Unlike a blog, classified sites tend to sell items that eventually are no longer available, and it's almost every page on the site that works like that (except category pages for example)

We have 2 options at the moment:

    • We keep the old ad urls. Note that these urls won't be linked from on the site anymore. They will technically only exist in Google's index. When someone comes through to them, they are present with a suggested replacement ad that is currently available. So 5 years from now, most of the "indexed" pages on the site that google sends traffic to will be these pages that simply tell you about another ad. Not nice, but so many classifieds are doing it like this.
    • 301 the deleted/sold/expired ads to a relevant existing ad. Might have scenarios resulting in soft-404s.

Both have pro's and con's, but any further insight into the matter will be great!

If I had a site like that I would eliminate the individual ad pages and have much longer-tail ad categories.  Then the category pages would each have multiple ads, most recent at the top, and expiring ads at the bottom.

That puts much more substantive content on every page of the site, more potential keyword matches per page, more ranking power per page.

I honestly see your point, and understand both sides of the dillema.

As long as the replacement ad is highly relevant, and you are already ranking well for the expired ad, you could leave it in place. Ebay is known for doing this, in which an indexed ad is left in place, and you are shown relevant ads like the expired one. This is a risk you are taking. What you don't want to happen is have your users get frustrated by constantly seeing expired ads. I'm betting most people will come to the site by searching, and not by an internal link. You don't want to be known as the company that sells ads, not products.

Morally, no its not right. You should only have an ad for an item that exist, but yes, this method does work, and often.

Google listing only appears when I move / zoom in or out of the map

Hi everyone, We are having an issue with this local business. The Google listing isn't immediately appearing on the map. You have to move the map or zoom in and out for the listing to appear. I find this really odd as our competitors - with no reviews and way further in proximity - are appearing with no issues. The listing is only about 4km where I'm doing the search, while competitors with no reviews are about 20km away. We are ranking in the top 5 organically for the search term I used (pool renovations brisbane), but nowhere in local unless the map is moved. When the listing appears, sometimes the pin also looks grey instead of red, while others are red (if that makes sense). On top of this, their organic rankings have also been on a downward trend since June. I'm currently doing a backlink audit to see if it's contributing to the issue. If anyone also has other ideas, could you please let me know? Thanks.

Google points of Interest / POI

Hello, Looking for some guidance on how to appear and get listed in Google Points of Interest in the Search Engine Results Page. Like when searching for "attractions Seattle" at the top of the SERP these listings appear. Cannot seem to find some good resources on the topic as well. Thanks Conrad

Multiple language in site links on SERP

hi there guys! I have this client that sells roofing reparation. His site is in two languages. In this image here, the green square are the results in english and red square in french. The picture is from a english SERP. What would you guys do to make sure that the SERP shows the right language to users on Google? It is very important for us to have both language separated. Our region is bilingual so, it's a big problem! The original language of the site is in french and I don't have any problem with this version. But when i checked the english side, there is this problem... mixing language in the SERP is not very good for my ROI. Thanks guys!  toiture2.png

How do you go about updating / correcting bad business listings when you cannot contact the website directly?

There is a business listing I wish to correct / update on 411dir.biz There is no way to contact the website online, and in cases like this, I try to do a whois lookup, and reach out via the email / phone number there. This site seems impossible to connect with, has anybody else come up against situations like this in the past, if so what do you tell your client / what other approaches do people have? Thanks!

Do Citation Count As Backlinks / Referring Domains

I listed clients listed on about 200+ local citation sites and was NAP complaint. However, when I run a backlink checker using MOZ, SEMRUSH, etc it only show 8 -12 and none of them are the citations. Anyone have any pointers?

NPA. Adding two new locations. What phone numbers to use?

Hi everyone, Our client wants to add two new locations. Not sure what phone number to use.
We have main phone 800 number, with no adders associated, and local phone numbers for locations which we do SEO for. New two locations are not for SEO purposes. Client just want them to be listed on website and on major directories for now. Understanding NPA importance:
Should we use main 800 for both locations?
Should we get new phone numbers for each one? Thanks

How to find which directories to submit my new site?

Hi Guys So as I'm just starting out, I have been told and read certain blogs that in the early stages I should submit my site to certain directories, only I would not have any idea which directories I should submit my site to, besides the few that I already know. Any idea how I could find this out? Cheers

Adding multiple locations business to directories

          We have multiple locations business.
Adding each location business info to directories. There are same services and everything for each location. Should we keep the same description for all listings or different for each location?
Should we indicate Home Page URL (with 800 number, no address in footer) or location URL?
