Need advice on setting up primary domain and shopify site analytics to work best together
-
Hello,
I have a client that I have been working on their primary site for the last year or so. In the last month they decided to have one of their internal employees setup a small shopify store. Now they are asking for the analytics tracking codes for it. My question for you is what would be the best way for me to set that up?
variables: primary domain and shopify domain, google and bing analytics
Have been looking at how cross domain tracking works (https://support.google.com/tagmanager/answer/6106951), and the instructions for setting up ecommerce in analytics for shopify (https://help.shopify.com/manual/reports-and-analytics/google-analytics/google-analytics-setup). But am still not 100% which route would be the best, any input would be greatly appreciated!
thank you,
Dustin

Oh man, thank you so much, you are the best Trenton! I truly appreciate the help.

Hey Dustin,
With this implementation I would do a single GA code with cross-domain tracking setup. You don't necessarily need to use GTM to implement it, but you can if you so choose. Here's a link to Google's resource on cross-domain tracking. If you need additional resources I'd check Simo Ahava's resource here.
Shouldn't be too big of an issue once you get started. Let me know how it goes!
If you need any additional help, let me know!

Hi Trenton,
Thanks for the response I really appreciate the feedback.

Is the shopify site located on the same domain or a different domain?
-
The shopify** store is located on a different domain. **
-
If different: Are you looking to track user journeys as the pass between the two properties?
-
**I am hoping to track the user journey through the process ideally, so I can refine pages that are hit or missed through the sales funnel etc. That is why I was looking at the tag manager as a possible solution, but besides setting up goals I don't have much experience with tag manager. **

You said Bing analytics, are you running Bing Ads that you're wanting to track or what are you referring to here?
-
At the moment they are not running bing ads, although their competitors are so I could see it being something in their future. Plus I want to make sure that their site and shopify site are being indexed properly.
Thanks a ton for the input.

Hey Dustin,
I'd like to get some more information before I give you a more in-depth answer, but my quick response is below.
- Is the shopify site located on the same domain or a different domain?
- If different: Are you looking to track user journeys as the pass between the two properties?
- You said Bing analytics, are you running Bing Ads that you're wanting to track or what are you referring to here?
Quick answer:
Setup an additional property within the existing Google Analytics account for the shopify domain so that it has a unique tracking code. Then follow the instructions included in the link you provided above to get tracking setup.
Note: If customers are moving from one property to the other you will NOT be able to see their entire user journey with this setup.I look forward to hearing back so I can provide you a more exact solution for your unique situation.
Regards,
Trenton

Google Analytics / Facebook UTM
Hello, I have a quick question. I am setting up conversion tracking for my Facebook ads, so I am giving each ad set a tracking URL (UTM) in order to see which ads are converting etc. Is it possible to see on analytics how much I am spending on these ads or a cost per conversion? Or does the tracking merely track general analytics data such as bounce rate, exit rate, revenue generated etc? Kind Regards, James

Pandora in Google Analytics
Hi Mozers, in Google Analytics our ads are registering a 10 second page duration and a 90% bounce rate, which is pretty atrocious. My questions are: Organic page duration is 3:15 minutes, and Social + Referral are similar. Yet Pandora is bringing the average time on site way down, to less than a minute. Will those paid ad metrics be factored to the User Behavior and therefore negative affect our overall rankings? In other words does Google now see our page duration as less than a minute? The Pandora rep says that Google Analytics and Pandora have "systemic issues" such that GA is very inaccurate with Pandora metrics. I find that difficult to believe. Any insights here? Thanks all! Jane

Tasks for Google Analytics training
Hi Mozzers, I'm delivering some Google Analytics (Fundamentals level) training, and trying to make it was fun and as interesting as possible... which is quite a challenge when it comes to GA. I was just wondering if you're aware of training tasks, or interactions, I could bring into this kind of training session? The group are particularly interested in user journeys and the effectiveness of content. Thanks!

Organic vs SEO in Analytics
In my analytics account, the Acquisition / All Traffic / Google organic searches shows me around 19,000 hits from 1st Jan to 1st Feb. But if I go to the Search Engine Optimization tab / Queries or Landing pages I can only count 1,800 clicks from 1st Jan to 1st Feb. Why such a huge discrepancy ? Am I getting 1800 clicks from the Google organic search, or 19,000 ?

Google Analytics
Looking at a client's analytics - one page doesn't seem to record 'average time on page' data (it just displays 0.00 despite it receiving traffic) This isn't an issue for the rest of the website's pages. Any idea? http://www.smilestyledental.co.uk/ppc/general-dentistry-at-smile-style.html thanks for any help!

GA profile when migration domains
I'm migrating a .co.uk domain to .com and am trying to decide if I should reuse the same Google Profile (if I can?) or create a new one. If I choose to reuse the same profile so it has historical data, does anyone know if it's just a matter of keeping the same UA profile identifier in place on the page? Or do I have to change anything on the actual profile in GA as well to say "start pulling data from .com now"?

Best practices to track blog.mydomain.com in Google Analytics?
What is the best practice in Google Analytics? Tracking blog.mydomain.com + mydomain.com under the same profile? Or creating separate profiles for each blog.mydomain.com and mydomain.com? Thanks!
