Search volume discrepancies between keyword tools
-
I'm feeling like I'm basing all my research time on tools that I cannot necessarily trust.
Between Google keyword planner, Keywords everywhere chrome extension, and Moz keyword explorer, I'm getting wildly different results on 2 simple keywords related to colleges with baking & pastry arts degrees.
"baking college", "baking colleges"
So Keyword planner won't give me any search volume for those 2 words, I don't even see them in the results. Instead, it decides I really meant "baker college" which has 33,100 global searches. I tried telling it use only closely related terms, but it keeps giving me "baker college" and refuses to show me the terms I asked for. Stubbornly useless.
Keywords everywhere says both of these keywords bring in 33,100 searches. It does not tell me those searches were for "baker college." Totally misleading.
Moz keyword explorer says baking college as 0-10 volume, baking colleges has 101-200 volume. So at least it's not trying to give me "baker college" numbers. Perhaps I can trust this, but it's not convenient to upload hundreds of various keywords at a time to pull the volume numbers like I do with the other tools.
With Keyword planner making assumptions and grouping unrelated terms together, and Keywords everywhere using those numbers without pointing out the assumptions, I feel like I can't trust anything without taking time to dig into the discrepancies, which is impossible with hundreds of keywords.
Do you know of any good search volume tools that don't force or hide assumptions?
Thanks.

Hi there,
Thanks for the question! I can certainly speak to Keyword Explorer's numbers and how we arrived there. We use a number of sources for our volume data, including Keyword Planner, but oftentimes you will see large discrepancies because our data goes through a disambiguation process. As you noticed, Google Keyword Planner currently bundles similar keywords into one overall volume metric. Most people want specific data rather than a grouped number, so we strive to separate out the individual keyword volumes. You can read more about that here: https://moz.com/blog/google-keyword-unplanner-clickstream-data-to-the-rescue
The trouble is that often times you will have one keyword that is responsible for upwards of 95% of the traffic. So, when the data is separated out, it makes the less-trafficked keywords look suspiciously low when in fact their traffic volume is more accurate in our tool.
We have a few additional articles that discuss our volume data compared to Keyword Planner:

I hope that helps clarify things!

German blog post with mutated vowel. Page optimization says keyword is not used.
Hey guys! I'm trying to optimize for a keyword that includes a mutated vowel (ä for example). In the URL I simply put it as ae (which most sites that I checked do). For whatever reason it says the keyword is not used on the site at all - which isn't true. Is this a known problem? Haven't found anything in the forums. Thanks for the help. Florian

Keyword Lists - Omitting Keywords
I've had trouble adding keywords to Keyword Lists - specifically when I add a large list of keywords (400+), and only 50 or 75 keywords are analyzed. Is there a reason this happens?

Sudden drop in ranking for keyword. Might i have a penalty?
I redesigned two websites last year www.studiowest.com and www.tracsd.com and didn't suffer any drop in rankings. About a month ago we redesigned again but this time merged the two sites into one, www.studiowest.com. All was well and we were #1 ranked for "recording studio san diego" UNTIL today. (Suddenly we are off the front page at #12. We are still in the 3 pack from my view.) I'm trying to figure out what happened. We did 301 redirects. Could I have been penalized? I'm trying to work on my Google Business pages, there were too many, maybe that affected it? What's the best way to check if I'm penalized or otherwise figure out what happened?

Moz Pro Question: Does the amount of keywords you are allowed to search reset each month?
I am a Moz Pro subscriber and I really love the new Keyword Explorer tool. One question I have that I couldn't find a clear answer was regarding the number of monthly keyword queries. Do they reset each month? I hope they do.

Is there a tool that works like crawl test that allows more than 3000 pages?
I enjoy using crawl test inside moz but I need to find a way to crawl all the pages on a site. It would probably be in the neighborhood of 10,000 urls. Does anyone know of a free tool and if not is there a paid tool that will do this?

Keyword Rankings vs. Rank Tracker research tool
I have a campaign tracking several keywords. On my Keyword Rankings report I'm not in the top 50 for anything. When I use the Rank Tracker tool, my rankings are quite high (I have 2 in the top 5). When I use the Rank Tracker tool I've noticed that I'm able to point to specific URLs on my website (not the main page). When looking on my Keyword Rankings report, the URL is usually empty. So what am I missing? Have I configured something incorrectly? Can I update the URLs on the Keyword Rankings report so the rankings will be reflective of the Rank Tracker tool? OSQdLmb nMnOQim
