How to properly spin off a subdivision of an existing company?
-
An existing client of mine is the parent of a subsidiary. The parent business currently drives traffic for the subsidiary and has been doing so for many years. The subsidiaries owner is wanting to create their own website even though the companies are still in great relationships. So I'm wanting to make sure they don't compete.
What necessary steps do I need to take? My one major issue is the address. They both work under the same address and I plan on using a suite number for the subsidiary. Will that work? Even though the parent company doesn't priortize it's subsidary business for SEO, I don't want to drop in rankings and for them to compete.
Any knowledge or insight on this would be greatly appreciated! The more details the better Thanks!

All urls seem to exist (no 404 errors) but they don't.
Hello I am doing a SEO auditing for a website which only has a few pages. I have no cPanel credentials, no FTP no Wordpress admin account, just watching it from the outside. The site works, the Moz crawler didn't report any problem, I can reach every page from the menu. The problem is that - except for the few actual pages - no matter what you type after the domain name, you always reach the home page and don't get any 404 error. I.E. Http://domain.com/oiuxyxyzbpoyob/ (there is no such a page, but i don't get 404 error, the home is displayed and the url in the browser remains Http://domain.com/oiubpoyob/, so it's not a 301 redirect). Http://domain.com/WhatEverYouType/ (same) Could this be an important SEO issue (i.e. resulting in infinite amount of duplicate content pages )? Do you think I should require the owner to prevent this from happening? Should I look into the .htaccess file to fix it ? Thank you Mozers!

Company name doesn't have keyword: use domains instead?
Good Morning! Now, I'll admit, I may be obsessing a little too much on this, and it may not make that big of an impact in the long run, but with Google being introduced to the world if I were to start a business today I would try and include my keyword into the title of my business. For example Dollar Shave Club, at least they got the word shave in there. My business doesn't have a keyword in our name, is it beneficial to structure our URLs to include a keyword so that all of our URLs include that word? So if I sell organic bananas, but my company is called Evananas, is it worth it to have all domains become a child of Evananas.com/organic_bananas? That way at least we have the keyword "Organic Bananas" in our title? So I could then have things like: evananas.com/organic_bananas/recipes evananas.com/organic_bananas/benefits evananas.com/organic_bananas/taste_really_freeking_good Vs. evananas.com/recipes evananas.com/benefits evananas.com/taste_really_freeking_good I'm not sure it makes a difference. The other problem is I want to keep our URL's as short as possible. I feel like less is always more, but I was always under the impression domain/URL based keywords were rather powerful. What is the best practice in this case? Thanks Guys! Evan(ana)

Will multiple domains from the same company rank for the same keyword search?
I'm trying to convince people that we need good marketing reasons for starting multiple domains, as it will be more difficult to rank multiple sites. Does anyone know if Google actively discourages multiple domains from the same company appearing in the search results for the same keyword? We are creating a separate content website which is related to an existing company website. Would you agree that is best to have these sites on one domain with the content site on a sub-domain perhaps? I'm worried about duplication of effort and cross-keyword targeting in particular. These sites would not have duplicate content.

Copy content from news about your own company
I´ve a client who uses news articles about his company in newspaper and other magazines in his blog. It´s fair because he wants to show how how big and important he is when someone check his website but in otherwise he is just copying content from others sites. ( there is lot of original content also) Should I use noindex on these pages or use a rel=canonical? We already ask permission and show the font with the link in these cases.

Proper way to include Location & Zipcode Keywords
I have a client that is insisting that I add a list of approximately 50 cities and 80 zipcodes that their business serves within the keyword meta tag. Based on what I have been reading this will do absolutely nothing to help improve their search ranking. What would be the proper way today to let inform search engines of the geolocations a business serves?

SEO and marketing for a company that doesn't want to promote their primary website
Hi All! One of my new clients is in a semi-grey-hat industry, and is in perpetual danger of having their real websites (of which they have several), blocked by the Chinese firewall (which is where their target market is). So their idea is to use neutral sites to write information (Squidoo, article site, maybe a stand-alone WP site with a few pages) and promote those pages. The idea being that China is less likely to block those sites, and then the link to the actual website from those pages could always be changed if China blocks the website listed. I'm a little dubious as to how feasible this is - how do you promote a Squidoo page? Or an article on an article site for semi-competitive keywords? Besides on-page SEO (which may not be enough), is there anything you can really do post-Penguin? If anyone has any ideas as to the above - or as to how else to effectively market sites when you can't market the site and brand directly, I'd be very happy to hear. Thanks!

Company Blog Vs External Blog
Hi there, We write articles for our blog on a regular basis, maybe two times per week. One of those articles I usually place on an external blog first getting some external links pointing into my product pages and using a rel canonical on that article on my blog pointing to the external post, so that the external post get's all the credit. The reason I put this on my blog is I use this to point to from my email marketing activities. The question is, do you think this makes best practice? trying to get more out of this blog post.
