What is a Class C Subnet and why should I care?
-
So I did a site analysis over at Majestic SEO and it told me that I have 100 Referring IP addresses and 92 are Class C subnets. What does this mean? Are they good, bad or irrelevant?
-
Pretty much all hosting companies offer dedicated ips but they are likely to be of the same class C subnet as ips are bought in blocks.
-
Any good hosting companies out there that help with offering the option to have each domain hosted on a different IP? I have only seen http://www.seohosting.com/ by host gator (I think).
-
I feel that the IP of links is a fairly low ranking factor. But if all of your links were coming from the same IP then your site would be throwing up some red flags.
-
I agree with this. The closer the IP addresses between sites that link to each other the more likely they are that the two sites have a relationship. Not that this is bad, it's just that links that you get from your relationships are usually easier to get than those that are freely and naturally given, so they discount them.
-
Class C refers to the third set of numbers in an IP.
AAA.BBB.CCC.DDDIf all the links came from the same C subnet, they're 'likely' less trusted.
The 'theory' (calling it a theory because i don't think its ever really been proven) is that multiple links from the same C subnet are less valuable because its likely that they come from an owner of multiple websites.
I wouldn't label them as 'bad'
But if you're link building, it's probably a good idea to get links from different subnets

Ratio of linking C-blocks to Linking domains
Hi, Our linkbuilding efforts have resulted in acquiring a high number of backlinks from domains within a C-block. We all know Google issues penalties whenever someone's link profile looks unnatural. A high number of backlinks but a low number of linking C-blocks would seem to be one of reasons to get penalized. Example: we have 6,000 links from 200 linking root domains coming in from 100 C-blocks. At what point should we start to worry about being penalized/giving off an unnatural look to mr G?

While SEOMoz currently can tell us the number of linking c-blocks, can SEOMoz tell us what the specific c-blocks are?
I know it is important to have a diverse set of c-blocks, but I don't know how it is possible to have a diverse set if I can't find out what the c-blocks are in the first place. Also, is there a standard for domain linking c-blocks? For instance, I'm not sure if a certain amount is considered "average" or "above-average."

The sites are on seperate domains one is UK and one is .com They have their own IP's however have both have the same C Block... We have noticed that when the rankings for one site improves the other drops.... Could the C Block be causing this?

Does it matter if browse.php?c= is in product ulrs
Hi Long time reader 1st time questionairer (is that even a word?) Anyway I have started working for a company on a project and as I am in house they obviously throw everything they can at me. Todays question was about the seo friendliness for one of their sites http://www.angellovenails.com/newsite I am going through and finding better keywords for categories and pages. I know that there are pages with 200+ outbound links which need fixing. My question is about the url structure The product on this page is nail feathers, the url is http://www.angellovenails.com/newsite/browse.php?c=angelwingnailfeathers No matter what page of products you go to it includes browse.php?c= For seo purposes is this going to be a problem? I appreciate that we (which means me I think) will be adding content to the pages and the product names could be more keyword friendly. But I have no clue if we need to do something about the browse.php bit or not. Thanks for any help Paul Forcey

Relocating to a C-level domain: Google Newsmaps & pagejuice
A client wants to relocate the majority of his niche news site, www.example.com, into a c-level domain on the same domain (news.example.com). Right now, almost all the articles are populating in Google News and generating traffic, thanks to the site's age, content and its newsmap. With the relocation, 80% of the files pulled into Google News, will now be news.example.com/tech/article-sample, as opposed to how they have been historically, www.example.com/tech/article-sample. Will that break Google News auto submission process, hurt their google news positioning, and require them to reapply for consideration? Secondly, a good chunk of landing pages (30+) and articles (3-4k) will be relocated to the new news.example.com domain. Everything after the .com/ will of course remain the same, but the c-level will be new so essentially, a new URL. I know that redirecting will lose some pagejuice, but since its a c-level, its going to be basically like moving the urls to a brand new domain?

Does Google care how you write internal links?
I am changing ecommerce platforms. For my internal linking on the old site there was a lot of old links written like this: http://www.domain.com/page-name But now i am writing links mostly like this: /page-name Will that make a difference to search engines? Is one easier than the other for them to interpret?
