ge or /fr. There is no page at the www.matchware.com. It's an immediate redirect to a language folder. I'd like to get these to a 301(Permanent) redirect but I'm not sure if a URL can have a 301 redirect that can go to 3 different locations. The site is huge and a site overhaul is not an option anytime soon. Our home page uses this: <%
