Noindex, Nofollow to previous domain
-
Hi,
My programmer recently did a horrible mistkae by adding noindex, nofollow to our website without me noticing for two days.
At the same time he did it we bought a new domain and redirected the old domain to the new domain:
The Old domain is: http://www.websitebuildersworld.com
and the new one is: http://www.websiteplanet.com
Now unfortunatly I didn't notice the noindex, nofollow when it was on the old domain and I redirected it to websiteplanet.com before I fixed the noindex, nofollow.
I fixed the problem around 10 hours ago on the new domain (www.websiteplanet.com)
but the old domain didn't get indexed back (yet), so for example if you search for WebsiteBuildersWorld in google you will not reach the homepage as google deleted it because of the noindex, nofollow.
My question is:
Do you think that it will be fixed and google will retrieve websitebuildersworld homepage to his search results and then redirect it to websiteplanet?Or because I redirected websitebuildersworld.com to websiteplanet.com before letting google crawling websitebuildersworld.com without the noindex,no follow it wouldn't get indexed again?
I hope I explained the problem good enough.
Looking forward for your valuable replies.
Thanks.

Hi Andrea,
Thanks for your replies.
I decided to retrieve the old domain and do 302 redirect from the new domain to the old one.
I will let google index the old one completely once again and only then i will do 301.
Would love to hear what you think about that.
Thanks,
Eliran. -
Here's the concept at its core: how can Google crawl redirects and index new pages if it can't crawl those redirects to get to the new pages and process the 301s?
Fix that to fix your problem. The link I shared has a lot of good comments very centered on this general topic.
And, I am intentionally avoiding giving an absolute solution to you because, quite frankly, I don't know enough or am involved at all in your site to feel comfortable doing so. Strategically, I'm happy to share ideas/best practices.

Hi **Andrea,
Thanks for your reply. **I have no worries about google getting me back to my rankings, I am sure he will.
The main problem is as you quoted: "In order for Google to index your new site it has to re-crawl the old site which is redirected there. As each url is accessed, the redirection is found and applied."
Are you suggesting that I need to put websitebuildersworld.com domain backup and let google re-crawl it and only then redirect it?
Thanks,
Eliran. -
The reason that comes up to my mind is that basically I didn't let google see WebsiteBuildersWorld.com without the noindex, nofollow removal fix so he wouldn't know what to redirect or something like that because the last time he visited websitebuilderworld.com he saw noindex, nofollow and now he can't visit it anymore because he is being redirected to websiteplanet.com

"maybe I need to upload the website with the old domain again and let google re-index it and only then do the 301, what do you think about that ?"
I'm not 100% certain, but I can't think of any reason you would need to do that.
-
Hi Adam,
Yes this is what I thought.
But I also had a weird thought that maybe I need to upload the website with the old domain again and let google re-index it and only then do the 301, what do you think about that ?As for a' and b' yes I will do that.

I think I get what you mean and this stuff can get a bit tricky - first and foremost, it can take days/weeks/months to get things unclogged after an issue like this and there's no promise you'll get exactly the same ranking as you had before.
Getting back to your original question, and not to kick you when you are down, however, Google never recommends moving an entire site at once because you don't catch major things like this. Now, to your question, here's answer: "In order for Google to index your new site it has to re-crawl the old site which is redirected there. As each url is accessed, the redirection is found and applied." I think that's what you are trying to get at?
There's more info here that may be worth you reading through: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/04/best-practices-when-moving-your-site.html

I think I understand. Since your site was de-indexed, Google has to start over indexing your site on the new domain. This is what should happen:
Google will follow any external links it finds pointing to your site, will find the 301 redirect, and will follow that to your new site. Google will then crawl your new domain. Google will "forward" most of the link juice from your backlinks to your new domain.
Via your internal link structure, the forwarded PageRank will be spread throughout your site. This will hopefully result in you regaining the rankings you previously had.
I assume you have forwarded each subpage on the old domain to the same page on the new domain?
I would also:
a) if you can, change over at least some of your backlinks to point to your new domain
b) build/attract links to your new domain
-
The thing is that I didn't 'give' google the chance to index the website again with the old domain after I fixed the noindex, nofollow.
Quite hard to explain, but do you get what I mean?
-
Oh, OK. Then I would say: yes, you should regain your rankings, though it's possible it will take time. Some SEOs have reported it takes several months to regain their rankings after switching domains, but I personally have not had that issue.
-
Hi Adam,
Thanks for your reply, but it wasn't really my question I afraid.
The thing is that I wonder if google will index back all our results and put them back in their spots and just redirect to the new domain.
Thanks,
Eliran. -
Google is not going to index http://www.websitebuildersworld.com, because it redirects to http://www.websiteplanet.com. Google won't index a domain that redirects to another domain. It will index the domain where the content is hosted.
-
Hi,
Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.
Yes the sitemap is submitted in WMT, thd old domain sitemap and the new domain sitemap.
So in your opinion everything should be back to normal, correct?
and yes, very big stuff , he uploaded the Header from the demo file with the noindex,nofollow... caused me to lose a lot of money and I around 80% of my pages including homepage got deleted from SERP's.
-
Go into WMT if you have an account and resubi your sitemap for websitebuildersword.com, or simply google suggest site or something similar and find where you can submit your site to google again.
It should get indexed again anyway, because you should have some links out there somewhere that the bots will detect and go to your site from.
Quite a big stuff up though, on your programmers part.
Good luck

High Quality Domains and what to do with them
Hi, I rus a travel photography business. The primary function of the website is to sell prints, though I blog about my travels on the same domain name as well as a few pieces of content that are helpful to users interested in some of the places I travel to. I do okay with it, but obviously, I am always looking for a way to increase visibility and sales of prints. I own a couple of high quality keyword domain names, that I've been trying to figure out what to do with. One of which is for a city that my prints of my photography are probably best known for. The domains I'm really trying to decide what to do with are basically a www.citystatephotography.com and www.citystatephotos.com, where the city and state are the ones I'm targeting. The question is, what do I do with it? I've seen various ideas from other photographers that have various levels of success. Here are the options I'm considering: Just redirect it to the photo gallery of photos that I'm trying to rank highly for. From what I read on various blogs, this doesn't really do much of anything, but maybe I've read wrong? Create a website or microsite with some quality content related to the city that also links back to my photography website on various places and possibly once in the navigation. I do have quality content I could put up that would be helpful to people from the city besides just trying to get sales. But there's always a chance this will cannibalize my original domain without helping sales, I assume? Spam my photo galleries across two domains. Most of my photography galleries would stay on my main domain that I already run, but the photo galleries that are key to that city would be hosted on that citystatephotography.com domain name. I've seen a photographer from Colorado do quite well with this method. (www.imagesofrmnp.com and www.morninglight.us) He's heavily known for his images of Rocky Mountain National Park and that seems to be his main brand, but all of his non-RMNP travel photography goes on the other site. The two sites look almost identical, though they link back and forth fairly extensively. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of duplicate content either. I've considered this method, but I'm nervous I'll kill what I've already built up if this were to fail. Do nothing with the domains. Seems wasteful, as these domains, particularly the citystatephotography.com domain seems useful in some way. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Redirect ot new domain
Hello, Can someone give me advice on this specific situation: For now we have a website www.website.com/ Because of some specific business situation we want to move to .ca version but also we want to keep website.com - for U.S customers. Here's how I imagined to do this: 301 Redirect from www.website.com to website.ca. Because at this time website.com redirects to www.website.com I would remove the redirect and just keep it like website.com (so this will be new domain). Is this is the right solution? Regards, Nenad

Client wants a seperate .tv domain for their media/videos instead of a subdomain/subfolder. What is the best way to pass of link equity to a new domain?
We have a client that wants to place their video content on a .tv tld instead of a subfolder/subdomain in their .com website. They believe that the .tv domain will better represent the media experience of their business. We can understand this client's position however we are concerned about their .tv domain will lose out on the link equity if it were no longer placed in the .com's subdomain/subfolder. Here are our questions: 1. What would be the best way to pass of link equity from .com website to a new .tv domain? Should we just have a video link on the .com website that 301 directs to the new .tv domain? 2. Is there any SEO benefit of having a .tv domain for Google Video queries or even Youtube? 3. Is there any long term value of having two different websites? For link equity purposes we understand that it would be better if everything was in a .com. However is a .tv domain ideal for a better representation of their media content? We appreciate any feedback.

Previously owned domain & canonical
Hi, I've recently joined the business and as part of the cleanup process I got told that we owned this domain preferredsafaris.com with some very similar content to our main site southernafricatravel.com. We're no longer owns the preferredsafaris.com domain but looking at Google's cache for it we realised that the title, meta description & page shown when looking at the 'cached page' is for our current domain even though it is showing the 'correct' URL there. I imagine this might have something to do with canonical set on those pages but the weird thing is all those pages now render 404 & do not show a canonical in the source code. I have used Google Removal Tool https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/removals for all those URLs & Google says that it has removed them & yet they're still showing. What do you suggest? Any potential issue in regards to duplicate content here? Cheers, Julien

Duplicate Sub-domains Being Indexed
Hi all, I have this site that has a sub-domain that is meant to be a "support" for clients. Some sort of FAQ pages, if you will. A lot of them are dynamic URLs, hence, the title and most of the content are duplicated. Crawl Diagnostics found 52 duplicate content, 138 duplicate title and a lot other errors. My question is, what would be the best practice to fix this issue? Should I noindex and nofollow all of its subdomains? Thanks in advance.

Purchase of domain name from a different industry.
Hi I am thinking of acquiring a domain name, although it is currently being used in a completely different industry to the one I hoping to use it for. The site only has 46 links and was registered in 2009. It has a DA of 25, Home PA of 37 and PR of 2 I was just wondering how easy or hard it would be to optimise the website for a completely different industry, i.e. lets say it was initially bought to sell hair-care products and I want to use it to sell electronics. Would I leave the existing links in? Could I use that new disavow tool in webmaster tools to wipe the slate clean and start again? Really haven't come across this before, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your time, Steve

Exact domain or subfolder?
If I am targeting a specific keyword, from an SEO perspective is it better to create a subfolder on a url that has some authority or is it better use the exact domain with no authority? For example, if I want to target the word 'widgets' which is the better choice and why? **Choice 1: ** www.domainwithauthority.com/widgets Note: this domain has 1000 links to it **Choice 2: ** www.widgets.com Note: this is a brand new domain with 0 links
