Can I set a canonical tag to an anchor link?
-
I have a client who is moving to a one page website design. So, content from the inner pages is being condensed in to sections on the 'home' page. There will be a navigation that anchor links to each relevant section. I am wondering if I should leave the old pages and use rel=canonical to point them to their relevant sections on the new 'home' page rather than 301 them. Thoughts?

Hi Billy,
I read through your question and it appears it's been 6 months since this post. I wondered how things were going here?
Did you effectively canonicalize your old pages to your new URLs with Anchor Links?
We may be in the process of doing the same thing so just wanted to ask for an update on your outcome?
Thanks

For anyone who may care - this appears to have worked out really well. So far way better than expected. Very competitive market and we are on page 1 for most of our most important phrasing.... cool.

Yeah, trust me, I have strongly advised against it. They don't use us for design, just marketing, and the company they use for design (while, admittedly, very, very good) was almost done with this before we were brought in to the loop about the redesign. Down the road I hope to convince them to add more pages etc... but for now this is what I have to work with. I am hoping the rel=canonical will take care of the duplicate content issues while perhaps giving a bit more authority to the content sections of the one page design. This is something I have not done before, however, and I wanted to bounce it off my peers. Thank you for the response! I'll come back and post how it goes in a few months.

I would approach this issue with the following:
- I would strongly advice the client against it. This move will hamper the SEO efforts that they're paying for, and they could easily lose 30-60% of their organic traffic. Can they afford this loss?
- If they still insist on doing this, then I think I would keep the old pages as you described. But then that'll give you duplicate issues etc.

Our clients Magento 2 site has lots of obsolete categories. Advice on SEO best practice for setting server level redirects so I can delete them?
Our client's Magento website has been running for at least a decade, so has a lot of old legacy categories for Brands they no longer carry. We're looking to trim down the amount of unnecessary URL Redirects in Magento, so my question is: Is there a way that is SEO efficient to setup permanent redirects at a server level (nginx) that Google will crawl to allow us at some point to delete the categories and Magento URL Redirects? If this is a good practice can you at some point then delete the server redirects as google has marked them as permanent?

Does Google read dynamic canonical tags?
Does Google recognize rel=canonical tag if loaded dynamically via javascript? Here's what we're using to load: <script> //Inject canonical link into page head if (window.location.href.indexOf("/subdirname1") != -1) { canonicalLink = window.location.href.replace("/kapiolani", ""); } if (window.location.href.indexOf("/subdirname2") != -1) { canonicalLink = window.location.href.replace("/straub", ""); } if (window.location.href.indexOf("/subdirname3") != -1) { canonicalLink = window.location.href.replace("/pali-momi", ""); } if (window.location.href.indexOf("/subdirname4") != -1) { canonicalLink = window.location.href.replace("/wilcox", ""); } if (canonicalLink != window.location.href) { var link = document.createElement('link'); link.rel = 'canonical'; link.href = canonicalLink; document.head.appendChild(link); } script>

Canonical versus 301 for affilaite links
Affiliate links for the Volusion ecommerce shops are of the form mydomain.com/?Click=XX where XX is the affiliate ID. Volusion uses rel=canonical to redirect the affiliate links to mydomain.com. Is this a good solution? I used iDevAffiliate for another online store, and their solution was to use 301 redirects to trip off the ? string. Comments? Best,

Remove Links or 301
Howdy Guys, Our main site has been hit pretty hard by penguin and we are just wondering what steps we should now take. For the past 2 months we have been working through our back link profile removing spammy / un-natural links, we have documented everything in a spreadsheet... We recently submitted a reconsideration request to Google and they have now responded saying we still have bad links. I'm just wondering would be it easier just to 301 redirect our site to another TLD we have for our main site? Or Do we keep working through our links 1 by 1 and removing them? Has anyone had any success in 301ing? Thanks, Scott

Link Building Stragedy can anyone please give me advice
my site is www.in2town.co.uk Hi i hear a lot about having a linking structure in place and a linking stragedy but i am not really sure what i need to do even though i have spent months reading about it. What i have been trying to do is to link as many of the pages within my site to the home page and i am now looking at linking pages in my site to around my site to different pages, just like <cite>en.wikipedia.org</cite> So when i have a story on cheryl cole, i will make sure that i link from that story to another story i have on cheryl cole etc. But i would like to know what else i need to do. For my home page i want to rank for the following keywords Lifestyle magazine Lifestyle news celebrity news celebrity gossip showbiz news soap spoilers I would also love suggestions for other keywords i should be aiming for, for the home page. I find it hard as my site is a magazine site, so i do not have many places to put a description of each page of the site, so i would love some help on this and advice what i can do to let google know what my site is about. If anyone can help with putting a linking stragedy in place and what things i should be doing to increase my ranking for important keywords, then that would be great many thanks

Google showing former meta tags in search results inspite of new tags being crawled by it
I had changed the meta tags for a site www.aztexsodablast.com.au about a month back and Google has also crawled those new tags but in search results when I search for the term 'Aztex Sodablast' it is continuing to show the old tags while on the site, the new tags are being displayed. What may be the issue and how could I correct the problem?

I am seeing with Webmaster Tools that Google is trying to follow the text based truncated URL from SuperPages despite the fact that they are not in an anchor tag.
