From HTTP to HTTPS
-
Hi
We have implemented HTTPS to the our website. Do we need to now redirect the whole site to HTTPS in the HTTACCESS file?
Because when you enter the site via a google search or enter the domain directly the site is set to HTTP once we click on a URL on the page it sets it to HTTPS so do we require to redirect from the start?
thanks

That Stack Overflow discussion goes into getting Google Tag Manager up and running. It's best to clean up URLs to get as many as possible pointing to HTTPS. That way you're not making unnecessary redirection hops with things you can control. Cheers!

Thanks guys
Just to confirm would you recommend goign through and altering all links that point to HTTP to HTTPS for example: google+, analytics etc or would the redirect be sufficient and do this automatically?
Also noticed that google analytics and adwords are now blue and not green in tag assistant once the change was made - any ideas?
thanks

Right. If you want the HTTPS from the start you'll need to redirect to it. There's a few nice discussion around how over at Stack Overflow, here's one such example: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13977851/htaccess-redirect-to-https-www. The code you use may vary depending on what you want to achieve.

Hi Ram,
Yes, you absolutely should redirect all of your HTTP pages and other resources to the HTTPs version to prevent the situation you describe happening. It's likely Google will see duplicates of each of your pages which will cause ranking issues.
There's a great check-list at the bottom of this blog post by Cyrus Shepard which will take you through everything you need to do.

Website Not Performing after switch to HTTPS
We recently switched our client's website to HTTPS but after the move, we've experienced a huge decrease in rankings (off the map), and traffic. Our metas for the homepage are not being picked up by Google, although it was appearing correctly before the switch. We've implemented all redirects, resubmitted URL to Google, and updated GSC. GSC is also reporting errors in our XML stating there are no URLs to crawl. Has anyone had any issues similar? What do you all recommend? Help greatly appreciated

Redirect chains from switch to HTTPS
Hi, We have a client who recently switched their site to https:// The rule to force redirect non-secure URLs to https is in their .htaccess file: RewriteEngine on if non-SSL and one of these, redirect to SSL RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.clientdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L] However, they also have simple redirects below this rule that redirect one page to another, such as: Redirect 301 /old.php https://www.clientdomain.com/new.php This is causing redirect chains like this: (A) http://www.clientdomain.com/old.php > (B) https://www.clientdomain.com/old.php > (C) https://www.clientdomain.com/new.php Is there any way to rewrite the rules in .htaccess to get rid of these redirect chains? So that URL A goes directly to URL C? Thank you!1 -
Combining multiple HTTPS sites
Hi there! I am currently combining several sites (corporate brochure site and ecommerce site) for a client into one central website. All of the content and structure on the new site is set up and relevant pages have 301 redirects ready. My main concern is that the old .co.uk website has an SSL certificate and will be pointing to the new pages on the new .com website (with new SSL in place). Will this cause connection privacy issues? And if so, what's the best way to resolve them? Many thanks!

Is there any reason why a website would submit all their content (videos, photo galleries, articles) to this?

Are there any concerns moving a site to https?
I am currently having analytics issues where the non-secured (http) front end of my site is not properly communicating to the backend (https) of my site. When a user jumps between the the secured and non-secured, it will display as a bounce in GA and I get duplicate visits. GA has a work around for this but it is messy and not working. So my question is, has anyone had good/bad experiences moving a non-secured site over to the secured side? Thanks!

What are the different tactics for getting ranked/ included in Google finance searches such as http://www.google.com/finance/company_news?q=NASDAQ:ADBE
I don't know what ranking factors they are using for this feed. The results vary greatly from a search done at google.com or google.com/news and google.com/finance I'm working with a website that regularly publishes finance-related news and currently gets traffic from google finance. I'm wondering what we can do to optimize our news articles to possibly show more prominently or more often. Thanks
