Link Building
-
Hi is there any free ways of link building where you do not use exchange link sites. Also are there any free tools and paid tools that you can use to increase your links to your site.
I have a couple of new sites and i am trying to bring more traffic to them through link building and other methods and trying to find the best way of doing this.
I have heard of people talk about free tools and paid tools but not sure which ones they are.
any help would be great

The best free link building is, and always will be, great content.
Let's assume we both start SEO sites tomorrow. You spend a week submitting your site to 100 different free directories, adding your link to various asian blog comments who allow followed comments, etc. At the end of the week you have 150 new links which you know wont ever really be seen or used.
Meanwhile, I take the time to write the best article ever seen on the topic of "SEO 2011 - Guide to Panda and Google updates". The article is published on my site, then I visit 25 SEO sites, make a topical reply to a relevant Q&A, forum post or blog article leaving a link to the article which is often nofollowed. I also tweet the link to a few SEO-related accounts.
If the article I wrote is truly helpful, many people will +1 / Like / Tweet the page and link to it. In the end I would gladly take a dozen authentic links earned from real people who generally appreciate the content over the 150 links from free directories and linking services. Those links are crap, you know they are crap, Google knows they are crap and are actively working to improve their system.
Time spent improving your site for the best user experience is always time well spent. Write ONE article that is the best ever written on a topic, and let it do the link building for you.

There are a couple different strategies I would mention here that may help you out. As far as "tools" I believe they are best used to find link prospects, because there aren't really any tools that will just get links for you (at least quality ones). I would use OSE, which has free and paid versions. Another free one would be Yahoo's site explorer. In each of these cases I would say do some competitive analysis to see what links your sites competitors have. Then contact these websites to see if you could get a link on their site as well. A paid tool I have used and would recommend to help find link prospects as well is Raven's SEO Tools.
Another free link building technique I would recommend is trying to find guest blogging opportunities. If you haven't made an account on MyBlog Guest then there platform might help you out to find these opportunities. I hope these strategies can apply to your business/website because it really depends on what is available on the web and what will work for your website.

Rel=canonical "redirects" to double links
Our devs have set up rel=canonical on our website. First they used relative links href="/dir1/dir2/dir3" for the page http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/?detail1=1?detail2=2 meaning that it will redirect to http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3, but no luck, the MOZ dashboard showed the tag value to be http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/dir1/dir2/dir3, then we have decided to rewrite the code, and now the canonical to http://wwwmysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/?detail1=1?detail2=2 looks like href="http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/" but the tag on MOZ looks like http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3. So what is the problem? I really got a problem or MOZ does? The code on website looks exactly like href="http://www.aaa.com/en/bbb/ccc/vvv/nnn/" rel="canonical" /> for the page http://www.aaa.com/en/bbb/ccc/vvv/nnn/

Discrepancy between followed links. How do you explain this?
My external followed links over time have gone from 346 in late November to 402. Total external links have gone from 400 to 457. Followed linking root domains dropped from 125 to 102 (How do I find out why?). Total Linking Root Domains Over Time dropped from 152 to 126. Linking C-Blocks dropped from 124 to 42. How did I increase my links but drop the other stuff?

SEOmoz gives me a report of 404 errors on my site. Do they give a way to know from what link on what page produces the error?

What are followed vs non-followed links in Domain Analyis report?
I'm new to SEOMoz and wondering if some nice person can put this into plain English for me? 🙂 On the Competitive Domain Analysis report there are green follow / no-follow links and blue followed / non-followed linking root domains? what is the context of the green & blue circles? is there a better or worse visual representation that I should aim for - more dark green, more light green or about half & half. thanks in advance

Can someone explain why I have been seeing an increase in the number of Linking Page URLs in OSE that link directly to downloads?
Ever since the last couple Linkscape updates when doing competitive back link analysis I have noticed a large increase in the number of URLs of Linking Pages in OSE that result in an immediate file download. The majority of the time these downloads are not common files ie PDF, DOC files. For example, these were all in a competitors back link profile: http://download.unesp.br/linux/debian/pool/main/i/isc-dhcp/isc-dhcp-relay-dbg_4.1.1-P1-17_ia64.deb http://snow.fmi.fi/data/20090210_eurasia_sd_025grid.mat http://www.rose-hulman.edu/class/me/HTML/ES204_0708_S/working model examples/Le25 mad hatter.wm?a=p&id=145880&g=5&p=sia&date=iso&o=ajgrep These are just a few I came across for a single competitor. Is this sketchy black hat SEO, some sort of error, actual links, or something else? Any information on this subject would be helpful. Thank you.

Competitive link finder not working
Hi guys, I just wanted to check the status of the Competitive Link Finder. I've been trying to use it for well over a week, literally trying it every day and every single time I get the "we may be a little busy" message. Are there any plans to upgrade it? I realise its a labs tool, but its actually a really useful tool which I just don't seem to be able to benefit from whatsoever. Would love to hear what the plans for this tool are. Thanks Al
