Losing backlinks between http and https
-
Late last year, Shopify moved all their sites from http to https.
I did an audit of a Shopify site recently and discovered the following...
- The https version of the site has just 13 backlinks from 5 domains
- The http version of the site has 568 backlinks from 48 domains
So I went into the blog (which is on a different domain - long story) and changed all the backlinks from http to https. One week later... the https version of the site now has 278 backlinks from the same 5 domains.
I've been told that Google doesn't worry about this when it comes to rankings. Not sure if this is true or not. But I definitely believe this DOES affect MOZ Domain Authority.
Can anybody confirm or deny this? If the backlinks do not change from http to https following a migration, does this impact MOZ Domain Authority and/or Google rankings?

Don't really know if redirects were in place. Only just taken over the management. But from what I can gather, Shopify moved all sites on its platform from http to https.
The URLs do all seem to redirect. But the URLs within backlinks all still point to http. If I run a report in ahrefs, the http version might still have hundreds or thousands of backlinks, but the https does not. At the same time, I have seen MOZ domain authority plummet.
I just manually updated a bunch of backlinks for one site to point to https. Now ahrefs is picking them up as backlinks in their report.

Hi,
Was there a redirect in place to make sure all old links on your site will go from HTTP to HTTPS? If Yes, it wouldn't really matter as it will make sure that the link value + links will be attributed to the new version on HTTPS. If that wasn't the case than it will obviously have quite an impact. These days though it's a bit vague if couple does recognize that a site is also available on a HTTPS.
Martijn.

Client has moved to secured https webpages but non secured http pages are still being indexed in Google. Is this an issue
We are currently working with a client that relaunched their website two months ago to have hypertext transfer protocol secure pages (https) across their entire site architecture. The problem is that their non secure (http) pages are still accessible and being indexed in Google. Here are our concerns: 1. Are co-existing non secure and secure webpages (http and https) considered duplicate content?

2. If these pages are duplicate content should we use 301 redirects or rel canonicals?
3. If we go with rel canonicals, is it okay for a non secure page to have rel canonical to the secure version? Thanks for the advice.0 -
What referrer is shown in http request when google crawler visit a page?
Is it legit to show different content to http request having different referrer? case a: user view one page of the site with plenty of information about one brand, and click on a link on that page to see a product detail page of that brand, here I don't want to repeat information about the brand itself case b: a user view directly the product detail page clicking on a SERP result, in this case I would like to show him few paragraph about the brand Is it bad? Anyone have experience in doing it? My main concern is google crawler. Should not be considered cloaking because I am not differentiating on user-agent bot-no-bot. But when google is crawling the site which referrer will use? I have no idea, does anyone know? When going from one link to another on the website, is google crawler leaving the referrer empty?

Any Product to Offer Users to Embed Pictures with Backlink
Wistia (video hosting) has an embed feature, which can be set up to include a backlink. In other words, a user could embed a video on their site, but would automatically create a back link to the original page where it is posted. Is there a product to do similar with pictures, where I could give users options to easily take the pictures from my website, but it would include a back link to my site when they do use such picture?

How to get rid from unwanted backlinks
Hello, Before joining seomoz I was desperate to hire seo expert for my website and each posts on my website. I did some research and found some cheap services on fiverr.com as I didn't had huge marketing budget and I purchased some services (gig) on fiverr.com to add many backlinks to my latest post. Now before ordering this services I was on 3rd page of Google for my relevant keywords but after adding backlinks I am not on first 50 pages for my specific keywords. I admit that when I was on 3rd page the competition for my keywords was about 50,000 (with comma ofcourse) and now it is 186,000 so I do believe that competition is increased but I didn't expect such a drop in rankings. I suspect that may be Google put my site far behind because of so much backlinks and that too generated within one week. I didn't know that it will cause such a drop in rankings. I even suspect that may be there were spam backlinkgs or linkings which google doesn't like. So my question is first of all how do I know that is there any backlinks on my website or posts which can harm my rankings and if yes how do I get rid of them. Please guide me as I want to do proper and genuine seo which google likes and finally my rankings get better. Thanks Bhadresh

Backlink from my YouTube Channel, helpful for SEO?
A website will include a link to a youtube video associated with my channel. Does my website also get SEO credit, even though that website isn't linking directly to my site, but rather to a video on my youtube channel. The youtube video is also uploaded to my website, but this website wants to link to the video directly on youtube. Website is "www.hawaiijobengine.com" and youtube channel is "hawaiijobegnine.com" - how does Google know these 2 are same owner? thank you

Blocking HTTP 1.0?
One of my clients believes someone is trying to hack their site. We are seeing the requests with a server protocol or HTTP 1.0 so they want to block 1.0 entirely. Will this cause any problems with search engines or regular, non-spamming visitors?
