Working with country specific domain names vs. staying with .com
-
I've recently inherited a client that has a country specific domain for Canada (.ca) but there is also a US branch for the company at the .com address. They have a direct competitor that operates also in the U.S. and Canada that has decided to operate entirely under the .com address and re-direct all .ca traffic to their .com address.
When I compare the link analysis data for both the .ca, .com, and competitors site, I'm finding there is a huge difference between the .ca site and the competitors site, but not a huge difference between the .com site and the competitors site. For example, the domain authorities are as follows:
- myclient.ca (Canadian branch) - 22
- myclient.com (US branch) - 46
- competitor.com - 53
When I do a brand search for my client in Canada, the Canadian branch website shows up first, but the American one is second.
At this point, would it be better for my client to consolidate the two branches into the .com address and focus on increasing external followed links to the .com website? Or, is there merit in continuing to create a separate inbound link strategy for the .ca site?
Thanks.

Hello James,
Having a ccTLD definitely provides some ranking benefit in the target country. If the .ca domain is doing well for them I don't think I would consolidate it. Contrary to the other response, it is perfectly fine to have a separate ccTLD/domain for other countries.
However you might want to look into geotargeting each domain in Webmaster Tools (setting the .com version to US geotargeting may take care of the 2nd place brand search issue).
Of course this is just my opinion based on my own experiences. I will leave the question open for awhile so you can get more input from others.

Thanks for your response!
In the US, Google doesn't show the .ca domain until the 3rd page of results (.com is 1st result), so that's not too concerning to me. But in Canada it shows .ca first and .com second, which is a bit confusing.
I think my client may not be able to get everything organized under the .com URL because of the way the company is structured, but I want to be clear that that is the best recommended course of action for SEO success before offering them a link building campaign for the .ca site.

I think you've correctly identified a couple of things here. Firstly that you shouldn't be running multiple domains for the same website, and secondly that US customers are unlikely to click on a .ca domain for a local branch.
I think the .com domain would be best for you here. You might want somebody to back me up on this, but I believe if you 301 redirect .ca to the new .com address appropriately the good SEO juices from the .ca domain will be transferred to .com. I don't think this is an overnight thing, but I imagine that as soon as Google realised ".ca now lives at .com" they'll work out the rest quite quickly.
If the US and Candidan websites aren't the same then consider having the different regions as subfolders on your .com domain - for example yourclient.com/us/ and yourclient.com/ca/

Moving from single domain to multiple CCTLDs
Hi, I have a website targeting 3 markets (and therefor 3 languages). I was currently using a single domain with each market being targeted in the following format: www.website.com/pl

www.website.com/de
www.website.com/hu It's clear to me by looking at organic results, that in my industry (Real Estate) Google is putting a large emphasis on local businesses and local domains. Top 10 organic results for all my keywords in all markets have country specific CCTLDs. I decided to migrate from a single domain strategy to a multi domain strategy. I own the domains. The new structure is www.website.com/pl -> www.website.pl
www.website.com/de -> www.website.de
www.website.com/hu -> www.website.hu All the website have been added to google search console and 301 redirects are in place and working correctly. The pages are all interlinked and have rel=alternate to each other. The sitemaps are all done correctly. My question is how do I tell Google about this. The change of address feature only works for changing one domain to one other domain. It's been a week and the old www.website.com domain is still showing up (even considering 301 redirects). Or do I just need to be patient and wait it out? Any tips?0 -
Multiple Domains Appearing in SERP - 1 .com, 1 ccTLD
Our global domain and our US ccTLD domain both appear for brand searches in the US. How do I recommend to our Tech team to fix this, as it skews our Organic traffic numbers between the two domains? The brand is Sportradar. (Sportradar.com / Sportradar.us )

Country and Language Specific URL Paths
Wanted to ask everyone a questions: So our company is going to be doing a website that is going to be full of videos. The url path will be country.domain.com/language/slug/content-id. We redirect the user when they go to the different country. So if you're in spain on a train to france your URL will change from es.domain.com/es/slug/content-id to fr.domain.com/es/slug/content-id. Each country can listen to each video in all languages. My question is with hreflang tags and canonicals. Aside from targeting users in a certain country via Google Search Console, how do I eliminate duplication and tell Google which I'd like to show up via which country. In spain I would like es.domain.com/es/slug/content-id to show in Google and would have hreflang tags on each of the es.domain pages but what about fr.domain.com/es/slug/content-id since it would show the same content? I can't canonical to one of them since I need them to show in their respective country. How do I show the difference in language and country without showing duplication?

What is the best way to rank well on both Google.co.uk & Google.com?
I am working on a website that is primarily a UK based software company but is now expanding into the US. The website is a .com site and is not geo-targeted to any specific location. Currently the site ranks well on Google.co.uk for a number of the focus keywords. We are now targeting Google.com as well to increase visibility in the USA. The site is ranking number 1 for one of the focus terms on Google.co.uk but no where to be seen on Google.com but on another term the site ranks 3rd in both Google.co.uk and .com. There are a number of other terms that rank on the first page in Google.co.uk and on the 3rd or 4th page in Google.com. The server is located in Germany and I do not want to geotarget the site to the US as I am concerned this would have a negative impact on the .co.uk ranking. The site currently has a mix of .com and .co.uk links pointing back to the site, in actual fact possibly more links actually come from US sites already. My original plan was to just focus on building links back to the target pages from US sites rather than creating a US folder on the site and geotargeting that section of the site in WMT and having to build page authority for a completely new page with no existing backlinks. But now that I have a number 1 ranking on .co.uk and the same term not ranking at all in .com as well as a postion 3 ranking for a term in both .co.uk and .com I am slightly confused as to the best options. Any help, advice, opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Same website in different countries, best practices for SEO?
Hey Guys, I have read several similar questions regarding mine, but none seem to truly cover my question. Basically, we have a company named Junair. We created the website for the company here in Australia (http://www.junair.com.au). As can be seen throughout the page, it mentions that it caters for both Australia and NZ (NZ has its own phone number). It does ok in the rankings at the moment, but rankings will continue to rise in the future once more links are getting picked up. Now however, the Junair team in NZ purchased the NZ domain http://www.junair.co.nz and redirected it to the Australian page. No matter which page you visit on the NZ URL, the URL will never change, and neither will the page title. They have now contacted us and asked to perform SEO on the NZ domain so the NZ domain would show up in searches on Google NZ. At the moment, when searching for "Junair" on google.co.nz, the Australian domain is coming up. How could I change this so the NZ URL would show instead? And what would be the best practices to perform SEO on the NZ URL, should I just create links pointing to http://www.junair.co.nz ? Thank you, Roderic

Will duplicate content across international domains have a negative affect on our SERP
Our corporate website www.tryten.com showcases/sells our products to all of our customers. We have Canadian and UK based customers and would like to duplicate our website onto .ca and .co.uk domains respectively to better service them. These sites will showcase the same products, only the price and ship from locations will change. Also, the phone numbers and contact info will be altered. The sites will all be on one server. On each of the sites there will be a country selector which will take you to the appropriate domain for the country selected. Will doing this negatively affect our rankings in the US, UK and Canada?
