Best Product URL For Indexing
-
My proposed URL: mydomain.com/products/category/subcategory/product detail
Puts my products 4 levels deep. Is this too deep to get my products indexed?
-
Thanks for the advice. This was quite a while ago. I wound up going with domain/product-category/product
Works very well - every product I add gets indexed.
-
Why adding /products/ in your url? I would definatly strip that out to keep the url clean and relevant, as /products/ is just generic.
The shorter URLs you can have, but still have good "readability" for the user, the better it is, but you still want to have a good structure for inbound linking and not to deep. I would say 3 rather then 4 as the maximum.
I think, to make this fairly complex issue more simple I would say, that if you run content at your category pages, with the possibility to shop products and display of campaign information, then you really need to have the category in your URL. Same goes for subcategories.
-
One cautionary note: If the products are going to live in multiple categories (which a lot of times they do in eCom), I'd go with /product/product-detail. Avoid duplicate pages and having to canonical and get into that whole mess.
You're not going to lose a lot (or probably anything) by not having the category names in the product urls. Just my opinion though...
Magento has some great options for that if you're going in that direction.

They will follow any link on the page. There are a few exceptions such as no follow links and pages with hundreds of links may not have all of them crawled. Links in flash, iframes, etc will likely not be crawled depending on the coding.
-
Thanks Ryan. In your experience will an SE follow to the subcategory page if products and categories are non-clickable?
-
One click.
Keep in mind Google likely treats a link which is immediately visible such as your Products link with more weight then a link which requires a user action to appear. This is my belief and not necessarily an agreed upon SEO standard.
-
Thanks. I have a question. From main top nav, if user (or SE) hovers over Products the category menus drop down and subcategories fly out. User actually clicks on subcategory, with products, and categories being non-clickable. In this scenario, does arriving at the subcategory page count as 3 clicks, or 1?

My proposed URL: mydomain.com/products/category/subcategory/product detail puts my products 4 levels deep. Is this too deep to get my products indexed?
Four levels is usually the maximum depth you would want to step away from your home page. Keep in mind depth is not determined by how the pages are stored on your server nor the number of folder levels in your URL. The question is: how many clicks does it take a user to move from your home page to your product page. THAT is the determining factor.
I recommend a flatter structure whenever possible. mydomain.com/cars/ford/mustang/2012-mustang-gt would be an example URL using the layout you suggested. Some URLs to consider:
mydomain.com/ford/2012-mustang-gt
There may be a logical means by which you can drop or combine some levels.

Index, follow on a paginated page with a different rel=canonical URL
Hello, I have a question about meta robots ="index, follow" and rel=canonical on category page pagination. Should the sorted page be <meta name="robots" content="index,follow"></meta name="robots" content="index, follow"> since the rel="canonical" is pointing to a separate page that is different from the URL? Any thoughts on this topic would be awesome. Thanks. Main Category Page

<meta name="robots" content="index, follow"=""><link rel="canonical" href="https: www.site.com="" category="" ?p="2""></link rel="canonical" href="https:></meta name="robots" content="index,> As you can see, the meta robots is telling Google to index https://www.site.com/category/?p=2&dir=asc&order=name , yet saying the canonical page is https://www.site.com/category/?p=2 .0 -
Moving html site to wordpress and 301 redirect from index.htm to index.php or just www.example.com

1 duplicate I have recently transfered my old html site to wordpress.
To keep the urls the same I am using a plugin which appends .htm at the end of each page. My old site home page was index.htm. I have created index.htm in wordpress as well but now there is a conflict of duplicate content. I am using latest post as my home page which is index.php Question 1.
Should I also use redirect 301 im htaccess file to transfer index.htm page authority (19) to www.example.com If yes, do I use
Redirect 301 /index.htm http://www.example.com/index.php
or
Redirect 301 /index.htm http://www.example.com Question 2
Should I change my "Home" menu link to http://www.example.com instead of http://www.example.com/index.htm that would fix the duplicate content, as indx.htm does not exist anymore. Is there a better option? Thanks0 -
Do I need to re-index the page after editing URL?
Hi, I had to edit some of the URLs. But, google is still showing my old URL in search results for certain keywords, which ofc get 404. By crawling with ScremingFrog it gets me 301 'page not found' and still giving old URLs. Why is that? And do I need to re-index pages with new URLs? Is 'fetch as Google' enough to do that or any other advice? Thanks a lot, hope the topic will help to someone else too. Dusan

URL construction in 2014
Hey guys, I was wondering if you could tell me your thoughts about how a URL is perceived by the algo in 2014? For example: http://www.moneyexpert.com/reviews/credit-cards/amex-platinum/ and lets say http://www.moneyexpert.com/reviews_credit-cards_review_amex-platinum.html In the eyes of google do both different style of url generally help google understand the same result? or will the keyword rich html url have a bigger benefit? I am looking forward to your advice on this matter. I don't plan on doing a lot of SEO but rather letting nature take its course so to speak... so i just wanted to make sure i construct this site with 'best practice'.

Product pages content
Hi! I'm doing some SEO work for a new client. I've been tasked with boosting some of their products, such as http://www.lawnmowersdirect.co.uk/product/self-propelled-rear-roller-rotary-petrol-lawnmowers/honda-hrx426qx. It's currently #48 for the term Honda Izy HRG465SD, while http://www.justlawnmowers.co.uk/lawnmowers/honda-izy-hrg-465-sd.htm is #2, behind Amazon. Regarding links, there's no great shakes between the pages or even the domains. However, there's major difference in content. I'm happy to completely revamp it, I just wanted to check I'm not missing anything out before starting to rewrite it altogether! Thanks

Renaming a URL
Hi, If we rename a URL (below) http://www.opentext.com/2/global/company/company-ecm-positioning.htm
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | pstables
to http://www.opentext.com/2/global/products/enterprise-content-management.htm (or something similar) Would search engines recognize that as a new page altogether? I know they would need to reindex it accordingly, so in theory it is kind of a "new" page. But the reason for doing this is to maintain the page's metrics (inbound links, authority, social activity, etc) instead of creating a new page from scratch. The page has been indexed highly in the past, so we want to keep it active but optimize it better and redirect other internal content (that's being phased out) to it to juice it up even more. Thanks in advance!

Dynamic URLs Appearing on Google Page 1\. Convert to Static URLs or not?
Hi, I have a client who uses dynamic URLs thoughout his site. For SEO purposes, I've advised him to convert dynamic URLs to static URLs whenever possible. However, the client has a few dynamic URLs that are appearing on Google Page 1 for strategically valuable keywords. For these URLs, is it still worth it to 301 them to static URLs? In this case, what are the potential benefits and/or pitfalls?

URL Length or Exact Breadcrumb Navigation URL? What's More Important
Basically my question is as follows, what's better: www.romancingdiamonds.com/gemstone-rings/amethyst-rings/purple-amethyst-ring-14k-white-gold (this would fully match the breadcrumbs). or www.romancingdiamonds.com/amethyst-rings/purple-amethyst-ring-14k-white-gold (cutting out the first level folder to keep the url shorter and the important keywords are closer to the root domain). In this question http://www.seomoz.org/qa/discuss/37982/url-length-vs-url-keywords I was consulted to drop a folder in my url because it may be to long. That's why I'm hesitant to keep the bradcrumb structure the same. To the best of your knowldege do you think it's best to drop a folder in the URL to keep it shorter and sweeter, or to have a longer URL and have it match the breadcrumb structure? Please advise, Shawn
