Best way to measure local search keyword rank
-
I have several clients that have a regional or local presence and want to track their rankings for various keywords, but only in the areas they are located in. What are the best ways to track keyword rank in specific locations or regions of the US?

Hey there! I know it's an older thread, but wanted to let you know we're now able to track local rankings. We wrote a blog post about it at http://moz.com/blog/local-rankings-in-moz-analytics.

The question is specifically about rank tracking by region—not traffic by region.

You can use filters in Google Analytics to only show traffic broken down by keyword in specific Cities, States, Metros, Continents, etc.
Use this symbol - | - to insert multiple criteria into the same filter (for example, if you wanted to group a bunch of cities - "Chicago|New York|San Francisco|Anchorage."

You would have to use some kind of rank tracking software independent of Moz. Maybe as a feature add-on with Moz analytics they will eventually roll out that functionality (fingers crossed).
It seems like it's in poor taste to recommend competitors here... but nonetheless, Whitespark has a local rank tracker (though there is a wait list for sign ups) and Advanced Web Ranking allows you to specify rank by location. The drawback of AWR is that you'd have to configure a ton of stuff on your own and run the rank checks on your own (which means you're going to need at a bare minimum at least 5-10 proxies). That usually spooks most people off.
Last, you could actually get a very real picture by extracting the CD parameter using filters in analytics and then throw in Region or City as a secondary dimension. That wouldn't give you your average regional rank for particular keywords, though. It would give you the ranking on clickthrough from the SERPs.

Page Speed or Site Speed which one does Google considered a ranking signal
I've read many threads online which proves that website speed is a ranking factor. There's a friend whose website scores 44 (slow metric score) on Google Pagespeed Insights. Despite that his website is slow, he outranks me on Google search results. It confuses me that I optimized my website for speed, but my competitor's slow site outperforms me. On Six9ja.com, I did amazing work by getting my target score which is 100 (fast metric score) on Google Pagespeed Insights. Coming to my Google search console tool, they have shown that some of my pages have average scores, while some have slow scores. Google search console tool proves me wrong that none of my pages are fast. Then where did the fast metrics went? Could it be because I added three Adsense Javascript code to all my blog posts? If so, that means that Adsense code is slowing website speed performance despite having an async tag. I tested my blog post speed and I understand that my page speed reduced by 48 due to the 3 Adsense javascript codes added to it. I got 62 (Average metric score). Now, my site speed is=100, then my page speed=62 Does this mean that Google considers page speed rather than site speed as a ranking factor? How to force keyword check?
I used to have only 5 keywords that I tracked, but I have just added about 100 more. But when I look in the overview, it says: "Rankings Updated Every: Tuesday Last Data Update: 01/07/2013" It is not Tuesday yet, but seems that it was updated on January 7th. Will I have to wait another week? How can I force a re-check? I'm in rush to get this data 😞

Since the 6th June there has been a serious drop in search impressions and clickthroughs in my GA + webmaster accounts.
Since the 6th June there has been a serious drop in organic search impressions and click throughs in my GA + webmaster accounts for my website. This leads me to believe my site has been punished for something? Where would be the best place to start diagnosing the issue causing the drop in search traffic? 2T9hz.jpg

How would you measure the SEO success of new site launch?
It has been 12 months, and it is time for some serious SEO reality check up. I think we have done some really nice things (social integration, on page optimization etc) but we honestly could do a million time better on some other elements (anchor, text, link building etc...). Would love to hear from the community what would be the top 10 criteria you would use to judge the quality of the SEO work done for a new site during is first 12 months. PS: we are a very content rich over 1,500 new articles/post in our niche with 12 months - our site is migraine.com Thanks
