Best to Leave Toxic Links or Remove/Disovow on Site with Low Number of Linking Domains
-
Our site has only 87 referring domains (with at least 7,100 incoming links). LinkDetox has identified 29% of our back links as being toxic and 14% as being questionable. Virtually all of these links derive from spammy sites.
We never received a manual penalty, but ever since the first Penguin penalty in 2012 our search volume and ranking has dropped with some uneven recover in the last 3 years.
By removing/disavowing toxic links are we risking that over optimized link text will be removed and that ranking will suffer as a result? Are we potentially shooting ourselves in the foot? Would we be better to spend a few months building quality links from reputable domains before removing disavowing bad links? Or toxic links (as defined by LinkDetox) so bad that it should be a priority to remove them immediately before taking any other step?
Thanks, Alan

If your site has in fact been negatively impacted by Penguin, you'll have to wait for the next Penguin refresh for your changes to have an impact. You may see fluctuations due to other algorithm changes though.

That is reassuring!!! My concern is that the number of domains that link to our site is so low (less than 100) that evening removing low quality links could be a negative.
In terms of seeing a ranking/traffic improvement, do you think we could expect it once the links are removed/disavowed or do you think it would occur only upon a Penguin update?
Thanks!!! Alan

Toxic, spammy links can only hurt you, but they are even more harmful if they make up a large percentage of your total backlinks. Remove/disavow them as soon as possible and work on earning legitimate, high-value backlinks. Also, over-optimized link text can be harmful as well.

Google Analytics / Facebook UTM
Hello, I have a quick question. I am setting up conversion tracking for my Facebook ads, so I am giving each ad set a tracking URL (UTM) in order to see which ads are converting etc. Is it possible to see on analytics how much I am spending on these ads or a cost per conversion? Or does the tracking merely track general analytics data such as bounce rate, exit rate, revenue generated etc? Kind Regards, James

Number of goals larger than the events its bases on - WTF?
Hi all We configured a standard goal in Analytics that is triggered on an event. I have seen cases where the number of triggered events is larger than the goal completions due to limitations to how many times the same goal can be fulfilled within the same session, BUT in this case we got the opposite problem. We got more Goal Completions than we got events that is supposed to trigger the goal. Now also added a screenshot of how the goal is configured. As you can see its just configured to use the Category name of the event. Nothing fancy at all. How can that be possible? Again, more goal completions than events that is suppose to trigger it? Grateful for any help Fredrik AclZDUO

Curious, anyone ever had over half of their indexed links drop on an e-commerce site?
In a year went from around 300k indexed pages to around >100k according to GWT. Could this be duplicate content issue, lost links, spam, aged links or all of the above? either way an audit is in order. Thanks! Chris

Cross Domain Tracking for multiple sub-domains with multi-lingual and culture versions
Hi, I have a question regarding cross-domain tracking that I haven't seen answered completely elsewhere. A client has a main domain, we'll say www.example.com and 4 or 5 sub-domains e.g. shop.example.com, support.example.com, account.example.com and service.example.com. The different sub-domains are managed by different third parties, with just www.example.com and account.example.com under our control. To add a further dimension, these sites all have multi-lingual versions as folders and in some cases multi-cultural versions e.g. www.example.com/de/ for Germany and www.example.com/ch-de/ for German-speaking Swiss. Not every language/culture has an equivalent site in place for each of the sub-domains e.g. the UK support site serves Denmark and Swiss-German users will use the German site: www.example.com/dk/ links to support.example.com/uk/ for support-based content

www.example.com/ch-de/ links to support.example.com/de/ At present, they use different analytics tracking codes and accounts. Moving forward, they would like to consolidate the data together to be able to see the collective and separate performances. They would also like to be able to see goal completions from referrals when someone clicks from the main domain to the sub-domain or across sub-domains or potentially across language and culture too. I have several questions I would really appreciate some guidance on: What will be the best way to configure Google Analytics to achieve this? Will we need to decorate the HTML links in between each of the sites? Will we need to use a new Google Analytics property? It may not be easy to answer this based on the information above, so I'm happy to provide additional information if required. Thanks in advance for your help.0 -
Get anchor text, nofollow info etc from a list of links
Hi everybody. I'm currently doing a backlink audit for a client and I've hit a small problem. I'm combining data from Ahrefs, OSE, Webmaster Tools and Link Detox. I've got around 27k links in total now, but the issue is that WMT does not provide data on target page, anchor text and nofollow/dofollow. This means I have around 1k links with only partial information. Does anyone know of a way that I can get this data automatically? Thanks!

Index.php and /
Hello, We have a php system and in the MOZ error report our index.php shows up as a duplicate for / (home page). I instituted a rel canonical on the index.php because the / gets better rank than the other. This said, the error report through MOZ still shows them as duplicates. Should I be using a 301 instead? Please help! Also, I would love a good technical SEO book (for bridging the gap between SEO and programmer) if someone can recommend one? Thanks in advance!

Link being indexed
So I found this link to my website on the huffington post http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/13/california-car-insurance-rates-vary-study_n_2122614.html it's at the bottom in the "around the web" section. My question is this article has been around for almost 4 months yet the link does not show up in WMT. I would like to know if the link to http://www.shiftins.com is indexed and passing authority. Thank you.
