Best five links to get first for a new website
-
I wondered if people had a list of the top five or ten links you should build for a new website in order to add some sense of authority.
For example should a new website start with key social media websites such as Twitter, Google+ and Linkedin ?
Or top level directories such as BOTW and DMOZ?
Should they local for niche website directories in their location or vertical?
If you had to choose five links - free or paid which would they be?
-
Yes, a new website should claim its brand name on social media immediately, whether or not that improves its rankings. If you don't get your @companyname, someone else will.
-
I'd say a DMOZ link is worth applying for but not worth a bead of sweat if you don't get accepted/moderated.
It's the overall variety of a link profile that counts. If you get links naturally you'll have a mix of follow and nofollow, URL-match, branded, non-branded anchor text and some keyword match thrown in, homepage links and deep links, social and non-social...
I like the phrase "If Google did not exist but the Internet did, where would you get links?"
In answer to your original question, I agree with Doug. if you're offering a product it's a good idea to offer it to influential bloggers that your target audience visits for free, in return for an unbiased review and link. But if you're just starting out don't go for the biggest bloggers as they probably get inundated. If your product is great the most influential will pick up on it through some of the 'smaller' blogs.

Thanks Doug I think its important to remember that links can send traffic as well as improve rankings. I was just wondered if DMOZ is that important for rankings anymore?.
Do we think that Google has a check list that it uses to judge the "legitimacy" of a website by the fact that it would pay for a link on something like BOTW and that it has accounts on the main social media channels.

My recommendation is to think about where your target audience / customers gather. You want to be where they are. This is going to vary greatly depending on your market/niche. Look for authoritative link opportunities from sites relevant to the website you're trying to promote.
An entry in a local directory is great for local tradesmen, but not so good for enterprise level business consultants.
Do your customers care that you're in DMOZ? Would they be interested in a review in a trade journal about the benefits your service/product can bring to their business?
Remember it's not just about links to improve rankings, it's about attracting relevant traffic to the site. So links that also get you direct traffic are also a win!

Other websites copy content and giving a link back
Hi, I've just noticed a few back links in Google Search Console, I was excited. But when I saw the backlinks, 2 other websites that had completely copied my content and then gave a backlink to my website. Is this bad for SEO and would google penalise my website for this?

What are he benefits of getting 200+ links from DA 40+ non-relevant websites?
I have a client who has an opportunity to sponsor a prestigious national organisation. In return, they will get 200+ links from the websites of the organisation's members. Most of which are DA 40+.None of the linking sites have any relevance to my client's industry.1) How likely do you think it is that Google will view these as paid links?2) Do you feel that there is potential harm in gaining this many non-relevant links in a short time-frame?3) The client wants me to quantify the ranking benefits of gaining these links and calculate a potential ROI. If that's even possible, how would you go about that? Thanks in advance

Submit new list of links to be disavowed
I had a question and I am hoping that some one on this community will be able to help clarify. We went through a link removal and disavow process last year. If we see more unnatural links showing up in our link profile and we want to disavow those links, what should be included in the new list of links that need to be disavowed: Only new links or domains Old list that was disavowed + new list that needs to be disavowed Thank you in advance for your help.

More than one link on an external website
Just wanted to clarify my understanding of this... I'm of the understanding that if an external site has more than one link going to your site, then it is only the one link that passes value. If this is the case.... Which is the link that passes value (i.e the first link established or the link that, all factors being considered, is the most valuable for passing authority?) If a second link established on an external website comes from and goes to a different webpage than the first (and is done for the purposes of targeting and boosting a different keyword category/theme), is this then a beneficial practice? If multiple links on an external website all serve to generate solid referral traffic, will this boost rankings, and thereby be a sound practice? Thanks in advance for your help in clarifying this for me!

What tool can be used to provide a list of links on a website that points to other websites?
For example: On a website there are items in the news listing that point to articles about a company that appear on online news sites; items that point to collateral hosted by vendors we use, etc. What tool can be used to provide a list of these links?

Footer Links And Link Juice
I'm starting to learn about link juice and notice in GWMT > Traffic > Internal Links, that the list is in this order by the links counted on each page. Some are in the footer and some are in the header, with some being more important than others commercially i.e. /register /privacy /terms /search /sitemap /disclaimer /blog /register So I am wondering if I should add a 'no-follow' attribute to the footer links i.e. privacy, terms, disclaimer and leave the others as they are? Does this help retain link juice on each page where the links appear? Or am I missing the point all together? This is my website: http://goo.gl/CN0e5

I mean, it is free adding the url in the directory but if they lwant to be in the directory they have to ink to a website we have decided.
