Meta descriptions for subpages in the SERPs
-
Hey Mozzers!
Something occurred to me the other day was that, while we can write title tags and meta descriptions to be within the character count and therefore appear nice and neatly in the SERPs, when Google et al decide to pull subpages out as further site links, it seems to still pull the normal meta description but with a far lower character count. As this looks untidy and could potentially impact CTR, is there a way I can amend the preferred text for the shortened version, via Webmaster Tools, for example?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Nick.

Hi Nick,
I believe there is no longer a "character count", but more a space or pixel limit - http://www.seomofo.com/experiments/serp/snippet-ascii-art.html
This has been played out by a few people's experiments, so looks fairly solid - the limit relates to space, not character count. You could certainly try to create something that looked good both as a regular result and a sitelink.

Thanks guys. I thought that may be the case as all the ones I've seen have been cut. Is there even a set character count, as I could potentially write one that would at least look neat if cut early? Or does it depend from search to search?
As you say, this seems like something they maybe should look at, because while you would undoubtedly lose real estate by cutting all meta descs, you also lose a chunk by having your call to action cut, often in nonsensical or messy ways (I'm aware that this can happen anyway, but anything we can do to minimise this is always welcome!)
Thanks again!

Hi
Marty is correct there is no way of currently doing this, but I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't out soon, as they are always trying to get a better user experience for their users.
I will ask Google later this week and let you know what they happen to say, I will keep you updated as soon as I find out

Hi Nick,
Unfortunately at this time there isn't a way to specify a shorter meta description. The only way to achieve what you're looking for would be to shorten all meta descriptions for sub-pages but that means you'd lose a lot of real estate if it showed up in a normal SERP.

Hi, I want to index all my categories and tags. But I fear about duplicating the meta description. for example: I have a tag name "Learn Stock Market", a category name "Learning", and a main article "What is Stock Market". Does using Yoast variables for meta content overwrite any pages that already have custom meta content?
The question is about the Yoast plugin for WP sites. Let's say I have a site with 200 pages and custom meta descriptions / title tags already in place for the top 30 pages. If I use the Yoast variable tool to complete meta content for the remaining pages (and make my Moz issue tracker look happier), will that only affect the pages without custom meta descriptions or will it overwrite even the pages with the custom meta content that I want? In this situation, I do want to keep the meta content that is already in place on select pages. Thanks! Zack

I updated my page title and description along time ago, the title updated but not the description. I updated it in google search console, but it keeps pulling the first few lines from the page content instead, which isn't really an attention grabbing sentence?? Any ideas? Here's the page http://thumannagency.com/personal-insurance/home-insurance This is what my Title/ description comes up as... Long Meta Titles on Dynamic Pages
What to do with long meta titles on press release pages. Unlike other pages on the site, press release pages have no physical value and are dynamically created picking data from the database. Such pages i notice are automatically picking the URL/H1 as meta title and meta description. How to shorten such meta titles and descriptions? Do such errors (related to dynamically created pages) matter? Tanveer

New to MOZ and so far love tools but need some quick tips on title, keywords and descriptions
First of all:
On-Page Optimization | | nickcargill
I am excited about using all the MOZ tools! I just got back my webcrawl and have found
a lot of issues that I am working on. I am a Vacation Rental Property Manager with 150 properties, all different. 90% of my pages have the same keywords and descriptions and a lot of same page titles
too. I can change all of these by adding a few fields in my database and then
populating the meta information dynamically. For Example: <title>Big Bear Cabins | Big Bear Cabin Rentals - Chateau Alta Vista Cabin</title>
Chateau Alta Vista, Big Bear Cabins, Big Bear Cabin Rentals
Chateau ALta vista is a Big Bear Cabin with four bedrooms, three
bathrooms, it is Big Bear Luxury Property. If you notice the Title, keyword are dynamically populated from the database using the
property name of Chateau Alta Vista. The description is an extra field in the database that I just implemented that I can customize per property. I have a few questions, but here is more information: I also have 5 or 6 related pages
to each property. Pages Like general information, photos, calendars, book
Question 1): Is the best way of doing my titles, keywords and descriptions. Any concerns or recommendations. I have read, do not even use keywords anymore. Question 2) I have other pages that show maybe 8 or 10 photos. So is it ok to do the following; Title <photos of="" big="" bear="" cabin="" chateu="" alta="" vista<="" title="">Meta Keywords <photos of="" big="" bear="" cabins="" chateu="" alta="" vista="">Meta Description <check out="" photos="" of="" big="" bear="" cabin="" rentals,="" chateua="" <br="">Alta Vista, etc Currently, I have some archaic page naming with database driven url parameters such as</check></photos></photos> http://destinationbigbear.com/property_Detail_v.aspx?propid=669 and at worse http://destinationbigbear.com/Property_detail_v.aspx?propid=669&rate= $1,127.10&checkoutdate=07/13/2014&beds=4&firstnight=07/11/2014&nights=2 I do not have he ability to to full url encoding such as http://destinationbigbear.com/cabins/chateau-alta-vista but I can do http:/www.destinationbigbear.com/big-bear-cabin-info.aspx?cabin=chateau%alta%vista Question is what do I do... If I do change the page names I will lose the history of property_detail_V.aspx which only has a Page Authority of 21, but if I change the page name and dynamic navigation of my website will I not lose all my authorities, if so, is it worth doing it? My highest keyword ranking is 30 which is terrible. Nick0 -
What are all those meta name= and link rel= on the cnn home page source?
I usually use Description, title and keywords tag. I keep seeing these meta name = "classification" or "distribution" and also link rel =stylesheet" and "pingback" etc. Please tell me how important this is for SEO. It would be great to be pointed to the right page. Also, is there a wordpress pluggin to just fill in and have these be populated on the front end? Thank You

SERPs Showing H1s Instead of Title Tags?
Hi, I'm noticing two strange things in search results recently. Often I find that if I search for a client's company name, I see just the company name in SERPs where the title tag would normally be displayed. Examples: 'aci northwest' 'lanz heating' As strange as that is, I'm tempted to assume this is just Google's way of "getting smarter" and showing more relevant results (though I'm not sure exactly where it's pulling from). But it gets stranger. For the first example, 'aci northwest', when search that key phrase on Bing/Yahoo!, etc. I'm not only not seeing the title tag where it would normally be, but I'm seeing the H1 in it's place: "When your projects demand more, demand ACI." Any idea what's happening here? Thanks in advance!

Is this new? Anchors showing in Serps.
I was checking out a keyword today and I noticed several listings on Google that had a line underneath that said, "Jump to keyword". The "keyword" was an href name anchor on the page. Is this new? Should we be including more anchors on our pages now? It makes sense as it helps the reader to navigate the page. Here is a photo of an example: 7XwaQ
