Should I block Map pages with robots.txt?
-
Hello,
I have a website that was started in 1999. On the website I have map pages for each of the offices listed on my site, for which there are about 120. Each of the 120 maps is in a whole separate html page. There is no content in the page other than the map. I know all of the offices love having the map pages so I don't want to remove the pages.
So, my question is would these pages with no real content be hurting the rankings of the other pages on our site? Therefore, should I block the pages with my robots.txt? Would I also have to remove these pages (in webmaster tools?) from Google for blocking by robots.txt to really work?
I appreciate your feedback, thanks!

Thanks Adam, for the feedback and suggestions. Have a nice day!

Hello!
I would definitely suggest disallowing these pages from being indexed in your robots file. These 120 pages will be considered duplicate content, and will most likely will also be duplicate titles and meta descriptions. Duplicates of any kind is a huge SEO problem.
Once you edit your robots file, you will not need to do anything in your webmaster tools. The site will be crawled according to your robots file.
Another idea… depending on your URL structure, you may be able to use canonical tags to stop multiple pages that are seen as duplicates from being crawled. That way you won't have to completely stop the indexing of these pages by disallowing them through the robots file.
Hope that helps!

If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect?
If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect? If this scenario requires a 301 redirect no matter what, I might as well update the URL to be a little more keyword rich for the page while I'm at it. However, since these pages are ranking well I'd rather not lose any authority in the process and keep the URL just stripped of the ".html" (if that's possible). Thanks for you help! What can be the cause of my inner pages ranking higher than my home page?
If you do a search for my own company name or products we sell the inner pages rank higher than the homepage and if you do a search for exact content from my home page my home page doesn't show in the results. My homepage shows when you do a site: search so not sure what is causing this.

Page not being indexed
Hi all, On our site we have a lot of bookmaker reviews, and we are ranking pretty good for most bookmaker names as keywords, however a single bookmaker seems to have been shunned by Google. For a search "betsafe" in Denmark, this page does not appear among the top 50: http://www.betxpert.com/bookmakere/betsafe All of our other review pages rank in top 10-20 for the bookmaker name as keyword. What to do if Google has "banned" a page? Best regards, Rasmus

Cache my page
So I need to get this page cached: http://www.flowerpetal.com/index.jsp?info=13 It's been 4-5 months since uploaded. Now it's linked to from the homepage of a PR5 site. I've tweeted that link 10 times, facebooked, stumbled, linked to it from other articles and still nothing. And I submitted the url to google twice. Any thoughts? Thanks Tyler

Does RogerBot read URL wildcards in robots.txt
I believe that the Google and Bing crawlbots understand wildcards for the "disallow" URL's in robots.txt - does Roger?
