A subdomain or a new domain?
-
Hi all
Mind it I pick some of your brains for a second opinion on something....
The current situation is thus: I have a fashion website which has over 10,000 free articles and videos, support forums with thousands of posts and user blogs. Also on the site is an affiliate store which is built using datafeedr. The store has about 90,000 products from hundreds of retailers. The goal of the site being a one stop fashion community site where people can get information, chat with other fashion fans and then use the store to search all the fashion sites at once.
The problem I am having is despite endless seo work it is proving very difficult to rank the domain for even terms with low competition (We are used to ranking our clients for very competitive terms, often with several hundred million competitors including government websites, bbc, wiki etc). After testing we have come to the conclusion that it's the duplicate content in the store which is hindering our progress. Despite the exact layout of the store being unique, there is no original content on the product pages.
There, we have decided to remove the store from the current url and on to it's own site. The question we have is would putting it on store.domain.com still hinder the main site? I recall reading that google are considering the subdomains and root domain as one these days, or if we were to put it on samedomainname.net would google then consider us to be sending users to another website?
From a branding point of view I would favour the store.domain.com approach but the .net approach could be easier.
Finally, if we were to move the store we have about 45,000 pages indexed which would all return 404's so I guess it would be best to set up 301 redirects from the old url to the new?
Many thanks

Ha, I agree, though I think it gradually starts skewing in one direction.

Thanks for the opinions everyone. After careful consideration of this and on the other thread I posted about my tights website the other day I have decided upon a complete redesign of both sites. Still using wordpress!
The affiliate stores will be dropped from both sites and instead moved to a .net domain. The .net version of the site is design not to rank in the search engines as it will be 1005 duplicate content. If it does rank, then bonus. The design of the .net will be more or less identical to the .com site, save different menus.
The .com will change from being an affiliate store with some articles and videos tacked on to try and provide some unique content, to being a place with 100% unique content. They will still have 1,000s of unique articles and videos and forum, but this they will server just as a community section and to promote the store. This approach will then allow detailed review on specific product ranges; for example, article on why red tights would be good this winter followed by a promotion of the store where the user can find all the red tights from all the retailers.
This narrowed approach will have great seo benefits too as it will allow me to rank specific pages of the site for specific keywords rather than trying to rank the general homepage for everything.
Thanks for making me question my whole approach. While my seo company moves with the time and is very successful, my marketing company is still stuck in a pre panda frame of mind where it was easy to take a merchants datafeed, put it on your own site and be ranking at the top of google 48 hours later.

If it was a windows server, i could of written the rule for you,
yes time consuming, rrom for error, and you will lose some ranking from 301 link juice leaks. but beter to do it now then next year
-
There is a lack of consensus in that thread... so what you read becomes less important than what you decide to believe.

You may find some helpful comments on a discussion I started last week. We were in a situation where we are starting a new video/content blog with issues putting it on the root. Finally made the decision to move to a platform that allows us more flexibility with this (for this and other reason).
http://www.seomoz.org/q/a-blog-structure-dilemma-we-re-facing
-
yes I will be using the same structure. The site will be an exact copy so instead of being domain.com/store it will be domain.net/store so easily enough to set up the redirects I think, just time consuming.
The server is unix. Was a directadmin system now a cpanel system
-
Well if you are keeping the link structure it would easy.
you easly do somthing like replace oldomain.com/folder to newdomain.com
What sort of server are you using?
-
thanks for swift reply. I agree with you about the notion of sub domains being seen more like sub folders.
The only trouble i have is that my store has well over 50,000 backlinks in webmaster tools. While it wouldn't be the end of the world to lose these links, it would be nice if I could redirect as much of the link power as possible.
-
Many say that sub domains are sperate, but i have never seen any evidence for this. i have used subdomains and find that they act just as sub-folders. Matt Cutts has said using sub-folders of sub-domain is a matter of personal chioce.
But many people have been moving their duplicate content to subdomains to aviod the panda update effect. I have no idea if this works to protect the root domain long term or at all, it just may take time for google to find it and call it as duplicate again.
i would go with the .net myself, why risk it, time is money.
As for the 301's, if you are keeping the same site structure then you can ddo this with one 301 redirect, if not I would go to WMT and find the pages with incomming links and 301 those pages only, there is nothing to gain from 301ing pages with no links. Ok maybe someone has a url bookmarked and may not find your new site, but it not too likly thats going to be a big problem

Person using expired domain and its links to drive traffic
Hi, I know about people using expired domains to drive juice to their primary site but what about people using AN expired domain as their primary site (totally changing that site into a trashy affiliate-marketing vehicle)? The site I'm looking at is thegunzone.com. It has, according to Semrush, almost 38K links. It used to be a legit 17-year-old firearms hobby site, and this is what it originally looked like: http://web.archive.org/web/20120213184627/http://thegunzone.com:80/ Here is its last page before it closed and the domain purchased by the affiliate marketer: http://web.archive.org/web/20170315084035/http://www.thegunzone.com/ It closed around February of 2017, and some affiliate marketer bought it and all its backlinks. However, all those backlinks, which were previously to various articles, are now directed back to those articles (which don't exist anymore) but the homepage, including Wikipedia links. Here's an example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygonal_rifling At the bottom, in the 7th Reference, there's a link to an article called " "Learning About Shooting . . ." but if you click on the original link, it just goes to thegunzone.com homepage. Again, the site's totally different. And there are just thousands of such backlinks to former articles that don't exist anymore but are redirected to this schlocky site's homepage (and it's passing its juice through too). My question is this: this cannot be kosher with Google backlinking policies, right? Is this prevalent on the internet? Why hasn't thegunzone.com been found out and its rankings penalized yet? And how do I report him? I see tons of other sites using this basic strategy too on search results with various hunting keywords. (Disclosure: I do own a hunting/firearms blog, but I don't do any backlinking at all.) Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Does Google look at Domain Registrar owner information when counting links into a site?
Question: If the domain registrar owner info is the same on two websites, will Google/other search engines discredit any linking between the two sites when calculating page rank? We have two company sites. One is our main ecommerce domain which we have been linking into from information domains in the past. We recently cut ties with the company that hosted them for us and wish to host them ourselves to preserve the inbound traffic. We are worried, however, that the traffic will be discredited now that we own both domains. Thanks for looking!

Best way to start affiliate marketing a new mens magazine website?
I have just started up a new mens magazine website featuring articles, videos, sports news and photos to help drive traffic to the website. I write all the articles myself and do the social media updates in my spare time. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on the best way to start doing affiliate marketing for a new website? I was inspired to do this by successful internet marketers who make a passive income off their websites. So far I have added Amazon and William Hill as affiliate links as I think my target market will be looking for these types of product links. Also, for anyone who has experience in this, how long it taken for your blog to become successful and make money? Many thanks, Alex

Understanding Sub-domains
I have a questions about creating a website network for affiliate marketing purposes and how to achieve the best SEO rankings for each site. An example would be MLB(dot)com. MLB(dot)com is the hub site, with what appears to be official site sub-domains for each Major League Baseball team. If I were to create a website for every baseball team, would it be best to create each site individually and link them together? or should each site be a sub-domain of a hub site?

Affilate Programs on Subdomains
Hello SEO Community! We are launching an affiliate program and for CMS flexibility the preferred, development solution, is putting the affiliate program on a subdomain. Financial incentive affiliate programs "don't pass link value." Lets pretend they do for this situation 🙂 Here is the example: company website= example.com affilate website= affiliate.example.com Proposed affilate program: affilate.example.com/12345 -->301 redirects --> example.com There are multiple business services so sometimes the 301 redirect looks like this: affilate.example.com/23457 -->301 redirects ---> example.com/busines-service-foo affilate.example.com/23457 -->301 redirects ---> example.com/busines-service-bar note: The business services provided are very different. As a result, these links will be placed on very different types of website. To keep contextually relevant links in the 301 redirect should the affiliate look like this?: affilate.example.com/busines-service-foo/23457 -->301 redirects ---> example.com/busines-service-foo affilate.example.com/busines-service-bar/23457 -->301 redirects ---> example.com/busines-service-bar Thanks in advance for your feedback! If anyone can point me in the direction of an ideal way to set up affiliate programs that would be great. Especially regarding: canonical tag, # in url, 301 Any arguments about keeping the the affiliate off a subdomain are also very welcome. Thanks!

My new site experienced a sudden drop in Google rankings
We launched a new affiliate site at the beginning of April this year dealing in reviews, vouchers and price comparison for a niche product. We had a pretty good start, with some of our target keywords ranking #8 #10 #7 but this week they have suddenly dropped off dramatically - like 36 or 42 places. We haven't made any changes to the site apart from publishing new content pieces, such as news posts and reviews - does anyone know why this would suddenly happen? Thanks

Single domain or Multiple Keyword Domains
I do a lot of affiliate marketing for aftermarket truck parts and I also run a lot of community/forum type websites for trucks. On the affiliate marketing side of things, I usually will find a very good keyword rich domain name for a product, and build a site around that product. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't, but I typically feel like I have an advantage because of the very keyword rich domain names. Lately it's become a lot of work setting up these individual sites and promoting them. I try to do a good job, and provide quality content. I've considered moving these sites to one central site, like, one of my more popular truck community/forums and maybe start using sub-domains or sub-folders instead. They are all truck related, but they are all completely different parts. Some for performance, others being accessories. Does anyone have an opinion on this? I've read on here multiple times about the advantage in focusing all your link power in one place, but I feel at the same time that I would be missing out on the power of the great keyword phrase domains I've been using. If I combined all of these sites into a single community site, the site's content wouldn't be as targeted, right? I would appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks, Andy
