Self-referencing hyperlinks ( <a>tags) are pretty much pointless for SEO and in general</a>
<a>For specific sets of Meta links (like hreflangs or canonical tags) - self-referencing URLs are often a requirement and are part of SEO best practice</a>

I personally always like to think "Is this link useful" before answering a question. If a link is the copy of a page and helps the user go to the top of the article, then it may be beneficial. But in theory, "internal links" which in a way this is, are useful to help define site structure of a site. A page linking to itself generally won't be useful to either the reader or the search engine. That isn't to say that it won't provide some ranking value. I haven't done much testing with pointing a link to the page that it's on vs a different page on the domain. My guess, is that if it does have any factor, it's incredibly small. The link should be useful to the reader in that it helps them find out more information in regards to what they are reading. The link should also be useful to the search engine in that it helps define the structure of the overall website. Those are pretty much my go to rules for links on my site. If it doesn't help, it doesn't go on my page.

International Domains for SEO
My company is international and we have websites for each country with Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLD). I am in the US and I am seeing that other countries such as Costa Rica and Germany are ranking above us in search results. I thought Google automatically geo-targeted users by default and therefore I should only get .com or US results. Any idea why other countries would rank above our site?

How important is it to create a subdomain?
I was just reading an article about how Hubpages claims they pulled through from Panda by dividing their content up on subdomains. I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar success? Also, Panda aside, how important do you think it is to separate different types of content out on separate subdomains?

Increasing Internal Links But Avoiding a Link Farm
I'm looking to create a page about Widgets and all of the more specific names for Widgets we sell: ABC Brand Widgets, XYZ Brand Widgets, Big Widgets, Small Widgets, Green Widgets, Blue Widgets, etc. I'd like my Widget page to give a brief explanation about each kind of Widget with a link deeper into my site that gives more detail and allows you to purchase. The problem is I have a lot of Widgets and this could get messy: ABC Green Widgets, Small XYZ Widgets, many combinations. I can see my Widget page teetering on being a link farm if I start throwing in all of these combos. So where should I stop? How much do I do? I've read more than 100 links on a page being considered a link farm, is that a hardline number or a general guideline?

Expiring URL seo
a buddy of mine is running a niche job board and is having issues with expiring URLs. we ruled it out cuz a 301 is meant to be used when the content has moved to another page, or the page was replaced. We were thinking that we'd be just stacking duplicate content on old urls that would never be 'replaced'. Rather they have been removed and will never come back. So 410 is appropriate but maybe we overlooked something. any ideas?
