What are the SEO ramifications to forwarding your website to Facebook?
-
I have a client who wants to forward their website traffic to a campaign on Facebook for two week. I think it's a horrible idea on so many levels, but need a solid reason why. My gut says that their Google rankings will suffer, but I can't find any research/articles that state such. Help?
-
Sorry - no specific article comes to mind. but you could pint out our answers!
-
These are all helpful answers. Does anyone have links I can use to show the client this shouldn't be done?
-
Completely agree with everything mentioned, what would be interesting to hear though - and possibly amusing - would be why your client thinks this might be a good idea?
-
This would be a clear violation of Google's terms and, when caught, the site would be removed from Google's index.
The role of a search engine is to help user's find the information they seek. Over time, Google extends a level of trust to your site by indexing your pages and directing users to your content. By redirecting users in this manner, your site is betraying that trust.
The reasons for your site's actions are irrelevant. You can re-direct everyone to a page on Japan disaster relief because you believe strongly in the cause. The action is still not in alignment with Google's interests, nor those of your site's visitors.
-
Take any site out of the search engines and see what happens. Whether it's a 301 or a 302 redirect will determine the long term impact. 302s tell the search engines "this page has temporarily moved". Which is all good and fine for a matter of hours, maybe even a couple days. After that, all bets are off.
Users will be disoriented. Expecting to come to an actual site, and being sent to a Facebook page will be disorienting and alienating. It will be annoying and off-putting to users. Many users may very well never come back to the main site afterward.
Intentionally redirecting users who expect to come to a company site is deceptive. And extremely unprofessional. It breaks an expected user experience trust.
Doing it with an entire site could cause all sorts of red flags from a search engine perspective. Because of those very user deception and alienation issues.
Redirecting an entire site to Facebook is very unwise from an SEO perspective, from a user experience perspective, from a brand cohesiveness perspective. Bad. bad. Bad.

They have a large website, I don't know the number of pages. Yes, they do wish to re-direct the entire site to their facebook page.
-
I apologize. I should have been clearer.
Do they have a 100 page website and they wish to re-direct the entire site to a single page on facebook? Or do they wish to forward the traffic from a single page on their site to the facebook page?
-
They want to do a 302 redirect. I'll read the link you provided, thanks!
-
Can you clarify what you mean by "forward their website traffic"?
The idea behind a 301 or 302 forward is to send visitors to the same content in a different location. If the content is altered, then you run afoul of Google rules. This could be seen as cloaking or doorway pages.

Should I have multiple websites for my different brands or one main website with different tabs/areas?
My client creates apps. As well as the apps they create themselves, they have made some of their own that cover various different topics. Currently they have individual websites for each of these apps, and a website for their app making business. They are asking whether they should just have one website - their app building site, which also includes information about the two apps they've built themselves. My feeling is it's better to keep them separate. The app building site is trying to appeal to a B2B audience and gain business to build new apps. AppA is trying to help carehomes and carers to streamline their business, and AppB is trying to help workplace and employee welfare. Combining them all will mean lots of mixed messaging/keywords even if we have dedicated areas on the site. I also think it will limit how much content we can create on each without being completely overwhelming for the user. If we keep them all separate then we can have a very clear user journey. I would of course recommend having blog posts or some sort of landing page to link to AppA and AppB's websites. Thoughts? Thank you!

Best Way to Create SEO Content for Multiple, International Websites
I have a client that has multiple websites for providing to other countries. For instance, they have a .com website for the US (abccompany.com), a .co.uk website for the UK (abccompany.co.uk), a .de website for Germany (abccompany.de), and so on. The have websites for the Netherlands, France, and even China. These all act as separate websites. They have their own addresses, their own content (some duplicated but translated), their own pricing, their own Domain Authority, backlinks, etc. Right now, I write content for the US site. The goal is to write content for long and medium tail keywords. However, the UK site is interested in having myself write content for them as well. The issue I'm having is how can I differentiate the content? And what is the best way to target content for each country? Does it make sense to write separate content for each website to target results in that country? The .com site will still show up in UK web results still fairly high. Does it make sense to just duplicate the content but in a different language or for the specific audience in that country? I guess the biggest question I'm asking is, what is the best way of creating content for multiples countries' search results? I don't want the different websites to compete with each other in a sense nor do I want to spend extra time trying to rank content for multiple sites when I could just focus on trying to rank one for all countries. Any help is appreciated!

Page Speed Factors For SEO
Hey Guys, I have developed a page and optimised it. I have got a dilemma, I have 2 variants of the optimised page I could use. The page is responsive and uses bootstrap from an external CDN. The 2 variants: External CDN - This is adding an an extra request and is delivering the entire framework (not ideal for mobile) I've looked in the node/grunt.js route (+unCSS) to remove redundant CSS, which led me to my next variant. Inline CSS. After doing some grunt.js work I shaved out the redundant code from the framework then added it inline. I will also point out that all assets are optimised, all CSS/JS/HTML is minifed. In terms for score the 1st variant is less than the second, but I believe that most users of the internet already have bootstrap cached due to it being so common. The ultimate question comes down to ranking, I'm not entirely sure where I draw the line between development and SEO (I will also ask in Stack Overflow). Which one would rank better? all other factors being equal.

Optimising a Dynamic website ?
A client has bought the Nostalgia wp theme. I've installed Yoast but because the website is ajax based and the content for the pages are dynamically loaded the plugin won't work. Or at least not to my knowledge? The developer doesn't currently have a solution, which from previous expereience it will never be supported. So I need some possible solutions here. Create a mobile site? Cons more time, more money etc Create non dynamic pages linked in footer area. Cons page duplication etc. It's a small niche so having the basic elements is imperative to getting it ranking.

Splitting one Website into 2 Different New Websites with 301 redirects, help?
Here's the deal. My website stbands.com does fairly well. The only issue it is facing a long term branding crisis. It sells custom products and sporting goods. We decided that we want to make a sporting goods website for the retail stuff and then a custom site only focusing on the custom stuff. One website transformed and broken into 2 new ones, with two new brand names. The way we are thinking about doing this is doing a lot of 301 redirects, but what do we do with the homepage (stbands.com) and what is the best practice to make sure we don't lose traffic to the categories, etc.? Which new website do we 301 the homepage to? It's rough because for some keywords we rank 3 or 4 times on the first page. Scary times, but something must be done for the long term. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. We are set for a busy next few months 🙂

Critique My Site For SEO
Hi Everyone, I was wondering if someone might critique my site and let me know what you think. I've done pretty much everything I know to do proper seo for my site. I'd love to hear some critiques about what I am doing wrong. I'm not sure if my titles are okay, being that they are similar amongst pages. The other thing is that for all the javascript buttons on the top I have no followed them since they don't have any anchor text. The way google will crawl my page is through the links in the footer. I was thinking of moving them throughout the body of the page since I hear google isn't giving as much weight to footer links. I also wanted to hear what you think about putting a blog on my site and updating with fresh content as opposed to creating a separate blog and then linking back to my website with anchor text. Thanks for all the help. And glad to be a member Bill
