Google points of Interest / POI
-
Hello,
Looking for some guidance on how to appear and get listed in Google Points of Interest in the Search Engine Results Page.
Like when searching for "attractions Seattle" at the top of the SERP these listings appear.
Cannot seem to find some good resources on the topic as well.
Thanks
Conrad

Hi Miriam,
Thanks for the input. I will continue to look into this. I am amazed by the short amount of resources on this! In fact I was a bit perplexed as I thought I was searching with incorrect terms.
If I discover something of value will share it.
Thanks,
Conrad

Hi Ma Verónica,
Thanks for your help! Are you referring to the Local guide contributions in Google Maps app?
Thank you

Hi Conalt,
Nearly all of Google's documentation regarding POIs is for developers making maps and, to be honest, I feel it has been 5 or so years since I've last even seen a good discussion regarding the term 'points of interest'. There should be more discussion of this, as clearly, this is still highly featured in searches like the one you cited. You might look here for more information: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topicsearchin/maps/points$20of$20interest
My guess is that what Google chooses to show in these types of searches is algorithmic, but what that algo may be, I have no resources to point out. So sorry, and if you're setting yourself the task of learning about this, it would be wonderful if you'd share what you learn with our community.

Hi,
The best easy way to do it, is by using the Google Maps app on you phone, and the essential information, including the exact location.
The process might take up to five minutes.https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/map-maker/UEN0wxhj6Rs
Although, you have to understand that Google Points of Interest are manually curated. Therefore, it will take time before it is accepted as a point of interest, if so.
Ma Verónica

Google My Business - Service Area - Use Zip Codes or City Names?
Google allows you to choose up to 20 locations as service areas, and you can choose based on cities, counties, or zip codes. I'm trying to determine if zip codes, cities, or counties are better to select for our GMB profiles. We are located in the US. I am thinking it's best to use all 20 areas allowed on a profile as long as they are relevant, generally giving Google all the info they will let you provide is best. I also am leaning toward using zip codes because it also includes the city when you choose by zip code. For example: Entered the zip code 21009 and the service area selection provided was: Abingdon, MD 21009, USA Entering the city/state returns a selection of Abingdon, MD, USA I also think it may have to do with how people search and find your business as well? Does anyone have experience with this? Best practices? My google searching has not turned up any reliable info.

Issue in "Suggest an Edit" feature of Google My Business
"Suggest an Edit" feature of Google My Business is allowing the competitors to change your business details, that too without your prior permission! I have put together a piece on the issue we faced and you can review the same here: https://www.kvrwebtech.com/blog/issue-in-suggest-an-edit-in-google-my-business-is-it-a-bug-or-a-major-pitfall/ What are your thoughts on the same and what should be the right solution?

How do you go about updating / correcting bad business listings when you cannot contact the website directly?
There is a business listing I wish to correct / update on 411dir.biz There is no way to contact the website online, and in cases like this, I try to do a whois lookup, and reach out via the email / phone number there. This site seems impossible to connect with, has anybody else come up against situations like this in the past, if so what do you tell your client / what other approaches do people have? Thanks!

Does Google Penalize for Hiding Address?
I have a situation where a client is working out of their home. I know that Google does not like when you list a business with a home address so we have hidden the address on Google, but are wondering if Google penalizes businesses for hiding it? When listing them to other directories we do our best to find ones that we can hide the first line of the address. But does that matter? Should we just be listing to our normal directories with the address visible? Does a mix of hidden addresses and visible ones hurt your rankings? Thanks in advance for your help!

Description on Google+ & ALL Citations the same or?
Does it matter if the description is different on Google local and all the citation websites? Some websites allow a lot of description, some don't. So my question is it only the company name+address that needs to be the same across the board or the description has to be the same too?

Competitor outranking me on google with their yelp, facebook and youtube pages
I'm working to rank for a local search term (my city wedding photographers). I'm frustrated that my competitor is outranking me not with their website (they are no. #9 and I'm #6) but with their Yelp account (#1) Facebook Account (#5) and Youtube account (#7 - not outranking me, but right below me). I'm going to continue working on my SEO to hopefully get higher up, but even then, they are basically dominating page 1 with their links. It gets worse on page 2. They are showing up 5 times for youtube/vimeo videos, and 1 time with a spammy landing page with no images, full of keyword anchored links to their main site. What gives? Since when are social media profiles outranking local sites on google organic searches? Could it be that our keyword is just so low competition that google has allowed all this stuff to rank so highly?

Are citations the way to go even if there is no Google Places listing
If there are no Google Places / Local listing for a keyword search term, for example... "web design vancouver", do building citations still help in enabling websites to move up the organic rankings?
