For a long time, we had terrible on page SEO. No keyword targeting, no meta titles or descriptions. Just a brief 2-4 sentence product description and shipping information. Strangely, we weren't ranking too bad. For one product, we were ranking on page 1 of Google for a certain keyword.

My goal to reach the top of page 1 would be easy (or so I thought).

I have now optimized this page to rank better for the same keyword. I have a 276 word description with detailed specifications and shipping information. I have a strong title and meta description with keywords and modifers. I have also included a video demonstration, additional photos and an PDF of the owners manual.

In my eyes, the page is 100% better than it ever was. In the eyes of MOZ, it's better also. I've got an A with the On-Page Grader.

Why is this page now ranking on page 8 of Google? What have I done wrong? What can I do to correct it?

          Hi Dustin

I checked the last example a bit more in detail:

Webpagetest indicates that his page is even heavier than the one I tested the first time - results here: http://www.webpagetest.org/result/150501_XQ_Q1H/ (load time ok - but page way to heavy)- page speed analyser results are not terrific either. Check also the links on the page - a lot of your css files seemed to be 301 to a new location - it's better to call directly the final location. Optimising shouldn't be too difficult - compressing images, js,..etc should really increase your scores.

Also on the technical side, probably good to clean the code a bit. You don't really have to pass the W3C validator test, but it seems your page generates a awful lot of errors.

From a content perspective - looks good. A remark could be that a lot of content is not directly visible when loading the page (read more, tabs). Google announced end of 2014 that they don't really like content that is hidden when the page is loaded (https://www.seroundtable.com/google-hidden-tab-content-seo-19489.html). Don't really think this would cause a drop - but it's something you could consider changing if you modify the HTML code.

          Hope this helps,

          Dirk

            Hi Dirk -

It's actually another website, not included in my profile.
            The page is: http://www.1-800-shaved-ice.com/simply-a-blast-snow-cone-machine.html

I did the same optimization with some other pages, and we are ranked number 1 on the first page.  These are the pages that have done extremely well.

              Hi Dustin,

If the site is the one mentioned in your profile - it's almost certain that it's a speed/performance issue. I checked one product page - and grade from google for desktop is 49/100 - 67/100 for mobile. Webpage test indicates the page size of 2700K - mainly images, javascript & flash. It should not be to difficult to improve these scores - optimising the images & the js will help a lot.

              rgds,

              Dirk

This can have different reasons - without having the actual example it's difficult to assess. Based on the info you give, adding all this content, video, images, it could be that your page became a lot heavier to load (check the page on webpagetest.org and with pagespeed insights). May be you exaggerated a bit with the optimisation - and is Google considering the page a bit too spammy.

If possible, can you give the actual url of the page?

                rgds,

                Dirk

Should I apply Canonical Links from my Landing Pages to Core Website Pages?

I am working on an SEO project for the website: https://wave.com.au/ There are some core website pages, which we want to target for organic traffic, like this one: https://wave.com.au/doctors/medical-specialties/anaesthetist-jobs/ Then we have basically have another version that is set up as a landing page and used for CPC campaigns. https://wave.com.au/anaesthetists/ Essentially, my question is should I apply canonical links from the landing page versions to the core website pages (especially if I know they are only utilising them for CPC campaigns) so as to push link equity/juice across? Here is the GA data from January 1 - April 30, 2019 (Behavior > Site Content > All Pages😞

Home Page Disappears From Google - But Rest of Site Still Ranked

As title suggests we are running into a serious issue of the home page disapearing from Google search results whilst the rest of the site still remains. We search for it naturally cannot find a trace, then use a "site:" command in Google and still the home page does not come up. We go into web masters and inspect the home page and even Google states that the page is indexable. We then run the "Request Indexing" and the site comes back on Google. This is having a damaging affect and we would like to understand why this issue is happening. Please note this is not happening on just one of our sites but has happened to three which are all located on the same server. One of our brand which has the issue is: www.henweekends.co.uk

Will Reduced Bounce Rate, Increased Pages/Session, Increased Session Duration-RESULT IN BETTER RANKING?

Our relaunched website has a much lower bounce rate (66% before, now 58%) increased pages per session (1.89 before, now 3.47) and increased session duration (1:33 before, now 3:47). The relaunch was December 20th. Should these improvements result in an improvement in Google rank? How about in MOZ authority? We have not significantly changed the content of the site but the UX has been greatly improved. Thanks, Alan

What are best page titles for sub-domain pages?

Hi Moz communtity, Let's say a website has multiple sub-domains with hundreds and thousands of pages. Generally we will be mentioning "primary keyword & "brand name" on every page of website. Can we do same on all pages of sub-domains to increase the authority of website for this primary keyword in Google? Or it gonna end up as negative impact if Google consider as duplicate content being mentioned same keyword and brand name on every page even on website and all pages of sub domains? Thanks

Ranking 2 pages on the same domain in the same SERP

I thought it was generally said that Google will favour 1 page per domain for a particular SERP, but I have seen examples where that is not the case (i.e. Same domain is ranking 2 different pages on the 1st page of the SERPs...) Are there any "tricks" to taking up 2 first page SERP positions, or am I mistaken that this doesn't always happen?

Is it a problem to use a 301 redirect to a 404 error page, instead of serving directly a 404 page?

We are building URLs dynamically with apache rewrite.
When we detect that an URL is matching some valid patterns, we serve a script which then may detect that the combination of parameters in the URL does not exist. If this happens we produce a 301 redirect to another URL which serves a 404 error page, So my doubt is the following: Do I have to worry about not serving directly an 404, but redirecting (301) to a 404 page? Will this lead to the erroneous original URL staying longer in the google index than if I would serve directly a 404? Some context. It is a site with about 200.000 web pages and we have currently 90.000 404 errors reported in webmaster tools (even though only 600 detected last month).

Why does my home page show up in search results instead of my target page for a specific keyword?

I am using Wordpress and am targeting a specific keyword..and am using Yoast SEO if that question comes up.. and I am at 100% as far as what they recommend for on page optimization. The target html page is a "POST" and not a "Page" using Wordpress definitions. Also, I am using this Pinterest style theme here http://pinclone.net/demo/ - which makes the post a sort of "pop-up"  - but I started with a different theme and the results below were always the case..so I don't know if that is a factor or not. (I promise .. this is not a clever spammy attempt to promote their theme - in fact parts of it don't even work for me yet so I would not recommend it just yet...) I DO show up on the first page for my keyword.. however.. instead of Google showing the page www.mywebsite.com/this-is-my-targeted-keyword-page.htm Google shows www.mywebsite.com in the results instead. The problem being - if the traffic goes only to my home page.. they will be less likely to stay if they dont find what they want immediately and have to search for it.. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Should the sitemap include just menu pages or all pages site wide?

I have a Drupal site that utilizes Solr, with 10 menu pages and about 4,000 pages of content. Redoing a few things and we'll need to revamp the sitemap. Typically I'd jam all pages into a single sitemap and that's it, but post-Panda, should I do anything different?
